A journey to Berlin in 1985, when the city was still surrounded by the GDR, was an unforgettable experience. In the track you can hear the moment we reached Berlin, driving along the AVUS, where suddenly the colors of life seemed to return after the grayness before. It feels good to know that this chapter of history came to an end in 1989 – and that today we are united again.

A nearly-lost existential house anthem from Chicago’s second generation, heavily under the influence of Ron Hardy, European EBM, and the struggle of daily life in the city’s marginalised neighbourhoods.
LITIA=LOE (Life In The Insane Asylum = Life On Earth) formed in Chicago amidst the burgeoning house movement of the 80’s. 

Leon Williams, Daryl Wilson, and brothers Grant and Simeon Rogers would meet up every weekend to soak up the sounds at local clubs like Music Box, Medusa, The Power Plant, The Warehouse, and Frankie Knuckles’ Dance Palace, where DJs would mix everything from disco to new wave, industrial to house music. After the clubs closed, they would retreat to Leon’s basement to experiment with synths, inspired by what they had just witnessed at the clubs.

At the time, the record barely made it out of Chicago, but the group did have a chance at notoriety. Rocky Jones of D.J. International Records offered up a “Blood contract” for joining the label. The group declined and the group remained a mystery.

More than 30 years later Each Dawn Every Dawn will finally be available again (no blood contracts needed). Due out though Left Ear records and Mixed Signals,  on the 27th of March 2020. Distro through Rushhour, Seance Centre or Direct in the Antipodes

Barcelonian duo Iro Aka describe the process behind their debut album as "a journey through the shadows and lights derived from the global crisis". 'Passatge de les Ombres' is inspired by the Japanese term 'ukiyo', which in the Buddhist tradition could be translated as "world of misery" but that later came to refer to the hedonist lifestyle that developed in the cities of the Edo-period Japan. This urban culture removed the negative connotations of 'ukiyo' and gave it another meaning: the 'floating world'. The term then began to be used to describe the way the city dwellers forgot their problems through cultural activities and Epicurean pleasures. 'Passatge de les Ombres' draws a parallel between that two-sided concept and the current situation, evoking a trip through a symbolic tunnel in which darkness and introspection intersect with escapism and hope. Eight cuts filled with nocturnal atmospheres and meditative landscapes that lead us through the 'passage of shadows' referred to in the album title. A highly evocative musical journey that represents the emotional development experienced during these difficult last months while reminding us that there's always a ray of light amidst darkness. At least as long as we can keep floating.

The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint’s inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions, offering up a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars: all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space.

While all of Innate’s previous releases have tended towards the futuristic and otherworldly, EP number four explores the label’s love of stargazing electronic music much more explicitly. It features tracks that tend towards the timeless, mixing shimmering, life-affirming melodies, starburst electronics and twinkling chords. 

The A-side is all about deep, melodious and spacey electro, with tracks coming courtesy of two artists who are at very different stages in their musical careers. Up first is Steven Brunsmann AKA Aroy Dee, an experienced and much-loved Dutch scene stalwart making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. “Leegte”, his sole outing of 2020 so far, is impressively immersive with Brunsmann cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi electro beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chord sequences. The second slab comes courtesy of Innate label regular Gilbert, whose dedication to the more melodious and ear-catching end of the machine soul spectrum has been such a feature of the imprint’s releases to date. “Furthest Planet” may well be his most inspired musical workout yet: a deep electro roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics, yearning chords and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

Over on side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the vibrant, multi-coloured sci-fi shimmer of techno in its purest form. First to make his mark is label newcomer Jonski, an alternate alias for fast-rising Bristol electro producer Zobol (real name Jon Chimielewski). “Venusian Surface” is classic star-gazing techno, with vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles, bubbly TB-303 motifs and alluring lead lines rising above a classic tech-funk bassline and bustling machine drums. To round of a great EP in style, Innate turns to effervescent Welshman DJ Guy. Fresh from inspired outings on Unthank and Other World Music, the Cardiff-based producer slams down a sweaty, energetic and forthright techno stomper. “Aphelion Orbit” boasts some brilliantly breathless, jacking drum programming – all machine-gun snare fills and snappy handclaps – but it’s the celestial shimmer of the accompanying chords and melodies that lingers longest in the memory. It’s a perfect conclusion to Innate’s most melodious and action-packed release to date.
