Earth Trax releases his debut album for Shall Not Fade with the breath-taking LP1.

LP1 takes influence from cold wave, applying gloomy chords onto House and Breakbeat, whilst including textures that might draw reference to early IDM. Earth Trax blends dreamy vocals, pads and melodies with striking rhythms, squawking synthesizers and strong bass lines throughout. The LP was recorded as an extension of some of the artists moodier singles on Shall Not Fade sister imprint, Lost Palms. It explores a more experimental approach towards House music, whilst drawing influence from some of his more downtempo style releases as Bartosz Kruczyński. LP1 features the stunning photography of Kasia Zacharko & graphic design of Kaja Kukuła.

Originally released via Terraform Records in 1995, 'Systems E.P. 1' was certainly too ahead of its time to meet with success back in the day. That said, as years went by, so swelled the reputation of this sextet of visionary, alien-engineered jams, soon turning the once $1 bin find into a highly sought-after item on the second-hand market. Much to the displeasure of hardline speculators but for the greatest joy of skint '90s sound lovers, KOC reissues the Systems experience in full force and effect.

Harbouring a trio of submersible ambient-tech and 303-driven breaky weapons, Red Shift's own dedicated A-side has lost nothing of its soul-fulfilling appeal. Getting the ball rolling, '3rd Moon' skippers us to brightly hued sound niches, where trancey acid motifs merge with slo-moving ambient pads and uptempo breakbeat on a frenzy. Laced with a hint of bleepy abstraction, the more lascivious, piano-laden 'Audity' then shifts the scope to further introspective depths before 'Himalayas' takes us on a mind-expanding ride across imaginary snow-capped summits and lushly forested slopes.

Flip it over and here comes Ether and their mightily explosive 'Detonator' - a wild and woolly acid number that shall not go without conjuring up memories of the early Prodigy's mid-nineties rave exploits. Not to be confused with that of his contemporary Australian counterpart, Escape Artist's 'Rain Eternal' evokes the soulful RnB suavity of Sade's classics, adorned with otherworldly organic warbles and addictive piano stabs. Constants of Nature vibey closer 'Slow Symmetry Breaking' rounds off the journey on a further distinctively atmospheric note, perfect to muster up the energy and drive to take it on the lam from our crazy world.

Following the release of ‘Blue Coat, Red Dress’ earlier this year, kilig steps up for their first EP for UK party and label Origins. Marking the second output for the imprint, ‘Is It Time’ will be available on the 3rd July. 

Holding a residency at London venue Night Tales, kilig draws from the city’s dynamic rave sound, moving away from the previous ambient tones found on their last EP. Leading with the title track, the single is tinged with euphoria as a warm vocal sample echos over shimmering synths. ‘VHS Flex’ and ‘Buckled’ take a darker turn as the sun sets into evening, filled with grittiness and attitude. The EP comes to a close with ‘Bed Test’, a night-to-light record with an endorphin-rich melody. 

Explaining the story and connection with Origins, kilig says, “When kilig started I made a little list of targets and places that I wanted to play, and people that I wanted to send music too. In terms of London, Origins sat pretty high on that list, booking names I genuinely looked up to. I finally got some music in front of the team there and a conversation opened up, but not about playing, instead they wanted to release a record. In the year since that conversation I’ve written a fair few club tracks. The writing process was very different to other stuff I make, maybe evident in the broad range of styles on this EP; my favourite elements of techno, breaks, house and electro, without sitting still for too long.

It feels somewhat ironic that during this time, where clubs can't even open, I would be releasing my first full club-centric EP - posing: Is It Time? 

I couldn’t be more excited to be working with the Origins team, especially in this strange time. I hope you find a suitable Time? to enjoy the release, and hopefully we can enjoy it together soon.” 

Origins launched their label in 2017 with an EP from Tomossini which featured a remix from Hodge and saw support from Anastasia Kristensen during her Boiler Room debut.

Austrian producer DOS rolls through making his mark on the first release of new label, Running Out of Steam, already scoring a modern summer classic house infused release to make memories too. 

EP track title 'Lucid Dreams' entwines twinkling, twitching vocals with deep compressed pads for the summer hazy days ahead with tropical synth melodies blending into a euphoric after-hours haze. 

'Work That' launches into a nostalgic blend of crunchy breaks and endearing silky chords. Levitating through the track, it's building vocal line draws to an ecstatic drop for the living room dancefloor. Get the windows open and feel the wind in your hair for this sunrise belter. 

On the flip side DOS injects his punchy pads and dusty 90's vocals for a cheeky four to the floor house anthem. Broken beat drum hooks move in unison with mellow synth lines to time travel back to better times. 

‘Manta’ sees out the labels first outing with an epic bang, pulsating bass battles elegantly crunching with trance-esque sound pallets and classic jungle breaks.

Type “Was Joan of Arc” into Google and the suggested endings for this statement give you an accurate gauge of her place in pop culture: “Catholic” / “a nun” / “canonised” / “a prophet” / “French” / “a witch” and so on. Related questions to “What were Joan of Arc’s last words” on the info-sharing site Quora include “Was Joan of Arc bisexual” and “Was Joan of Arc simply crazy?” Everyone seems to agree this person was burned at the stake in 1431, but beyond that, Joan’s narrative is an enigma. It is this lack of definition that the production duo Pillow Queen harnessed for their second release, Burn Me Up. Inverting the image of the devout Christian girl, the Joan who stands as this record’s heroine was a heretic, a transvestite, most definitely a dyke and a hot femme-top at that. 
 
Opening up the A-side, the title track is a call— a battle cry, but also a summoning. In a time of need one calls upon their patrons and elders from history; a DJ beckons and gathers dancers to the floor; prayer and sweat go hand and hand. A traditional Irish bodhrán drum beats out the first rhythms, joined by a steamy vocal sample that gets caught, chopped, and soon “Burns Me Up” is pumping along with organ chords and distorted keys. Pivoting away from the 4/4 format, “Submission” is a textured, downtempo slowburner, with close-mic’d vocals from Vani-T and the D. Tiffany’s deft drum programming. When the choral pads come in, there’s en echo of the 1990s German worldbeat project Enigma, with its Gregorian chants and flutes laid on top of lounge beats—here, though, the chorus is stripped of kitsch, only driving the track deeper into a mood. 
 
If Burn Me Up’s sequence of tracks is read as a kind of narrative, they seem to tell the story of Joan’s last moments. “Burn Me Up” is, frankly, heat—aggressive, the high-end crackles and the bass puts a pyre under one’s feet. “Submission” is like an exhale, a giving-in to death’s grip; there is, along with the sensuous tread, a melancholy. It only makes sense that one flips the record to “Resurrection”, which rolls in a tremolo’d wail of pitched vocals for 30 seconds before a kick drum begins the 141-BPM march. The percussion is central here, as the track shifts between polyrhythms like a range of resuscitations, varied heartbeats. “Salvation” closes the record, again dialing back the tempo to the deep nod of dub. To no surprise, the scene of redemption here is not one of sunlit cherubs—the church bell sample tolls one strike every few measures of bass-throb and shadow, while Vani-T intones, “Then he lay down and died”. Death can be salvation to some; living as many selves, living in contradiction, is a saving grace to many more.
