“You leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case…”

In 1984, synth-pop trio Bronski Beat dropped the iconic ‘Smalltown Boy’. A tender tune charting a young gay man leaving home after being queerbashed, it shot to the top of the charts internationally and became an enduring anthem highlighting homophobia as the LGBTQ+ scene developed in the ensuing decades.

Flipping the script over 40 years later, Pattern Perception has recorded ‘Smalltown Girl’ with self-styled London pop icon Starling. It’s a bold move, but it works. Built around a deep burrowing bassline, nifty synth-work and Starling’s soaring, emotive vocal, it’s one of the standout cuts from Pattern Perception’s ‘Spectrum Disorder’ album on Out Yer Box Records.

“I was always a huge fan of the original,” says Dave Patterns. “When I heard the original 12” version it had an extended intro, which I thought would work really well with the building synths and Reese bass that I’m known for. Starling’s input came later after I realised that I wouldn’t be able to release my version with the original vocal. When she sent back her version, I could still feel the message resonating through the track but from the perspective of a female.” This new version still has the power to touch your soul.

Stepping up first on remix duties is none other than garage hero Zed Bias, in cahoots with his pal Metrodome. Taking it in more of a dubstep direction at first, he then unleashes a big booming bassline, a slamming, kick-ass breakbeat and some garagey beats to lift it into the heavens. 

Next up, Birmingham bassline badboys Bass Dominators come with the speed garage vibes on their bouncy rework. Warbling bass, skippy beats and judicious use of breaks in the breakdown turn ‘Smalltown Girl’ into one for the garage floors. Think: Girls Don’t Sync, Sammy Virji, and anyone else part of the nu garage revival. 

Finally, Sam Townsend — boss of the Untidy Tax label, sister label to Tidy Trax — turns it techno at first, before hard house synths pop it into an alternative dancefloor realm. Banger. Think: Hannah Laing, Kettama and the nu hard dance massive.

Digital Haven reúne temas que se han producido en momentos muy diferentes, entre el 2015 y el 2024. Están en orden inverso: Cloud Strife es el más nuevo y Kupo el más antiguo. Los produje simplemente por el placer de producir, sin pensar en nada. Pero, precisamente, este placer y esta nada son la raíz del concepto de Digital Haven. Es la idea de un refugio, un “locus amoenus” formado de paz digital.

Esta idea puede, de hecho, extenderse a toda mi música, cuya escucha suele resultar reconfortante e introspectiva. El uso de sintetizadores analógicos y emulaciones fieles aporta calidez al sonido, mientras que los bajos ácidos, la percusión y los “breaks” nos recuerdan a sonidos clásicos de los noventa, con un enfoque actual. Digital Haven se mueve entre el acid techno y el house principalmente.

A party with a reputation for impeccable curation, since its launch in London in 2012, Kodah has frequently brought the most cutting-edge lineups to some of the best club venues in London, most notably FOLD where a strong family bond has been formed, and one could argue where he has built his true, spiritual home in London, both as an external promoter, but also now as a resident DJ.

Dark Science Electro presents: Placid guest mix

Randomly clicking on the soundcloud tape, I came across something very unusual: namely, the music that touched me. Yes, it doesn't happen very often when you've listened to enough music to stop listening to tracks from start to finish. Adrian's approach to electronic music is reminiscent of unconscious thoughts. Sounds emerge as if the memories of a living being, as if it is not the track itself, but memories of it. At the same time, it does not lack harmony and melody, on the contrary, it is a very elegant work. Check out the track Anvil on the album @transatlantyk-records, or Ardea Cinerea on the collection from @pointless-geometry - what was that ?! While @aheloy is preparing to release his debut solo EP on @club-in-theory, I managed to invite him to a guest mix, recorded entirely from the works of the author. Так, це буває дуже не часто, коли ти переслухав музики досить багато, щоб взагалі перестати слухати треки від початку до кінця. Підхід до електронної музики у Адріана нагадує несвідомі думки. Звуки виринають, наче спогади живої істоти, наче це не сам трек, а спогади про нього Це музика, що наче й не має структури лиш відчуття від музики. Одночасно з цим в ній не відсутня гармонія і мелодика, навпаки, це дуже витончені роботи. Зацініть трек Анвіл на платівці Transatlantyk, або Ardea Cinerea на збірці від Pointless Geometry - що це взагалі було?! NONEMIX#17: AHELOY!

The second release in the exit planet earth compilation vinyl series features four exclusive tracks designed for space travel, including the first ever collaboration between Keith Tucker of Aux 88 and Carl Finlow. The resulting track ‘Coder’ is an electro masterpiece. The more established electro pairing of Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code hit heavy with ‘Red Cell’ while Voigtmann brings the bass to space with ‘Subtopia’. The record is rounded off beautifully by Cignol with Detroit infused string sections and harmonies on his ‘51D’ track.
