Lately I've been playing with a different approach to sound making - using a bunch of sine waves to create subtle but intricate rhythms in the sounds. You can hear frequencies coming in and out and sometimes hearing frequencies that emerge as the result of some simple waves colliding with each other.

Kawanabe Kyosai is the first track from Komachi, the first full length vinyl release from the inimitable Hiroshima based artist @Meiteijapan. As with his previous work, Meitei once again explores what he calls ‘the lost Japanese mood’, an era and culture that he hopes to keep in our collective consciousness as society moves away from some of Japans more traditional aesthetics.

Meitei - Kawanabe Kyosai [Pt.II]

Floating Spectrum is the moniker for Taiwan-born, Berlin-based composer and audio technologist, Mei-Fang Liau. Her debut album as Floating Spectrum, A Point Between – crafted from a combination of synthesizers, everyday household objects, and unique software synthesizers made by Liau herself – is truly a sound and vision unlike any other. To complete the album, Liau relied heavily on a self-made, fractal-inspired software synthesizer called Polyphylla, which simulates the way in which nature creates very complex and organic forms just by repeating slight variations of a simple form. It allowed Liau to create slowly evolving textures and sounds with complex dynamics, and thus the driving influence for the whole of A Point Between. The lone outlier is “Eruption,” for which Liau built a generative sound system that turns visual data into sound. In this hybrid system, sensitively fluctuating analog signals, fine-tuned data analysis, and human intuition perform together as one coherent living being. The technological marvels of Floating Spectrum are, of course, uniquely impressive. But the more astonishing and intangible triumph of A Point Between is its singular ability to collect and shape such abstract sonic organisms into richly textured, immersive works of art. It’s that profound resonance that makes A Point Between such an uncanny work of emotional and structural depth.

Mateo Hurtado creates techno and experimental music with an intuitive and analogue character. Deeply inspired by the surrealist movement, obscure symbolism and ritualistic incantations, his music seeks to invoke hidden, impossible images and bring to light the indecipherable messages buried in the unconscious.
Coming from a background which involves both early contact with more somber forms of musical expression as well as involvement and education in the world of art, his process and approach to electronic music seeks to overcome conventional boundaries of the genre and handle the musical material akin to the ideas of surrealism.  These concepts manifests themselves through an array of analog and digital, modular and conventional electronic instruments. Rather than doing DJ-Sets, Mateo has been focusing on heavily improvised live performances, in which shifting polyrhythmic material is fused with otherworldy, strange melodies, ritualistic drumwork and dronelike, shimmering athmospheric soundscapes.

In our 6th Mixtape, Floating Spectrum is presenting a selection of music specially put together to resonate with our audience; music that utilizes data from our universe, such as sounds of two merging black holes, earthquake or planetary data sonification, and many otherworldly songs that take you through a peculiar journey.

And it’s been crafted from a combination of synthesizers, everyday household objects, and unique software synthesizers made by Liau herself. 


Originally inspired by a dance performance for which Mei-Fang that explored the recurring cycles of nature. Liau also relied heavily on a self-made, fractal-inspired software synthesizer called Polyphylla, which simulates the way in which nature creates very complex and organic forms. It allowed Liau to create slowly evolving textures and sounds with complex dynamics. Furthermore, for one of the tracks, Liau built a generative sound system that turns visual data into sound. In this hybrid system, sensitively fluctuating analogue signals, fine-tuned data analysis, and human intuition perform together as one coherent living being. 

She shares that she wanted to make a mix that would be interesting to audiences of CLOTMagazine, somewhere between art, science and technology. Most tracks are tech-driven, otherworldly, and some of them utilize some sort of planetary data. You can hear the sounds of merging black holes, abstract representation of earthquake motion data, planetary motion in our solar system, etc. and she goes  even a step further: In my album, there are high dynamics among songs and within each song - surprises, contrasts, changes of moods, as if it was a sonic narrative. I tried to achieve similar dynamics with the mixtape to keep the listeners engaged throughout the journey. Many tracks have a blurry boundary between organic and digital sounds, which is also what I attempted to do in my album.

Floating Spectrum - Inner & Outer, Sept 2019

Taiwanese-born audio technologist Mei-Fang Liau moonlights as Floating Spectrum, a moniker that encompasses the immersive, cinematic soundscapes she conjures up. 

Her debut album, A Point Between, arrived last autumn on Temporary Residence, an exploration of organic and synthetic textures created through using everyday household objects, synthesizers and software synthesizers built by Liau herself. Built on the foundations of two compositions she wrote for a dance performance, she examined themes around life: how it emerges, flourishes and eventually decays and the emotions associated with these different phases. 

Her work is meditative, thought provoking and intricate, something that is stimulated by her technological ambition and her ability to create depth and texture in simplicity. 

Here she eases us into the new decade with a mix of beautiful, ambient soundscapes. Just what the doctor ordered...
