A collection of covers of master Brazilian musician and writer Jorge Ben. With such classics under his belt as Mas Que Nada, covered by the likes of Sergio Mendes, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Al Jarreau, and the song Taj Mahal which was the source of Rod Stewart’s Do You Think I’m Sexy?, Ben is a huge force in Brazilian popular music.

Often described as the James Brown of Brazilian music due to his prolific output, he is the most sampled Brazilian artist ever with people from the Black Eyed Peas to DJ Marky lifting elements off his tracks. His song catalogue has also been covered by some of the finest bands in Brazil.

This selection represents a more dance-floor orientated outing including mega rarities for the collecting fiends like Cosa Nostra by Os Mutreteiros Grilados and tracks that even Ben himself never got around to singing like Rei Do Maracatu's Cyro Aguiar.

The Ting Tings ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’ (blunt edit re-touched by greg wilson)

Adrian Blunt, then resident at Plan B in Brixton, emailed me in July 2008 attaching a ‘little dub edit’ he’d done of ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’ by Manchester’s Ting Tings. It was something he said he’d ‘knocked together’ in a few hours round at a mate’s house. He wanted a more dancefloor friendly version to feature at the festivals he’d been booked to play that summer, and thought it was something I might be able to use myself

It was indeed an edit I thought would work for me, and I featured it at Camp Bestival just a few days later. Adrian was there, having played earlier.

Although I really liked what he’d done, I felt it could benefit from a bit more work, and I suggested a few things to him. However, he couldn’t see himself going back to it unless it was officially commissioned – it served the purpose he needed it for as it was, and he had no desire to take it any further, which was fair enough.

There were three things I felt could improve it. The first was a simple extension of the intro for mixing purposes. The next was trickier, because it would mean re-arranging the track somewhat – I felt all the action was in the first two thirds, and that it meandered a bit for the last few minutes. My initial thought was that it might need more of a build-up before the vocals came in, so the final part of the song was positioned nearer the end of the track, rather than there being a couple of instrumental minutes before it finished. Having said that, I liked where the vocal came in, so I figured it might be a case of the track working best at a shorter length – concise and to the point. It’d be a matter of trying out a few options, but I didn’t have time to have a look at it myself because I was already overloaded with stuff to do, including a podcast mix I’d promised for the electronic music webzine Resident Advisor, which would appear in early September: http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=119

 It was this RA mix that became the catalyst for my re-touch of ‘Shut Up’. Having decided to buck the trend by going for a more downtempo groove selection, it occurred to me that Adrian’s Blunt Edit would provide a fitting climax, but for it to properly work I’d have to decide what I was doing with the latter third of the track. 

Before I started cutting it up I thought I’d try a couple of acappellas on top, on the off-chance that some suitable alchemy may occur, and I hit the jackpot with Chic’s good old ‘Good Times’, which enabled me to end the mix on a high.

Having completed the RA mix it became apparent that this ‘Good Times’ finale solved the problem I had with the edit’s arrangement, as the track no longer lost momentum towards the end, so I extended the intro and had exactly what I needed. Well almost…

I never mentioned the third thing – a small, but to my ears, hugely important detail. The start of the s in ‘shut’ had been ever so slightly clipped (Adrian had cut tight to the beat, but the singer had started the word fractionally earlier), so it sounded more ‘hut up and let me go’. This had irritated me from the off (especially where the loop keeps repeating itself around two minutes in), and I’d hoped Adrian could have painlessly solved this by nudging the edit points slightly, but it wasn’t to be, so I had to find a way to fix it myself, excavating a suitable s from the song and transplanting it into the necessary places. Happily this sibilance restoring micro-surgery was successful, and you’d never had known had I not told you (I found my infinitesimal s at 2:15). Sometimes it’s all about the finer detail.

This is largely Adrian’s work, I’m very much playing a supporting role here, so props to him for a fine edit that’s served me well. I wouldn’t have shared this without his agreement, but he’s more than happy to spread the love. Glad I could bring some ‘Good Times’ to the party.

In Moscoman’s own words “this one is super special, it’s a killer!"

Mosco's distinctive sound, which takes in elements of techno, new wave, house and the sounds of his native Middle East, has seen him quickly soar to prominence via his own production, his remix work, his DJing style and has now further been cemented by the success of his up and coming record label Disco Halal.
 
Red Axes is a project created by Tel Aviv based producers and DJs Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi who have been performing together for a long time but first released as Red Axes in 2009. Their music can be found on labels such as Correspondant, Hivern Discs and Throne Of Blood. More recently they have appeared on Crosstown Rebels as part of ’Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons Remixes From The Other Side’ following an EP on the label last year.

This week’s premiere is the latest in the line of sublime disco and funk edits curated, and crafted by Nicholas Church and Joseph Spencer of Casino Times. Hailing from London, this duo has released EPs and albums on labels like WOLF and recently, Omena. Third in their stand alone series of “Casino Edits,” they’ve laid down their own production on the A-side, taking a cover of an early blues classic and cutting it up into a groovy Italo-inspired DJ tool, interspersed with Spanish flamenco guitar and claps.

Malcolm ( @john-malcolm-moore) is the choice for their B-side cut. Based in Berlin via UK, John Malcolm Moore made his name as a member of the Tief Music crew, formerly one half of the duo Sisterhood and now putting out solo material with Banoffee Pies. His inspiration for editing this time around was sparked by the discovery of cheeky dial tones and voices within the intro of a late 70’s NY disco jam. Here he’s flipped it to sound much more steady and hard-hitting on the dance floor, with various percussions abound. Bongos, toms and chunky Linn drum-esque claps permeate the beat while girl groups swoon over top with harmonies. A male voice from afar whispers in “be with me tonight,” and suddenly the bass drops in sweeping in all the vibes and energy of the room (or more appropriately, loft).

This collection overall comes nicely paired for any party desiring that vintage touch and cosmic flair. Casino Times has released the beast from the box, letting all record collectors know where to find good, sturdy jammers ready to shake the foundation of any neighborhood disco.
