THUMP's Labels in Residence: Kitsuné - The Swiss

The sun is setting an hour earlier and chilly evenings spent in front of the fire are replacing afternoon barbecues and poolside adventures. The windows can stay down in the car but the heat stays blasting to fight the first gripping tendrils of winter. The fall is beautiful though, and it has always been a time for introspection and looking to the past and future. I've been thinking a lot about everything that's happening and I sort of think that this mix of songs reflects that. Melancholy and nostalgia aren't unfamiliar partners to ride with, but they sure feel good to cuddle up with when its cold outside and you're lying in bed with your headphones on thinking about somewhere a little warmer.  

I really want to thank all of the artists that made the music included in the mix. I fall in love with this shit every single day and hopefully this can lead some people your way.  See below for the full tracklist including time signatures, and then go check out their music!

TEST PRESSING MIX #309

At the end of 2012 a nice project came up for an 80s disco / italo club style mix. The mix was originally going to be released in early 2013 on Roller Disco Records, however as Roller Disco were keen to market this in Asia, they collaborated with a chinese music distributior, and eventually the mix was released on an obscure chinese label called Lucky Harvest as a joint promotional package, coinciding with the Chinese New Year celebrations. There remains a huge italo and euro disco fan base in Asia, and I was asked to create a mix in their preferred upbeat and uplifting style, with some key 80s synth records popular across Asia, mixed with pure italo gems - I had a huge list of records in mind! This is an early unreleased demo version with slightly different tracks in places than the mix eventually released. I hope you enjoy!

Starborough has been playing the Westcoast Sound of Holland scene around Cybernetic Broadcasting System and IntergalacticFM for almost 20 years. With his broad selection of classic house, electro and disco tracks he rocked dancefloors in his hometown Dordrecht, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.  Starboroughs carefully constructed deejay sets focus on songs over tracks. He combines the swing of soul and funk with the mechanical push of house and electro, with some Italian melancholy thrown in for extra flavour.

FLEMMING DALUM - Italo Mix For Radio Stad Den Haag

Bordello A Parigi had the chance to dig up some unreleased Flemming Dalum gold from the now defunct Roller Disco Records archives. We present Serie d'Oro!

Roller Disco Records began in 2010 in the UK with a focus on releasing DJ mixes containing obscure and overlooked sub-genres of italo and European 80s. In Serie d'Oro, the mix archives are flung wide open with unreleased DJ mixes from Flemming Dalum. 

The second mix "Full Throttle" is unashamedly upbeat and highlights some of the faster paced BPM italo and synth records.

I wanted to propose to Flemming (@flemming) to do a 716 Mix, but something different. We first talked about it in march 2013. 
Flemming quickly came back with the the idea of a darker mix. He worked A LOT, there are tons of edits especially made for this session, that’s why it’s only online in January 2014.

Why did he decide to play this Belgian sound?
“After italo faded away for me in 1986, became to Commercial and lost the magic, I moved to new beat and I have ALL new beat records ever released. After new beat died the belgian’s raised tempo and it became hard beat, Skizzo and eventually early European techno which I also loooove…. and I really got 99% of all early European techno records !!!!!!

Why did he choose the name “The Sound Of Belgium”?
“Just came to me because a lot of my friends from Belgium are telling me about a huge second wave of this musical genre right now!!!!!!…. and some friends have just released a compilation called “The Sound Of Belgium“…. so i thought it would be smart to pick the same title/name hehe
I believe it’s a strong concept mix…. strong theme….. all belgian early techno style from when the new beat rised up in tempo and became European techno.”

Flemming Dalum, also know as King of the cut, discovered his musical journey at an early age. An interest based out of curiosity for electronic synthesizer legends emerging while he grew up. With his first synth, the Korg Polysix, a lifelong passion was born. He started playing in bands in 1982, experimenting with electronics and the new world of sounds and possibilities. At the same time he started experimenting with records and discovered a natural talent for mixing and blending synths with records, creating his own unique world of sound. In mind that the CD wasn't invented, neither was the HD recorder, the heart in Flemmings set-up was a simple cassette recorder. An invention that should soon add yet another angle to his musical universe. With snappy skills and imagination, the cassette soon became his most important instrument taking him to the next level. The world of mixing. With sampler, echomachine, decks, synths and a beloved cassette recorder, the first true mixes came out of his studio already in 1983. Mixes with so much detail, soon giving him the legendary name "King of the cut". In the same year, 1983, Flemming stumbled across Koto "Chinese Revenge", a discovery that should soon lead Flemming into a brave new world matching his own, with synths and electronics being the heart of the music. The passion became strong and shortly after the Koto discovery, brought him to his first trip to Milan, Il Discotto, Discomagic, Non-Stop, Merak etc. to investigate the Italo phenomenon in detail. The following years Flemming visited the Italian distributors 11 times which later proves to be one of the major reasons to the fact that he has one of the worlds most complete collections of Italo and Disco. Through the years, the synths has been replaced with computers and equipment matching the urge for mixing. Something that has kept the true Italo spirit alive and made Flemming Dalum a legend in mixing today.
