Belgian imprint Arkham Audio continues to build momentum twelve months after its launch, drawing on some of the scene’s biggest names and defying the odds to become a heavy hitter in the industrial techno sphere. On Arkham Audio 07, label owner Cri Du Coeur delivers a rolling, broken number with Jeffrey. As sparse as it is effective, the track is driven by saturated kickdrums and white noise percussion, with a vocal sample which placed exquisitely between the kicks, creating a rhythm greater than the sum of their parts. Jeffrey (Techno 909 Edit) straightens out the original with a dose of the 909s for a cleaner but still highly functional dancefloor workout.
A trio of remixes come from heavyweights Drumcell, Insolate and Luis Flores. L.A based Drumcell takes an atmospheric route, the reverbs bigger and brighter than the original, with the vocal twisted and pitched down beyond recognition. Croatian Insolate makes things altogether more playful, introducing a bubbling bass line and shuffling hats to the mix, and adding a 16th note arpeggio to place a completely dif- ferent slant on things with her remix. Berghain regular Luis Flores adds an extended breakdown and some impressive sound design to create a palpable level of tension before reintroducing the pounding kick drums to his twisted rework.

Having made numerous appearances on Rekids including ‘No Filter’, his debut album released in 2020, Marco Faraone has become a core artist on Matt Edwards’s label when not releasing on his very own imprint. Reflecting on an amazingly creative 2020, at the start of this year Marco set a new creative path for his future, writing new music that received regular support from many of the most important artists in the scene.

Gaston Zani is a Spanish artist whose latest release is an underground remix that caught our attention with its flashing analogue synth line and hypnotic groove.

For this DT:Premiere we have his rework of “Fono” a solo track originally by Matt Sassari forthcoming on Gaston’s own label we(R)aw.

This really is a masterclass rework of underground techno, building a steady momentum with its dark atmosphere, it ramps up the tension with the help of claps, snare rolls and speaker shaking sub-bass frequencies. Unrelenting, it’s simplicity at its very best, as with the help of subtle modulation and a perfectly engineered structure it unleashes a steady torrent of percussive energy.
