Goa/Acid Trance  is not what I usually work with, but it was fun and a pleasure to do a DJ set for  Trance of the Buddha meets Chill Hub party, on May 28th 2023 in Toekomstmuziek, Amsterdam.
A 90 minutes journey with early classics between 1995 and 1999, with bpms between 134 and 148.

‘Gleekch’ was born on a fragmented day in 2014, whilst Clément Bordeau was experimenting in his DAW to create deconstructed melodies and Breakbeats. His music is lost somewhere between the realms of his influences; Dub aspects are found nestled in the middle of a verdant tree and a broken computer - adding acoustic instrumentation on top, to make it feel alive. FlibbertiGibbet is the DJ project of Tara Hawes – a compulsive music collector from an early age.

Growing up in Aotearoa/New Zealand, where her mother worked at a radio station when she was young, some of her earliest memories are being allowed to select which record to play next (if she behaved) – and of the excitement she felt when new vinyl came in – igniting a life-long passion for music. Following many years of promoting, organising and reviewing music events and basically working behind the proverbial ‘scenes’, she finally got behind the decks in ’13 and hasn’t looked back.

Tara loves playing everything from chill-out, downtempo, dub and minimal – to psy-breaks, mid-tempo and progressive. She says this end of the spectrum gives her the “freedom to creatively mix different genres and styles.” With her succinct aptitude to feel the mood of the crowd, she also loves to select tracks on the fly instead of playing a set list. 

Based just outside of London, Tara is a resident at top London psy nights Tribal Village and Astral Circus. With more and more bookings flying her way, she’s had lots of fun playing at all of the Psymera Summer Boat parties, Earthdance London, Turkey’s Psy Boutique Festival, Shattered Barriers, Elixir of Life, Alchemy Records presents Magic & Myths, the Infinite Bliss Transformational Psychedelic Healing Festival, Planet Bob’s Chai Emporium, Black Pearl Festival and many more. 

As half of Amaluna, with Zimbabwean-born Malkpa, 2018 saw them make their main room debut at Tribal Village and playing an epic three sets at that year’s Noisily Festival, where they warmed up for Saturday’s Zenon takeover on the Liquid Stage and got to play a second set between Breger and Evil Oil Man after the third DJ didn’t turn up – and got to share the stage with all-time musical idols Grouch and Sensient. They capped the day off with a downtempo set at the Bassport FM stage where they played some of their favourite psy bass tracks from the likes of Kalya Scintilla, Desert Dwellers and Clozee.

Tara has also shared line-ups with many of the artists who first inspired her to start mixing, like GAUDI, Hedflux, Ott., Slackbaba, James Monro, Bedouin, Pspiralife, Nanoplex, Monk3ylogic, Hamish, Quanta, Dataura, Sprocket and Nanosphere, as well as warming up for some of the greats of the psy scene.

Over the years, she’s helped promote many of the UK’s biggest psy events, including Halcyon, Antiworld and Elixir of Life. A multi-talented, multi-tasking extraordinaire, when she’s not behind the decks, she has produced editorial content for Boom Festival and, having worked as a music journalist for magazines and websites such as DJMag, HarderFaster.net and Dream Creation, she won the HarderFaster.net Feature Writer of the Year Award for four years running. One of the highlights of summer 2018 was collaborating with the Boom Festival Comms Team to produce the daily Boom Diaries, where she was inspired by so many awesome artists and got some great feedback from many stalwarts of the psy scene.

A gifted selector who has spent countless years contributing to the evolution of the dance music scene, she now has a relentless passion for working the crowd from behind the decks where she can really contribute to the vibe of the party. Signed to Free-Spirit Records in summer ‘17, the next step is to get into the studio and start learning to produce.
