For Respekt 172, we take a little dig into Spektre’s Respekt back catalogue, with a quintet of reworks from the scene’s finest.
OC & Verde kick things off with their super vibey interpretation of “Carnival of Souls” - a timely chaser to their huge Respekt hit “Mondoshawan”.

Next up to the plate is Harvey McKay, making his debut on the label with a characteristically stripped-back, no nonsense take on “Gates of Dawn”.

Manchester’s Rudosa transplants the melodies from “Forged in the Heart of a Laserbeam” onto his trademark heavy drums and rumbling low-end, whilst Hush & Sleep and Raito put their inimitable stamps on “Strobelight” and “Celeste” respectively.

biggest yet.

The 25-track strong compilation features standout cuts Beyer has received over the last 12 months, but been unable to
find room for in Drumcode’s regular release schedule, such is the volume and high standard of music that’s submitted.
The highlight-rich compilation includes Jamie Jones & Darius Syrossian’s buzzy Drumcode debut ‘Eyes of the Night’,
Nicole Moudaber’s first DC release in 5 years with the mesmerizing ‘This Is Us’, Will Clarke’s bass-drenched re-work
of Adam Beyer & Bart Skils ‘Your Mind’ and Joey Beltram’s first Drumcode release in 11 years with the retro-tinged
‘Can You Feel It’.

The beloved Alan Fitzpatrick returns to the fold with the searing ‘Heiße Rakete’, alongside label mainstays Layton
Giordani, who drops the stirring chord-driven ‘Chrome’ and Wehbba with ‘Mantra’, combining techno classicism with
future-focused groove.

There’s a troupe of debutants donning the Drumcode jersey for the first time, including BEC, Shelley Johannson,
Anthony Castaldo, Avision, Zimmz, Woo York, SAMA (in a terrific collaboration with Secret Cinema) and Ilija
Djokovic, who delivers a shimmering highlight with ‘Aura’, a particular favourite of Beyer’s over the last year. Raxon
also debuts on the label after a couple of quality additions to the Truesoul back catalogue.

Exciting young guns Weska and Juliet Fox bring heat to the compilation, while Veerus and Timmo follow up strong
DC releases with a repeat dose. Elsewhere faithful contributors Ramon Tapia, Jay Lumen, Luca Agnelli, Marco
Bailey and Mark Reeve craft powerful dancefloor weapons.

Rudosa has been making impressions in the techno scene for over a decade by releasing an intelligent, yet driving strain of music on the likes of Intec, Second State and We Are The Brave. With the lead track of this first release being supported heavily by the likes of Amelie Lens, Richie Hawtin and Pan-Pot to name a few, starting his own label came as the natural next step for this well-honed sound smith.

‘Obsolescence’, a superb seven-minute cut with cosmic lead synths and hammering drums that drive you late into the night, with its intensity it’s designed for main rooms. Then ‘Isolation’ which is an all-out assault with more driving drum programming and edgy synths that keep you in suspense with a slick trance element, clever effects, fills and breakdowns that make this a real rollercoaster.

"Heart Attack" is a peak time techno track by Saad Ayub mimicking the sound of an actual heartbeat with heavy bass drums, edgy chords, and hip acid lines. 

"'Heart Attack' is my take on acid and big-room techno. It mimics the sound of a heartbeat throughout the track, reminding the audience that the thumping four by four kick drums align with your heartbeat on the dancefloor. January is the month for dreaming, or so the saying goes and there’s more than enough on 2020’s Dots and Pearls 6 to satisfy the wildest flights of fantasy, as Cocoon Recordings invites well known international artists to once again rub shoulders with some of the freshest new talents around.  

First up, Eduardo de la Calle & Romina Cohn’s “I’m Losing My Mind“ does a decent job helping us lose ours. Taking the classic DBX template as a start point, Cohn‘s random, spaced out musings elevate things to another level as they filter through all manner of machinery, bathing the hypnotic percussion in a lysergic glow. Fabe’s “Call of Origin“ pulls no punches either, the energetic, bass driven intro bouncing its way centre stage before expanding into lush open spaces with occasional melodic scatters and washes of warm pads that radiate good vibes.

Over the last couple of years, Adana Twins have rightly consolidated there position at the top table, so it’s a pleasure to have them on board with “Origo“. Like snake charmers relentlessly teasing and twisting the infectious hook line in all manner of directions, they demonstrate complete control of their art, pushing all the right buttons to bring things nicely to the boil. As with all Cocoon compilations the deeper you dive, the stranger the vibe and Juan Sanchez delivers a dose of trance-inducing, minimal techno. Abiding by the same dogma as the track before, “Narcissus“ offsets a constantly morphing hypnotic hook line with raw, stripped 909 beats in a classic mid 90‘s style.

Michael Klein’s “Continuation“ maintains the intensity as Cocoon’s Techno Tardis transports the listener even further back to a sweaty early nineties warehouse. It could be London, it could be Berlin... wherever it is, it sure sounds like home. Rico Puestel then snuffs out the candle, plunging us back into darkness. With “Perpetua Mobilia“ he unleashes a deep, prowling beast of a track that reminds us that just when you think you‘ve got a handle on Cocoon, it sheds its skin again, revealing yet another mask behind the mask.

As we motor on towards morning, Radu Dracul adds some bite to proceedings with “Spectrae“, a slow burning psychedelic trip with gently percolating acid lines that smooth out the rough textures of the preceding tracks before giving way to a cavernous breakbeat inflected breakdown. And then finally, Joe Metzenmacher and Borka & The Gang close out the collection, paying homage to the melodic side of Detroit with the quirky, idiosyncratic yet ultimately beautiful “Magic Talk“. It surrounds the dance floor in a warm embrace as keys, strings and bass combine effortlessly to produce a priceless moment of collective euphoria that sees us safely home.

Following the internationally celebrated release of their debut album The Signs Within in 2017, burgeoning Japanese techno duo Drunken Kong look to kick off a brand new decade in emphatic fashion, as they announce the forthcoming release of their eagerly-anticipated sophomore long-player, Where We Start.

Due for worldwide release on February 10 via Christian Smith’s esteemed Tronic Music imprint, Where We Start marks the second full-length opus from the Tokyo-based outfit, whose impressive catalogue of unique techno productions have also been homed by the likes of Terminal M, Octopus Recordings, Stil Vor Talent and Session Womb to name a few.

Featuring a total of sixteen diverse cuts, including thirteen brand new Drunken Kong originals, two recent collaborations with Mainz-based outfit Teenage Mutants and one exclusive new collab with Tronic head honcho Christian Smith, Where We Start is Drunken Kong’s most extensive body of work to date, and goes a long way in showcasing the inexhaustible creativity of one of the most prolific double acts in techno right now. Speaking about the forthcoming album release and the inspiration behind the project, Drunken Kong commented:

“Our new album, "Where We Start" was built around an idea and inspiration that came from our new stage in life, which was parenting.  Having a child, was something new to us and we wanted to create an album which directly reflected and captured various feelings and emotions we had at different moments”.
