Our 25th Anniversary slot this week features Richard Dorfmeister who appeared on the show in 2003 and featured many times as one half of Kruder and Dorfmeister, as well as his project Tosca with Rupert Huber, amongst others. Opening with ECM artist Steve Tibbetts, his mix floats between Gui Boratto, his own lush edit for Selah Sue, acoustic guitar of Jeb Loy Nichols and the dubbed out Rhythm & Sound featuring Cornell Campbell on vocals. He then weaves through Pat Metheney, the dub version of Sunset from Grace Jones' last album, blues from Ry Cooder and ending with a couple of tracks from his recent Tosca album 'Odeon'.

Welcome to the third instalment from Colin Dale and Jules Dickens’ Abstrakt Dance imprint, which was launched last summer. Jules Dickens’ ‘The Return EP’ featuring a remix by Russ Gabriel follows on from a great start to the label that has already seen EPs from Colin Dale and Sir Lord Commix.

Jules Dickens, renowned for his production work as Abstract Source, is a London based DJ and producer, as well as a studio owner and teacher. So, quite the busy man! But here, he takes time out from this hectic schedule to present his first release for Abstrakt Dance.

‘The Return EP’ opens with the deepness of ‘Another Place’ where a smooth groove meets washes of synth work and cool, housey beats. The Detroit-esque piano of ‘The Return’ follows on with its thumping bassline under layers of claps, cymbals and dappled electronics, before the melancholy melodies and acid-tinged effect of ‘Analog Soul’, the last of Jules’ original three workings takes hold.

The release ends in a flourish from Techno heavyweight Russ Gabriel who (for anyone who’s been in a coma since the 90s!) has had releases on Planet-E, Peacefrog, Soma and his own highly respected Ferox label amongst others, with more recent outings on the likes of Mobilee and Pokerflat to his name. His characteristic remix on ‘Analog Soul’ ends this quality EP in fine style, proving why this influential artist is still in such high demand.

Solid Steel (31st May) This week we present irk's new High On Beats mix, an eclectic selection of high energy beats and synth sounds. We kick off with heavy beats from Posij, Two Fingers and Ital Tek, then transition in to a drum and bass section including RAM, Neosignal and a rowdy new Black Sun Empire / Foreign Beggars collaboration. Switching up the style, the second half of the mix sits in a 110bpm groove, with rolling sounds from Proxy, Photek and this year's Nickodemus refix, then finally closes out with Bonobo's hypnotic Don't Wait.

DK opens hour 2 with Lone (another member of Hoya Hoya) with the huge 'Airglow Fires' and a whole host of music from the Ninja stable, including Machinedrum, Thundercat on Brainfeeder, Helena Hauff on Werkdiscs, Kid A on Technicolour and the legendary Congo Natty with a forthcoming track on Big Dada. Plus classic tracks from Maxx Traxx and Gino Soccio, before closing with Hackney Colliery Band and their version of Goldie's Inner City Life.
JuJu & Jordash close the show with a weird and wonderful selection just as we like it, taking in Anandar Shankar, Cabaret Voltaire, Sun Ra and The Art Ensemble of Chicago ending a show living up to the tagline 'The Broadest Beats'.

Flemming Dalum, also know as King of the cut, discovered his musical journey at an early age. An interest based out of curiosity for electronic synthesizer legends emerging while he grew up. With his first synth, the Korg Polysix, a lifelong passion was born. He started playing in bands in 1982, experimenting with electronics and the new world of sounds and possibilities. At the same time he started experimenting with records and discovered a natural talent for mixing and blending synths with records, creating his own unique world of sound. In mind that the CD wasn't invented, neither was the HD recorder, the heart in Flemmings set-up was a simple cassette recorder. An invention that should soon add yet another angle to his musical universe. With snappy skills and imagination, the cassette soon became his most important instrument taking him to the next level. The world of mixing. With sampler, echomachine, decks, synths and a beloved cassette recorder, the first true mixes came out of his studio already in 1983. Mixes with so much detail, soon giving him the legendary name "King of the cut". In the same year, 1983, Flemming stumbled across Koto "Chinese Revenge", a discovery that should soon lead Flemming into a brave new world matching his own, with synths and electronics being the heart of the music. The passion became strong and shortly after the Koto discovery, brought him to his first trip to Milan, Il Discotto, Discomagic, Non-Stop, Merak etc. to investigate the Italo phenomenon in detail. The following years Flemming visited the Italian distributors 11 times which later proves to be one of the major reasons to the fact that he has one of the worlds most complete collections of Italo and Disco. Through the years, the synths has been replaced with computers and equipment matching the urge for mixing. Something that has kept the true Italo spirit alive and made Flemming Dalum a legend in mixing today.
