This sensational genre defined the tail end of the 20th century, playing out the fantasies of mainstream USA to a global market. A maligned genre, it can surprise in its complexity, beauty and subversion. Aesthetically cool as fuck with some all time fave music. Alongside classics like 80s De Palma, Joe Eszterhas 90s vehicles for Sharon Stone and a touch of Linda Fiorentino (who is stunning in John Dahl’s superb The Last Seduction) expect cross genre moods and plenty of sleazier Direct To Video films (Gregory Dark’s empire). This genre borrowed from itself, the DTV soft core porn and blockbuster / art house end of the spectrum sharing tropes within its own eco system which during its 90s peak was a cultural phenomenon. Some DTV moments being visually as stunning as say, 90s Abel Ferrara or Donald Cammell’s Wild Side. A forever fascinating and understudied genre. I highly recommend The Erotic Thriller in Contemporary Cinema by Linda Ruth Williams for anyone interested in diving further, the first full length study of the genre.

Sounds On Screen Hal Hartley focuses on a filmmaker who is a TRUE independent to this day! His films are philosophical, cool and melancholy. A focus on music - wether from the likes of Yo La Tengo or Pavement or his own Ned Rifle - has always been a key component, alongside beautiful design & great actors monologues. He’s continued to make cinema in an independent and experimental way; like his adoption of video in projects with PJ Harvey (as Mary Magdalene in Book Of Life) and long time collaborator Parkey Posey, to his fundraising model, allowing works to be made as intended. This show is a dedication to actress Adrienne Shelly, who was tragically murdered in 2006. Shelly lit up the screen in Hartley’s pictures and would’ve gone on to star in so many more iconic works and direct her own 💔

Thomas Newman is my favourite contemporary Hollywood composer, an auteur with glowing moods and textures. For many years Newman's scores have accompanied me, there’s a warm melancholy and sentimentalism, but then a coolness, experimental, never the stuffiness that can occur in the realms of Hollywood scoring. Newman uses unorthodox instruments and there's these emotive shifts; so precise to each film, creating their own bubble and what threads all the scores together is this Newman sound of wonder, beautiful and exciting. It’s pure movie feelings! Coming from a Hollywood composing dynasty - one of the most important in film music history; the tree includes his cousin Randy Newman and Alfred his father, a key player of The Golden Age - he’s soundtracked some of the most iconic films and TV of the 90s-00s alongside quiet indies and cult classiques. I smile every time I hear his work at the titles. Too many moments to get into BUT recently a special fondness for ‘Flesh and Bone’ (Dir. Steve Kloves, 1993, stunning 1st half) that’s been on repeat all year and TV movie ‘Those Secrets’ (Dir. David Manson, 1992, oddball gem). I was asked by noods radio to celebrate mayday 2023 through the Avon moot, a day of celebrating English folklore and it’s mythology ~~ I used this chance to put together an hour sound collage regarding folk myth and ghost stories and the occult in British film & TV, paying a particular homage to the BBC's iconic Play For Today and Ghost Stories series, and all their one off wondrous and haunting TV films / plays in 70s/60s including Alan Clarke (re) discoveries. There’s also the OG Ben Wheatley and his incredible contemporary input, newer Warp films, The Innocents 1961 which to this day is the be all end all of feminine ghostly beauty, myths and fears from the sea, paganism, Charles Dickens and weird church alters - folklore in all its forms - whistling through A Field In England via long summers grass and into the foggy mists of the grey coastline fought by crowns and Cromwell. What an incredible lineage and history uk television has !! So many weird and wild works !! … thank you noods for the invite

back again with my end of year mixtape & essay for my mubi notebook magazine column, this mix is very much more like a personal one rather than an end of year in films round up. for someone who in part works around the release of new films, I don't actually end up getting to see it all and Im not always so up to date and I hate the idea of some sort of contrite 2024 round up mix. when making my cinema sound work I always try and bend the material in front of me to find alternative possibilities of narrative or (re)context or to reintroduce it to the world, it has to be a devotion to something that incredibly excites me. I found that making this mix (deep in the night at a friends in a chaotic time) there were so many personal favourites (suicide, dean blunt, silver apples, throbbing gristle, etc) moods and textures that I’m drawn to, that the 70 odd minutes was more akin to putting together an end of year catharsis work than studying the music and sounds within the last years cinema. and the film list was not a best watch, some I only found through the sounds making this (although some do slap hard and I watched b4hand) but sonics I picked up on and felt helped make the collage through their sonic worlds. kevin costner still got it

My sonic ode to filmmaker Kelly Reichardt compromised of various scores,  OST & sounds from her films, interviews and field recordings. Reichardt's work quietly and sincerely holds a torch up for the working class and outcasts; it speaks for the moments in between the action - for the tenderness and ambiguity of friendship, solitary thought, animals and nature.
Minimalism with a glow so rare and genuine; mundane situations are observed with a heartbreaking understanding of life’s melancholy. She elevates this to tell us something of the inner self, detachment of society and community - truly one of the best filmmakers working today.
