URSL PODCAST #31 I Kuriose Naturale & Moogli

How many of us look at the time and it is always 22:22 or 11:11 and so on? For some people, it doesn’t mean anything and they call it a simple coincidence, but for others like me, or other ‘Flow-ers' it means that you are at the right place, merging with the flow of life or that someone is thinking of you! I locked myself up for this 3:33:33.33.33 sets (yes it’s all about details)standing in front of my CDs, and CDJs, and started recording this set. It all started with a joint and ended up in a disco-ish party passing through some weird, joyful and acid-ish flows. This set is a good representation of what I love to play depending on the gigs. A wide range of carefully selected music and a lot of upcoming tracks, collabs, edits and remixes produced over these last two crazy years! Flow Sessions 093 - RAMMÖ

For my upcoming Australian debut, this 03:hr:33min long audio journey gave me the opportunity to play with energetic dancefloor music, progressive elements, melodic vocal tracks, and leftfield indie vibes, and of course a few tracks accompanied with electric violin to describe the musical story. Playing such an extended set, I felt like hiding some unreleased music in between this never-ending romance with sound - so enjoy it with a good pair of speakers and casual sense of humour! Allow yourself to be danced by the music and don’t take it all too seriously. <3 Seth @seth-schwarz

If you were to ask, DADADISCO wouldn't name a single specific source of their inspiration. These two French gourmands take in and digest pretty much everything, from hard rock and heavy metal to synthetics and ambience... That means you can expect anything from Denis and Guillaume but cliché. Design, art, cinema and fashion are just as important to them as music. And it all comes through in their sets. These gents are very much the products of the "promiscuous and omnivorous" disco mayhem, forever imprinted in the collective memory of club culture as Bar25. It was through this jolly demonic mill, fumes and flames, thick and thin, that this combo blazed their way onto Berlin's raucous music scene. Veritable performers, their epic endless sets were somewhat of a cross between music and circus. When it closed for good, DADADISCO went global, spreading their retro-futuristic sound along with their overtly surrealist attitude. "Dada" in their name refers, of course, to a movement that in the mid-20th century famously repudiated and mocked all sorts of artistic conventions while emphasizing the illogical and absurd. DADADISCO keeps experimenting with genres and influences to discover and deliver their own unique blend of sexy electronica, always favouring spontaneity over etiquette. The name sticks on all of these counts.

Normally, podcasts are easy to do and being motivated, one goes to work in exciting anticipation to let the latest delicacies and accumulated "podcast records" shine.
At 3hrs 33min though, the situation is different. We rummaged deep in the record crate, full of enthusiasm knowing exactly what was being played. Dissatisfied with the result and a musical existential crisis not far away, we reflected and rethought the essence of our music: who are we and what do we want anyway? With detective acumen, we conducted acquisitions for weeks and dove into old and new realms in search of the undefinable. Back to the roots...

Colourful, exuberant, deep, dark, melancholic, sexy, quirky, lazy and always in search of endlessness, And you never know what's coming...
A vulnerable intimacy that you share with loving tolerance with other stranded people and collectively sink into the moment.
Letting yourself drift together, making time an elastic concept. letting yourself go in the endlessness of the moment, far removed from reality.

It's done. One of the most powerful mixes we've had the pleasure to record so far is in the can. 

We are proud to present our Flow Mix, which is a cross section of our last three years of downtempo with a pinch of reminiscence. On board are many of our own productions, which we are finally proud to show the world in one big mix. 
Much of the style of Dj mixes we represent today may not be immediately recognisable in it. But we still keep familiar principles, because the essence is always the same: the emotion, the smirk and of course grooves for days!
The journey starts quietly and with deep sound and gains momentum as it goes on. 
It ends as it begins: with guitars. The full circle.

🗯🗯 Wie hat Corona dein Künstlerleben verändert? 🗯🗯

Unser Künstlerleben quasi ist komplett eingefroren. Wir hatten übers Jahr zwei Gigs. Die haben wir sonst mindestens pro Monat. Es ging halt nichts. Zum Glück sind wir davon finanziell nicht abhängig, weil wir eigentlich andere Dinge machen, um unseren Lebensunterhalt einzufahren. Ich würde da mit jenen, die mit dem Auflegen ihr Leben finanziell meistern, nicht tauschen wollen. Und dennoch fehlt das. Nicht nur finanziell, vor allem eher soziokulturell. Die gemeinsame Eskalation, das Ausrasten, die kollektive Ekstase. Das sind ja auch Gründe, warum wir das, was wir da machen, so lieben - und das war halt ab März einfach mal so weg. Gänzlich. Das fehlt nicht wenig. Und dennoch sind die Maßnahmen natürlich notwendig und auch richtig. Das ist vielleicht das größte Dilemma an all dem - man kann das nicht mal irgendwem übelnehmen oder seinen Ärger auf irgendwen projizieren. Weil es ist wie es ist und weil es genau so sein muss.

Und wir konnten aufgrund der vielen freien Zeit endlich mal unser Album fertigmachen, das nun Ende Dezember erscheinen wird. Einer der wenigen Vorteile.

🗯🗯 Wo hast du diesen Mix aufgenommen? Wie ging es dir dabei? 🗯🗯

Wir haben beide ein bisschen die Schnauze voll von unseren Soundcloud-Streams. Seit Monaten nur noch Bummelschneckentechno auf allen Kanälen. Nicht selten sehr uninspiriert, sehr lame. Ich kann es, bis auf wenige und doch gute Ausnahmen, nicht mehr hören. Also dachten wir so, „lass mal das  Bums-Zeug von früher spielen. Das kennen doch die ganzen jungen Leute ja gar nicht nicht mehr!“ Und so war das. Dann  ballerten wir im Studio die Monitore fast auf Anschlag, machten die Fenster auf (weil Rudi  unbedingt beim Auflegen im Studio rauchen wollte und da wird halt eigentlich nicht drin geraucht) und dachten, dass irgendwer der Nachbarn die Bullen rufen würde. Was keiner tat. Wir tranken viel zu viel Schnaps, Rudi kam irgendwann mit Sekt um die Ecke und ging erst gegen 04:30. Es ist mal wieder alles komplett eskaliert - und wir lieben das. Das Studio stinkt immer noch wie eine Berliner Raucherpinte zu Beginn der 90er Jahre. Aber das war das den Abend wert.

🗯🗯 Was wünscht du dir für die Zeit nach oder mit Corona? 🗯🗯

Gigs, Festivals, Meeresrausch, gemeinsame Eskalation, das Ausrasten, die kollektive Ekstase. Und Pyros.

🗯🗯 How Did Corona change your artist life? 🗯🗯

Corona turned my artist life completely upside down. Even though I still had the chance to play a few shows during the summer, the majority of my gigs got cancelled. I have no proper income since March and I’m depending on financial support from the government since a few months. It was not always easy to be creative in the studio. Mentally 2020 was a rollercoaster with a lot of ups and downs but I’ve found new inspiration and produced plenty of new music.

🗯🗯 Where did you record the mix and how did you feel? 🗯🗯

I recorded it in my studio at Holzmarkt. I mixed new tunes with older ones and added a couple of my own edits, as always. Since I’m not playing regularly anymore I really appreciated the opportunity to do a mix for you guys. It is something I always loved to do and it reminds me of my first steps as a DJ, making mix tapes for my friends.

🗯🗯 What are your wishes for the time after Corona? 🗯🗯

Since the pandemic will remain amongst us for quite a while, I do not really think about it. Even with the vaccine we will have to live with it for a long time. So when is after Corona? Autumn 2021 or even somewhen in 2022?

I definitely wish that we all get off it unscathed and healthy. Regarding my actual job I wish that the culture and event industry gets finally the right respect and support from the government and that we will be able to continue somehow after Corona. At the moment it doesn’t look promising even though there’s plenty of money to help.

3 QUESTIONS to PAN-POT:

Q: Let's talk about your past and your mix. How did you get to know each other and later found each other musically? 

Tassilo: We both studied at the SAE in Berlin and got to know each other there. Due to the fact that we were both the only two people who liked Techno and House, the first connection was already done and successful anyway. At that time Thomas listened to a lot of Plastikman, Richie Hawtin and Robert Hood - the beginnings of Minimal Techno - and I came more from the Electro Clash / Gigolo corner. That was also our musical exchange, for which I am very grateful. We found our common passion pretty quickly after spending a lot of time in the studio, also with Marco Resmann. We developed our preference for reduced but also complicated beats in combination with sound effect structures. The time was awesome because we worked on individual track moments so long until the respective point in the track was perfect. That then changed to more linear production, which we still do today. The track selection for my mix includes important musical companions for me from around the age of 15. There were a lot of quieter things. 

Thomas: Back then I was listening to Hardcore (Thunderdome, Terrordrome) and Jungle. That was my electronic beginnings. My style was something between cheese and chop wood. The Techno mood came sometime later, when I was mobile and could go to Berlin to celebrate my first raves there. I've been falling into the whole thing pretty hard since then. 

Q: 2020 kicked us all out of our dreams. How did you deal with the shutdown of the entire industry and how did you use the time instead? 

Tassilo: I became a father in July 2020 and I am grateful that I was allowed to spend so much time with my wife and daughter. Otherwise it pretty much tore the ground under our feet. We had some financial saves, which we now have lost and we are quite disappointed with how little help there is for our industry. The question is also what we should learn from 2020. I'm not yet sure what the consensus will be here. Of course we used the newly gained time and worked on many new projects. 

Thomas: I was on a big trip in early 2020 and got stuck in New Zealand with my whole family (wife and two children). The lockdown came almost simultaneously all over the world. I found the time there very nice and I noticed which things are really important to me when work isn't there. Apart from the financial aspect, I don't think the Corona time is that bad. You get closer as a family and everything slows down. I kind of like that. This fast life as if in the fast lane no longer appeals to me. I'm curious how I will feel when it all starts again. 

Q: What are your plans for 2021? 

Tassilo: We are building a VR / XR show with which we can get back into social interaction with our crowd. And of course, we were in the studio a lot and produced a lot of music. But on this point we noticed how much we miss the feedback from the crowd and that unfortunately has a quite demotivating effect. We hope that from the beginning of 2021 something will return to normal and that we will be able to go out to the club pasture again. Furthermore, we are currently bringing Thomas' passion for gaming together with music and studio talk. But more on that later.

As DJs we took the Flow Session format as an opportunity to reminisce about musical styles that have been inspiring to us over the last 20 years and bring them together in a 03:33:33hr mix. We always enjoy long sets for the sake of greater variety. As it has been a difficult year, lacking the chance to perform, we took ten months of studio time and produced several new tracks that we would love to introduce to you now. Mostly as yet unpublished, may they guide you to a new year, hopefully a year full of hugging and loud music. - @kuriosenaturale

KURIOSE NATURALE started their journey together at Berlin’s legendary Bachstelzen Parties in 2006. Kristian and Jonathan had each been working on varying DJ-projects from the mid 90s on, when starting to establish an approach towards their own sound. Influenced by acid and deep techno of the early days...infused by diverse music genres… innovatively trying out for the new while cherishing the past…controversial…funky… groovingly seducing the senses…sometimes even disturbing our mind…on the dancefloors of Mother Earth… or from their studio on the grounds of Holzmarkt Berlin…their journey will go on forever…
