We can't think of a better way to mark the start of the summer than with a brand new instalment of The Sunrise Mixtapes!

As always, we've tried to balance older records with some more contemporary finds. The mix opens with 'Kaunis Maa', a lovely slice of new-age (with hints of smooth jazz) courtesy of Riccardo Giagni. We first heard this record on Nick Cubs' SEEKMAGIC podcast many moons ago, and it took a us a heck of a long time to finally ID the record.. Originally released in 1988, it was reissued by Archeo Recordings for a very limited vinyl only release in 2019, only 200 copies were pressed. Australian artist Max Santilli has featured on a number of our guest-mixes, most recently on Coyote's guest-mix. 'Sundown' was taken from Santilli's 2019 debut LP Surface, released on the ever dependable Into The Light Records. Next up is Tessa Stivar's 'Thin Air', B-side of a 7" released in 1983 by Smash Records. Regrettably we don't know much about the artist, or the record for that matter, but we just love the feel of the track, and Mmmmm that fretless bass..! As for more contemporary material, there's Eddie Chacon's soulful ballad 'Hurt' off his Pleasure, Joy And Happiness LP from 2020. Neo-folk artist Mia Doi Todd's Cosmic Ocean Ship LP is another fairly recent discovery; Quite embarrassing as it was actually released in 2011. The acoustic song 'Paraty' is a tribute to the natural beauty of Paraty Island, paradise exists! Other tried and tested favourites on here include the 7" version of Godley & Creme's 'Cry', Penguin Café Orchestra's 'Steady State' and Soft Machine's 'Gentle Turn'. Enjoy!

2015 saw Flash Atkins release his debut album 'The Life and Times' and it’s mix of club smashers and disco nodders found people like FK, Andrew Weatherall, Horse Meat Disco, Ivan Smagghe, Rune Lindbaek and Bill Brewster getting hot under the collar.

Now comes the remix album with a collection of tracks some of which have only been out on vinyl and some not at all. It’s a roll call of who’s doing it right at the moment from the well known to the up and coming but all nail it. Names include The Revenge, The Emperor Machine, Sleazy McQueen, Pete Herbert, Tal M. Klein and Steve Cobby. Plus there's a healthy representation from Norway in the form of Ralph Myerz, B.G.Baarregaard and Mental Overdrive. From the paper stable Leon Sweet, Doc L. Jnr step up and the elusive Jamie L turns out a 12 minute Detroit (by way of Halifax) monster.

So you’ve played the game, drunk the beer, danced to the tunes, read the fanzine, rolled your eyes at the middle aged man in tights and now you’ve got the remix album. Job done.

Flash Atkins is a super hero who had his gravy days in the 80s saving the world with his ability to manipulate sound.  Unfortunately he's fallen on hard times and can be spotted in the less salubrious parts of London, Manchester and West Yorkshire often stoned or drunk on borrowed money and time.

To make ends meet he uses his special powers to remix and make deep disco music for Paper Recordings.

Let’s hope it gets him back on track.
