OH MY GOD! I was there - I didn't know it was recorded?! It was one LIVE SHOW! It was hot, rammed packed with real hip headz jumping around. QTip climbed the on top of the speaker stack to vibes with the people upstairs - which is where I was. I nearly lost my mind at that gig - i was such a lil tomboy then lol! 30 Years ago, Tribe's 'Midnight Marauders' & Wu's 'Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)' were released on Nov. 9, 1993.  For some, a hard decision had to be made that day: Do you go with the conscious vibes of Tribe, or the hard street raps of Wu?  The familiar sound of ATCQ, or the debut from the mysterious guys wearing hoodies with stocking caps covering their faces?  If you were lucky, you walked out of the store with both (paid or not). 

Those 2 albums changed my life, so 5 years ago on the 25th anniversary I created 'A Clan Called Wu - Enter The Marauders' as a tribute to both masterpieces.  This is the 2nd chamber in the Wu x Tribe blendtape saga.  The 1st volume featured Wu's gritty vocals over the jazzy Midnight Marauders instrumentals.  This is the reverse combo - Tribe's bouncy vocals over RZA's grimy production.   
No matter how you combine them, the marriage of the 2 forms like Voltron.  All the parts came together to make something new.  Different, yet the same.  Yin & yang.

This is a super rare recording of one of Quest's last shows together on UK soil. The improvisation, live beat-making and freestyles are just amazing, really representing the golden era of this genre. The outstanding documentary 'Beats Rhymes & Life - Travels of a tribe called Quest reminded us of the genius but to hear a full live show with all the classics is something else...

So this was my flip . I had Pete Miser come in and do some vocal snippets . I never knew what happened to the project but I did put a lot of work into this mix so I figured I would share it . In 1998 the divide within the rap game was at its most glaring. On one side of the stage stood the jiggy, “shiny suit era” mainstream rappers, with CD sales on their mind, expensive tastes, and a penchant for fly cars, clothes, money, cash and hoes. At the other end of the stage was the underground, “backpack”, independent scene, where rappers and crews still made time for college radio, performed small venue shows, and aimed more for putting out records on vinyl  than for selling CDs in stores. A strange state of affairs was that this was a year where the dichotomy of Hip Hop was at its furthest split. And then an album dropped and something happened. The deep chasm between the mainstream and the underground was filled, but not by much.

Yesterday marked the fourteenth anniversary of Black Star’s debut album. It was a higly anticipated release celebrated and critically acclaimed album immediately from the moment it dropped. It gave a celebrity face to the indy movement that was going on, and did it’s best to bridge the gaps between the polar-opposite movements that were co-existing inside of Hip Hop’s genre. Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, was the second full-length album on Rawkus Records and was the epicenter for the NYC underground movement.

Last week the good folks at Complex tackled another famous list by profiling 50 Best Rawkus Records Songs. Inspired by the idea honor Mos and Kweli’s epic release, and the label that birthed it, we figured it was our turn to pay respects as well. Sticking more to Rawkus released vinyls, which was the essence of the movement, we put together a list of 14 of the dopest B-Sides from Rawkus records.
