Our 18th episode welcomes @julya-karma, a NYC-based DJ & producer with roots extending from Lebanon to California, and through her musical abilities, and contagious energy, has quickly emerged in New York's underground scene.

Julya's connection to sound started early as she began studying classical piano at the age of 6, and since, has been passionately involved in music at every stage of her life. As an obsessive curator, she finds mixing to be the perfect format for creating an atmosphere of deep, moving melodies, eclectic sounds, and stimulating progressions. An artist bound by no genre, Julya tells powerful, emotional stories through her music, and her live performances allow audiences to unite together to transcend beyond time and enter a higher level of consciousness.

Inspired by amazing travels, and having met many beautiful human beings, as well as attending festivals and experiencing Burning Man several times, we felt like doing something similar for the community in Switzerland.

Heal Play Love Podcast Nr. 18: Julya Karma

A little backstory about this set... When I first got booked to play Tale of Iele I was beyond honored. I got right to work researching the area of Transylvania, the specific medieval citadel I'd be playing in, and of course the myth of the Iele, in order to truly grasp a feel for and establish the sound of which I wanted to embody. I wanted it to be sexy and dark, a little creepy, but still fun and danceable, while remaining true to my world music style, and as always, I wanted to tell a story. So I started drafting what would be v 1 (of perhaps 1000) of the poem heard at 3 points throughout the set. I was lucky enough to recruit the help of talented wordsmiths and friends @poetcalledl and @the_real_ja_rite to assist me on my conquest. Truly I cannot thank these two special humans enough for their talent, creativity, collaboration, and above all, their patience. It was a much more arduous task than I'd imagined, and being a perfectionist, I would catch myself nitpicking the tiniest words or grammatical nuances. But, in the end, I couldn't be more happy about the outcome, so I truly thank you both for making my vision come to fruition.  I hope you all enjoy it!

The Tale:
There once was a land, many moons before our time
Transylvania it is called today
known for the seductive and sublime
 
At its highest mountain peak stood a fabled fortress, 
Citadel Rupea, as it is known
And it is the place that the seed of this sacred story is sown
 
On the 23rd Eve of the month of June,
The fortress watchmen spotted women in white
With flowers in their hair, and hardly a care, 
they danced a greeting to the night
 
He recognized them as the mythical Iele, thought only to be a tale
In which, it is said, to not join in their joyous dance could cause a man’s heart to fail
 
He became entranced by the wondrous women; 
as the surrounding air turned increasingly erotic. 
They were devastatingly beautiful and their song… 
was hauntingly hypnotic

Soon enough, the dancing came to a halt
As if they’d detected the watchman’s gaze, 
They turned to him with eyes of fire 
Condemning him in horrific ways

They took to the air and flew toward the moon 
leaving the watchman behind
And in that final moment He knew 
The Iele had rendered him deaf, dumb and blind
--
We gather here on this 23rd Eve of June 
to take our own chilling chance
So heed the call when the Iele look your way,  
and dare not deny their invitation to dance.

On Monday afternoon my camp Rise and I headed out for the first time on our artcar. Driving all across Burning Man for five hours was the perfect way to get a sense of the magnitude of this incredible spectacle. Besides my fellow Rise family more and more people hopped on the artcar. The vibe was incredible! And this ended up being one of my favourite memories of the week.

At one point we were cruising deep playa while the sun was setting. The artcar was super packed. Everything is covered in a smooth golden light. People dancing. People holding on to the car on their boards. People cruising along on their bikes. This was such a surreal and magical scene to experience. And int he back of our minds we were all realizing that this was only the first day. This was only the beginning of one of the most special weeks of our lives.

As it all happened very spontaneously, nothing was recorded, and so I decided to re-record part of this memorable journey and share it with you.

Over the course of an electronic music obsession more than 20 years strong, Mark Slee has evolved a deep musical style that reflects a unique personality, blending intuition and introspection with a methodical approach to production and curation.

Fully committed to digging the troves of modern dance music, Slee aims to uncover releases that stand out. His monthly mix show on Proton Radio showcases his discoveries, with over 100 mixes presented in the past decade. In 2016, Slee joined forces with musical partner Atish to form the label Manjumasi. Debuting with his own Nocturne Belle EP, Manjumasi celebrates quirky dance music that explores new territory without forgetting the dance floor. Beyond Manjumasi, Slee's original productions and remixes have been released on such imprints as Cityfox, Seven Villas, Lost Diaries, Cosmic Society, Magician On Duty, Nugget, Where the Heart Is, Proton Music, and more. In addition to regular appearances on his San Francisco home turf, Slee's style has earned him DJ sets in notable locales, such as Kater Blau and Sisyphos in Berlin, Cityfox in New York, and Robot Heart.

Since 2016 Slee has also been developing immersive, spatial audio-visual production tools for systems of up to 32 channels via Envelop. Notable live performances with Envelop include MUTEK.SF and FORM Arcosanti.

Mark Slee @ Desert Hut Podcast Series [Chapter XXXIV]

For me music is all about creating a journey and although you can create a journey in a track itself, or in a one hour podcast, 3 hours and 33 minutes is giving you the opportunity to take this journey to a whole other level. In order to make this special I dove deep into my music library. There are a lot tracks in this journey that have been favorites for a while. But I have also been focusing on tracks that shaped me before I was DJing. Most mixes I make consist of a lot of new music, but this journey, especially the last part, consists of tracks that are very dear to me and had a big impact on my life. These tracks opened up my eyes to what was possible in music, and moreover, to what music was doing to me. Listening to the these tracks triggers a deep feeling of gratitude. Gratitude for the incredible journey music has given me. 

But this mix is not just about the past, it is also showcasing where I’m heading. It includes a lot of new unreleased work. The last months have been rather unusual and that has given me opportunity to really think about where I want to go. Moreover it has given me the time to experiment, explore and engage in new projects. This has created a musical vision that is not limited to the clubbing scene. I want to create music that resonates.

Fejká der Traumtänzer

Fejká begann im zarten Alter von 17 mit dem musizieren. Dabei lässt sich seine musikalische Ausrichtung irgendwo zwischen Deep House sowie atmosphärischem Downtempo verortnen. Fejká balanciert auf der Mitte. Er möchte kraftvollen und gleichermaßen verträumten Sound erzeugen. Musik zu der man tanzen, sowie auch entspannt die Augen schließen kann. 
2017 veröffentlichte Fejká seine Debüt EP Twilight. Die Songs erschienen auf Ki Records, dem Label von Christian Löffler. Dieser nahm den jungen Fejká von da an unter seine Fittiche und unterstützt ihn, wo er nur kann. 
Der heutige KataHaifisch Podcast lässt sich am besten mit dem Adjektiv magisch-verträumt beschreiben. Beim hinhören schweifen die Gedanken ab. Zeitweise tritt eine sanfte Melancholie ins Bewusstsein, dann wieder freudige Gelassenheit. Der 61 minütige Mix fließt durch einen hindurch wie ein einziger Track. Ein Fluss bestehend aus Frequenzen, Instrumenten und positiven Vibes.
