The Era

After Phaeleh's legendary <a href="http://bit.ly/1hKWqmy"> i-DJ mix</a> there was no way we could pass up an opportunity to have him back. This time he takes on the Slumber Session and packs in a tonne of unreleased exclusive material to deliver this beautiful, ethereal soundtrack to help you journey through your dreams. Take time, kick back, zone out and drift off. This one is special.

"This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

The man behind the huge 'Feel What I Feel' is gearing up to release another banger in the form of 'Hope I'm Wrong'. Forthcoming on French Express, the track is another heavy slice house magic. With huge remix work under his belt for the likes of Duke Dumont, Tensnake and London Grammar, he's certainly paving himself a path to greatness. Here we are with our 180th show. What an interesting number huh? Can't wait until our 200th show. Lately i've been on a mission digging harder than I've ever had. I don't know what it is, something about digging for original samples, educating you on it and then playing the newer edits/remixes/perspectives are so appealing to me. I focused on a lot of rare/forgotten Neptunes samples this time along. I remember hearing some of these when I was about 10-12 years old but they didn't really resonate with me. But now they make complete sense and sound better than ever. I sprinkled some new tunes and other OG samples and just had fun with it.


On the other hand, I had my first guest: Hannah Faith who is my label mate. She really been impressing me lately with her mixes and the way she has been branding herself independently with very minimal help from Soulection. I love when people are self-sustainable and can brand themselves on their own. She just got a show on NTS every 3rd Saturday of the month @ 1pm (GMT). She dropped a 40 minute mix full of selects that we never heard before. Pay attention to her.

Summer Dream

It's unclear as to whether Moscow's 813 named himself in reference to Tampa, FL's area code, but the young Russian producer is dropping Floridian levels heat on this mix as he follows up a release on Mad Decent free label Jeffree's with Body Race, out on Hyperboloid on June 2. The EP is three tracks with titles like "Dick Cash and Burger," and "Biscuit Palace." It's hyper-ized internet bass, somewhere between PC Music and Trippy Turtle and is another of many notable releases for hometown label Hyperboloid.

This mix, 813's first for THUMP, kicks off on the internet tip, but before long hip-hop takes over as the dominant flavor and then it's all about Mainstage turnup vibes as Skrillex, Snoop Dogg, and DJ Snake pop up alongside Mr. Carmack and Rustie. Apparently it's already the weekend in Moscow.
