Las Manos opens in a crowded Los Angeles venue as vocalist Chuck Moore’s admiration for a fellow musician is sparked. The details of their crush, and the brief introduction it inspires, float atop the shimmer of Moore’s guitar until they regret having left without a number. At this lament, the beautiful ferocity of Cartalk erupts like a display of illegal fireworks—a wall of distortion that succinctly harbors both the celebration and anxiety of the encounter. The ensuing relationship unfolds through fragments, as Moore sings of their awe and openness. The band accentuates this poetic recollection by oscillating with precision between tranquility and a growing sense of apprehension, the latter of which subtly builds into Moore’s own anxieties as a wave of self-doubt triggers the repetition Did my honesty scare you? Honestly, I scare me too. Despite this new-love panic, a scrap of poise then boldly emerges on the self-soothing twang of Moore’s guitar, the reassurance I'm not gonna back pedal / cause, baby, I'm all caught up. This might not end as we hoped, but the fault is not in who we are, and nothing is taken back.
