Brand New Drum and Bass

We are proud to present all four installments of Random Movement's "The Remember Sessions" as a multi-volume LP representing previously incomplete music spanning the last 8 years that never made it to the finish line. Resurrected from the cutting room floor, these tracks have been given a modern polish and are at last ready to be presented in their final forms. All of the tracks have been left with their original working titles, because fuck it.

“Compilation albums have a special place in my heart and to mark our birthday year I really wanted to release a project that was distinctive and exciting. An album that showcases the diversity of the label, the talents of the many artists we work with and ties together the threads and themes the producers explore.

The 22 exclusive tracks here are a perfect snapshot of the sound that Critical is wanting to be at the forefront of : Underground drum and bass in many different forms but always with that cutting edge.

The physical album is a strictly limited edition 6 piece vinyl box set with artwork designed by Steiner Grafik. The box itself is beautiful with silver ink printed on both the inside and outer shell, the records are pressed on 120gsm virgin vinyl and the 6th plate has a special etching to commemorate the birthday.

We have a deluxe version too which is limited to 100 copies. This includes the album box , a special aluminium print of the artwork, a signed poster, a multi page fanzine designed by Studio Yasseen Faik, stickers and a slipmat. (update: Deluxe box sets have now sold out)

Soulful liquid sensation Hugh Hardie is back with his brand new ‘Inhale Exhale’ EP on Hospital Records. Featuring a range of talented artists including Phaction, Zoe Kypri and Javeon, Hugh Hardie has consistently contributed to the new wave of liquid drum & bass in recent years. Continuing onwards from his impressive streak of EPs including the sensational ‘Dream In Green’ EP , ‘Learning To Fly’ four-tracker and lockdown gem ‘7 Tunes In 7 Days, Hugh’s first standalone release of 2022 is yet another futuristic drum & bass treasure.

‘Got U Wrong’ opens the EP, welcoming warm vocals and sweet melodies alongside the Bristolian singer-songwriter Javeon who blesses the track with his sublime R&B charged vocals. Hugh Hardie and fellow liquid soul selector Phaction unite for their fourth collaboration, to provide an infectious, smooth roller layered with crunchy drums, glitched out synths and a pumping bassline.

‘Coulda Woulda’ is an upbeat bouncer with a healthy dose of skippy drum work and a flirtatious bass that glides through the mix like a knife through butter. Ravey vocal chops and hypnotic plucks throughout showcase Hugh’s innate ability as an all round studio samurai.

EP title track ‘Inhale Exhale’ featuring the immensely talented jazz and soul singer-songwriter Zoe Kypri shows Hugh Hardie flaunt his distinctive sound accompanied by Zoe’s heartfelt lyricism and moving harmonies. This is just the follow up you need after the pair’s initial link up on ‘Dream In Green’ last year which received huge BBC Radio 1 support from the likes of Annie Mac and Rickie, Melvin and Charlie.

Switching up the style for the final track of the EP, ‘Kodiak’ sees tearout wobbles, stomping drums and just the right amount of cowbell. Demonstrating his ability to venture over to the darker side of drum & bass, this ripper of a number is set to shell down any rave.

From years of experience perfecting his craft, Hugh Hardie’s trademark liquid rollers and supreme soulful cuts have seen support from his music come in from all angles of the dance music scene. With a solid selection of radio spins from the likes of Annie Mac, Laurent Garnier, Rickie Melvin & Charlie, René LaVice and Hybrid Minds, to plays on the dancefloor from DJ Marky, LTJ Bukem, Flava D, LSB, Lenzman & more, the calibre of Hugh’s music speaks for itself. "With the words of the Supreme Entity still ringing in their ears, Scruggs and Sonny Jim struggled to their feet and drew their revolvers from their holsters with practiced ease. Bewildered by their recent transposition to another realm of existence, the pair attempted to speak but found their words would make no purchase within the other’s ears as a vortex of furious natural energies whipped gale force winds beneath the brims of the pair’s 10-gallon hats. Looking to the center of this vortex, they saw that the entity before them had taken on a new and more familiar form. One of the entity’s arms now held a blade of expertly honed ironwood wrapped in thorned vines that tendriled their way along its body, whilst the other bore forth a set of scales imbalanced by a rotten, plagued, and roiling mass of blackened branch and bone alike.

“This world must return to balance,” came the voice of the supreme entity once more, distorted by the storm which raged around it. “My BURR OAK must be given reign to cleanse its lands of putrescence, to end the CRIMINAL ROMANCE which has brought such iniquity to this realm. Hear me now, for should you support its righteous crusade you shall be spared the indignity of being cleansed as a part of this decay.”

As termites through fallen wood, these words wriggled their way into the minds of Scruggs and Sonny Jim, drowning out the cacophonous sounds that had enveloped their eardrums in the presence of this fearsome foe. Wordlessly, the pair withdrew their aim from the entity, holstering their weapons and beginning to stride singlemindedly along a new path that now appeared before them as the glimmering light of a new dawn. Though they knew not how, the pair was certain that they would bring the BURR OAK into being once again, and in so doing enter into the creation of a new order balanced by the power of the natural world as embodied in its fearsome form."
BURR OAK debut CRIMINAL ROMANCE as the newest piece of the saga of their forthcoming album, delivering a cinematic slice of unrelenting Neurofunk that is set to convert even more of the EATBRAIN horde to the righteousness of their cause as the duo continues to reveal the prophetic implications of their chosen name in the leadup to their debut LP release.
