Looking out the window at the clouds in the sky on a stormy day after the Brexit vote and the election of Trump, FLOTSZAM was listening to Joni Mitchell “Both Sides Now” on her phone in the bath. As politicians who lied and divided people won, the political climate had combined with a personal crisis, surrounding her in darkness. Half underwater she tried to find hope in music and the sky. Mitchell’s clouds felt the same as hers as she had an idea, hit record and wrote “Under the Same Sky”.

Influenced by Trip Hop artists Portishead and Massive Attack, this song is a downtempo electronic and chill.

Before launching his solo project, Zolton spent many years as the guitarist and vocalist for Sydney bands, Lucid and Jetstream. After Jetstream disbanded, Zolton moved to New York where he gave music away and focused on a new career running a digital media company. During that time, he launched the music and culture website, Lost At E Minor, which was a vehicle through which to promote and encourage the talent of some Australia’s hottest emerging creatives.

At the end of 2016, Zolton moved back to Sydney and was re-invigorated to get back into creating music again. He began work on a new musical project that incorporated big 80s-styled synths, beats, and melodic hooks.

Songs from the edge of somewhere. Bluesy, soulful rock with roots in folk and blues, shaped by years of traveling and chasing sound.

My debut album Strange Part of the Country earned ★★★★ from Q Magazine, a Blues Matters cover feature, and reached #3 on the U.S. Alternative Radio Chart, with airplay on BBC Radio 2, WWOZ New Orleans, and KROQ Los Angeles. Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac), Marc Ribot, and Danny Thompson have all been part of the journey.

I’m now finishing a new album with Marc Ribot, Tchad Blake, and Danny Thompson — music that digs deep, raw and real.
