We saw in the New Year and celebrated all 24 hours of the 1st January in the best of company, celebrating ever-deepening friendships and starting 2022 in the way we know best with 10 top DJ friends gracing the decks at Kimber. Magic happens here: years change numbers, kitchens become dance floors, dancers levitate, love emanates from every corner…

I had an absolute blast playing this set, following on from badass DJs Ebru Al and Ed Real who had whipped up the energy on the dance floor and so opened the door for me to play some big dirty tracks. Top points to Mike Boorman who noticed “the garage door closing” as the set travelled into my more melodic style, exploring some newer finds, alongside a few old favourites that I’ve so enjoyed playing over this past year. 

Secret weapons and hi-lights were Joris Voorn’s ‘The Navigator’ which is an absolute monster, and Roman Fluegel’s Look to the Sky’ - a track that takes you to the very edge of sanity. Weekend Heroes - Late Bloomers was a hugely welcome late find and just builds and builds on its epicness. Sam Hopgood’s ‘Waiting’ is another beauty that I’m so glad I got to play, and the Tinlicker remix of Alt-J’s Breezeblocks has a beautifully nostalgic feel, and went down a storm.

The set is bookended with two very special tracks by Joris Voorn. I had heard him play the opening track ‘Life’ at a set in London in 2017 and had been unable to find it for years, until just a few days before NYE, when I stumbled across it quite by accident. The closing track ‘Left’ is older still, from an album that has been in my collection since 2014 - long before I had started to DJ. The whole album is timelessly beautiful and as such, permanently imprinted on my mind.

The enigma that is Township Rebellion will be heading down under for their debut Australian appearance. The German-born duo, who have been working collaboratively since 2013, has been flying under the radar for years now, but recently they have started to turn some heads with their carefully executed main room sound that has found favour with a global audience. 

Already this year they have worked their magic on punters at Fusion and Unterholz Music Festivals, and their latest EP, the deliciously titled ‘Balance', is a perfect example of the Township Rebellion sound: affecting progressive melodies and big deep basslines that is undeniable. As their career rapidly continues on an upward trajectory, now is the time to join the Rebellion.

Steve Marx has been a regular fixture on the Sydney & London club scenes for over 2 decades now after making the move from his hometown in 1996. A regular on the Sydney scene, Steve could be found at the infamous Hordern Pavillion parties in the late eighties and early nineties where he developed his interest and passion for electronic music by leading the charge at clubs such as Base and The Front. Having made the move to London, he quickly discovered a taste for nights like Malibu Stacy, Tyrant & Renaissance and soon got himself in amongst the smaller nights where an exciting underground scene was developing alongside the rise of the superclub. 

In 1999 he met Ben Clarke and Francis Mallinson and the Synchronize parties were born. I first met him in 2002, where he could be often be found in Plastic Fantastic Records or at Digression in Soho, where up and coming DJs mixed with other arty types sharing a beer and common musical ideas.

Maybe it was that year that made the man and alongside Nick Dawes, he co-organised the Shadow 001 event at the Fortress Studios for World DJ day, playing alongside Rowan Blades, Paolo Mojo and Jonathan Lisle in an event where proceeds went to The Nordoff Robbins Children’s Charity.

Guest slots at Renaissance @The Ministry of Sound, and many of London’s smaller cooler underground nights began coming as well monthly gigs in Amsterdam, Zurich and further afield across Europe became the norm, playing alongside Sasha, Nick Warren & to name but a few.

Often specialising in the closing set, Steve knows how to work a room, through skillful programming, expert track selection and above all tight mixing and is always an entertainer, both behind the decks and on the dancefloor, Progressive House flows through his DNA and remains he remains at the front of the curve as far track selection and finding the groove goes. 

Fast forward to 2016 after a musically hiatus has now firmly planted back in his hometown and birthplace Sydney. With music on his mind, Steve is on the rise again, supporting John Digweed for T-1000 events and one of the founding members of Jigsaw with musical aficionado’s and partners Eddy Wells, Neil Smith and Kate Bailey.

2017 has been nothing short amazing,  with a request to warm up from no other than El Maestro Hernan Cattaneo @ Electric Gardens afterparty alongside Guy J, Guy Mantzur & Eelke Kliejn, so much so that an impromptu b2b took place with Eelke on that very evening, something for the musical CV some would say. 
Come 2019 and Steve has firmly established himself as an in demand local artist with regular appearances for Return To Rio, T1000 Event, Boots & Catz and a host of other nights in Sydney & Interstate. The horizon of forthcoming shows and appearances is always looking bright and for that Steve is always grateful.

Florian Kruse (Last Night On Earth / Kompakt)

There aren’t many people that can say that they have devoted their entire life to electronic music, Florian is most certainly one of them. DJ, producer, lecturer, plus label owner? Yes, Kruse has ticked all the boxes. 

His passion for music began in his hometown in Northern Germany. An avid reader of Frontline magazine, and later the Raveline, his love for electronic music was born at 14, when he bought his first turntable. Early influences included legends such as Moodyman, Herbert and Steve Bug. At 16, Kruse invested in his first sampler, a mixer and a keyboard. With music in mind, he made the natural migration to Hamburg in 2002, where he studied Audio Engineering, and later taught at SAE. 
Long time in the game, he started his music career in 2007, with his first vinyl release on Stokholms, Heya Hifi. Since then, Kruse has only grown as both a producer and a DJ. With Stel Vassiloudis and Nils Nuernberg, he became project Wiretappeur, with releases on Bedrock and a remix for label head honcho John Digweed. Nils Nuernberg quickly became his partner in crime, and together became the production duo Kruse & Nuernberg, their hypnotic Deep House sound making appearances on Liebe*Detail, Exploited, and Rejected. In 2008 they started their own label, Save Room Recordings. 
A focus on his own productions, Kruse plunged into a solo career with a release on Anjunadeep, working together with his older brother Vincenzo and one of his long time idols Lisa Shaw. Followed by releases on Noir Music, Poker Flat Recordings, Stil Vor Talent, Joris Voorn’s GREEN imprint, Kompakt, Last Night On Earth and Suara and remixes by Noir, Eagles & Butterflies, Joris Voorn, Pleasurekraft, Coyu, David Morales and the list of releases and remixes goes on. After a couple of feature tracks with singer / songwriter Hendrik Burkhard Florian and Hendrik started a LIVE project presenting ‘TheGround’ with an album (Dediction) in October 2017 on Steve Bug’s Audimatique label.
With long time passion for house and techno that dates back to the early years, Kruse is first and foremost a DJ, taking his signature sound to world renowned clubs. Now settled in the German capital, Berlin, a true hub for electronic music, with regular DJ appearances at the city's infamous underground clubs.
