OH MY GOD! I was there - I didn't know it was recorded?! It was one LIVE SHOW! It was hot, rammed packed with real hip headz jumping around. QTip climbed the on top of the speaker stack to vibes with the people upstairs - which is where I was. I nearly lost my mind at that gig - i was such a lil tomboy then lol! Rest in Peace and Power Dave Trugoy the Dove Plug 2. An absolute tragic loss that I'm still in shock over. Sending love and support to his family and friends, and of course all the other fans like myself who literally grew up on De La Soul and Dave's voice and artistry. De La Soul is not dead however. Everyone should go out and buy and support their music when it starts streaming and becoming available for purchase in early March!

This is a mix I made last Friday evening of some of my favorite De La records and samples, with a focus on Plug 2's mastery of the written and spoken word. All vinyl except for one obscure guest spot that I love which he did with Moka Only awhile back.

Pete Rock Tribute Mix: James Brown

The Pharcyde is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their iconic album Labcabincalifornia by releasing a commemorative mixtape. In a collaborative effort, the #BeamMeUpSpinna mixtape is mixed by NYC’s DJ Spinna and features “Nasty Habits”, an unreleased joint from the vault that features Ralph Tresvant & Bobby Brown.  Imani & Bootie Brown also asked a group of producers to remix and add their own personal spin on a few of the Labcabincalifornia songs that you all know and love.

Dj Mike Relm re-works a mash up of “Drop”, SBBX remixes “Groupie Therapy”, Moka Only drops his version of “Y”, Ta'Raach teams up with Bootie Brown to co-produce “Devil Music, The Devils Kitchen Remix”, and The Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown remixes “Runnin’.”

DJ SPINNA is a heavily touted presence in the international soulful house music scene. He is known for his vast accomplishments as a producer, is celebrated for his “Soul Slam” events and Stevie Wonder inspired  WONDER-Full Dj performances and subsequent collaborations.

The Pharcyde’s sophomore album “LabcabinCalifornia” was originally released on November 14th, 1995. The group enlisted a young and then unknown James Yancey aka J DILLA to produce beats, like the cult classic “Runnin.”  They also collaborated with director Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich” “Adaptation”) on the video for “Drop.” Labcabincalifornia has consistently and continues to reinforce their steadfast refusal to tread familiar artistic grounds.

This is a super rare recording of one of Quest's last shows together on UK soil. The improvisation, live beat-making and freestyles are just amazing, really representing the golden era of this genre. The outstanding documentary 'Beats Rhymes & Life - Travels of a tribe called Quest reminded us of the genius but to hear a full live show with all the classics is something else...
