Last ADE, we invited Ben for our little hangout at Red Light Records. Apart from his adorable positive energy, we enjoyed seeing him play his fresh sophisticated sound, while not taking things too seriously. More of that please.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?

This mix is a collage of music from my community. It's quite a reflective mix for me, and I chose tracks that I felt held me in a suspended state of thought or existentialism. I think this is a consequence of my difficulties in dealing with changes in my life that I felt not quite ready for. The mix is a way for me to stay a little longer in the place was before.


q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

It's good to listen to it alone in headphones, maybe while you walk around your neighbourhood. I would say it will be a bit annoying as background music, and it suits more deep listening. It would be cool to listen to loud in your living room with a couple of close friends too, but it should be people you don’t mind a limited amount of conversation with as there are parts I hope you would zone out together in your thoughts.


q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

I would say my bedroom is more my living room these days as it's the brightest room in my house and it has all my favourite objects in it. It's really hard to say a favourite as my room is made up of little shrine-like clusters of art objects, all of which I love.

Just because it's right here on my desk next to me: This roughly A5-sized wooden board with Green, Orange, Brown, Blue, Black, and Yellow play-dough pressed onto it in a kind of abstract landscape painting by Isaac Rayneau. I really love how you can still see the fingerprints of the artist in the play-dough if you look closely. Over time the play-dough has started to dry out and crack so you can see through to the board behind. The ridges made from the pressing of the fingertips have gathered dust which is impossible to get rid of completely, because of the subtle details like the fingernail crescents and other tiny details that I have become obsessed with preserving, precisely as it was given to me. The artwork has been travelling with me for about 8 years


q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

I am working on some more visual art currently. I was going through pictures from my phone camera taken this year and began turning them into large poster formats. I'm quite a sentimental person as the above might have indicated already so I often do this as a kind of time stamping for myself. It ends up being quite cathartic to produce artwork like this and helps me feel okay to move on in the same way this mix has done for me.

We are back after a long time. Welcome to the newest season of our series. Hope we can keep experimenting together, wherever you are listening to. A big welcome to the new members of the community. 

To kick off, we present CS + Kreme (@cs-kreme) – Conrad Standish and Sam Karmel – a particular Australian duo who caught our attention during the long days of quarantine with their excellent Snoopy LP, imprinted on Trilogy Tapes (@the-trilogy-tapes). Orange, their latest work, profounds into this addictive hallucinatory feeling, delivering once again a special music experience. 

Regarding the mix find a quiet moment, you'll have to chew it a while to uncover slowly the encrypted narrative that's beyond. A selection made with love, featuring some of recent duo favorites in no particular style.

The graphics are a delicate and beautiful work by the graphic designer Isidora Amenábar.

Introduce yourself? Pronouns? Where do you currently reside? 

Hello, I’m Jake Muir (he/him). I make music and DJ. I’m from LA, spent several years in Seattle, and currently living in Berlin. 

What sound would you listen to… if it was the only thing you could listen to 24/7?

Ice melting 

Describe in detail your favorite place in the club?

I tend to situate myself in the middle so I get the proper stereo spread. If I forget my earplugs, in the back. If a friend is playing, I try to be closer to the front.

Best gig of your life so far?

Honcho Campout. It was really special all around.

What is the theme song of your mind on 100mg edible?

Wichita Forever



If you could transfer all your knowledge from what you do now into something completely different, what would it be and why?

If I wasn’t working in sound, I’d probably be into mixology. There’s a lot of parallels between making cocktails and music. Some people referred to Philip Jeck as an alchemist. 

Longest you've stayed up and why?

It might be when I played through Metal Gear Solid 3 in one go, 24 hrs, over a thanksgiving break back in high school.

This guest mix from Vietnamese band Rắn Cạp Đuôi_, on my friend Ziur’s Refuge Worldwide program, might be my favorite mix of the year. It’s super wild and kinda plays with the idea of what a mix can be.


Any advice to upcoming DJs/producers? 

Develop your own voice, even if it’s super niche, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Think about your own background and identity and what you can bring to the table with that. 

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

More chillout rooms, genre/style hopping, and care for one another.
