Space and time both play a role in pølaroit’s music. A felt connection to Jonas and Marius’ hometowns  in Northern Germany, their geography, as well as a  sense of pertaining to a specific instant in time, a  generation, are both expressed in the duo’s strain  of melodic deep house, “We see our music as a  snapshot of time and music,” they say. The chosen  name for the duo, pølaroit, is a reference to this  idea of capturing a moment and it tributes both  their northern roots (Polar) as well as the birthplace  of techno (Detroit).  

Jonas and Marius, both in their mid-twenties, grew  up near Hanover - yet it was only in 2018 that they  crossed paths for the first time. Prior to that, Jonas  had been developing his own work as a pianist,  influenced by neo-classical artists such as Nils  Frahm and Olafur Arnalds as well as scoring pieces  for film and advertisement. Marius on the other hand, who had been playing the drums since a  young boy, started his musical path at sixteen  deeply influenced by his interest in percussion and  the urban electronic music scene of the time. When  both met at a Christmas market in Hanover, after  one too many cups of glühwein, they set a studio  date just for fun. From that first day it became  immediately clear to both that Jonas’ melancholic piano melodies weaved themselves seamlessly to finish into otherwise hard-electro, “We love the imperfect, human touch and want to transport this feeling into electronic music,” says Jonas, “We recognised that everything gets faster and faster in our society, and that there is a certain perfectionism floating in our generation. That is not the way we see our music, we want to be more and more in the moment when creating,” adds Marius.  The EP’s track Underwater encompasses the desire for honesty by the use of a detuned piano, while the sound of waves that is heard throughout Cala calls forth a natural and earthly force. The title track, Pure features field recordings of a brick smashing against a wall – with it the veneer of perfection is also shattered. Their interest in “keeping things real" also informs the gear the duo chooses to work with - mainly analog synths and  tape machines - as well as, of course, their collaboration with singers Luna Morgenstern on Perfect Strangers and Margret on Underwater who add warmth and intimacy to tracks through their voices. Their quest for an authentic, unreproducible sound is also the reason why playing live is an important part of pølaroit’s act.  Through five incredibly catchy tracks, Pure is an EP which evokes nostalgia. The longing expressed through whimsical melodies and a full-bodied bass calls forth a time when things weren’t always polished or airbrushed. Such an approach has uncovered the magic at the heart of pølaroit’s music and what makes this enigmatic, astute duo so very special; their ability to create a mature and contemporary sound that retains purity.

An homage to my most beautiful trip…

Greece marked my life in a different way. 
While I visited this wonderful country as a child with my family, united at the time.... 

I discovered myself. I learned what it was like to immerse myself in a culture, to discover breathtaking places. I swam in the ocean, walked on lands with so much history and spent unforgettable moments with my family. 

I had the chance to go back, this time as a grown adult.  A completely different experience that convinced me that music had a big place in my life. 
I could vibrate to the sound of the sea in perfect cohesion with the violin. That's where I could understand why some people dedicated their lives to music. 

I also learned to listen to my body, to respect it.
To understand that sometimes life doesn't always go the way I want it to, but that the music and the land, this bond that unites us is stronger than anything.

Greece has inspired me on many levels and I hope you will understand why it has such a big place in my heart.

A mixture of energy and harmonies defines Aracil's personal sound, which rides between melancholic and euphoric and distinguishes himself with a very unique style of production, as he is always trying to push the boundaries forward in his sound, and tell a story with every song. His latest tracks have been released on the Berlin labels Einmusika Recordings, Katermukke and Dantze and the label run by Pablo Bolivar, Seven Villas Music.

Words from the artist: I was born into a musical family and my musical roots lie in soul. My father was a musician, the singer of renowned Spanish soul band from the 60's Los Dixies along with his six(!) siblings who were all musicians. My own musical journey started with DJing in London when I was 17, and over the last 15 years I have been a part of the music scene in Ibiza. I created this special mix overlooking the sunset and the rising moon at the beautiful Casa Maca. Although I love playing hard, as my DJing style ranges from pure deep house to melodic techno (with influences from Berlin), I also come from a downtempo background, so this mix was a special chance to revisit my roots for this Flow Session, and tell a slightly slower and soulful story. I hope you enjoy the journey!

Unsere Nr. 244 kommt heute von the doubljuh, welchen wir seit einer gefühlten Ewigkeit aufmerksam verfolgen. Neben seinem aktiven Auflegen, ist er auch Mitgründer des international bekannten Blogs https://soundcloud.com/deep_storys. 
Seine Sets bestechen durch eine enorme, hohe Qualität, welche sich durch die stringente Trackauswahl und dem geschichtartigen Aufbau auszeichnen. Stilistisch bringt er eigentlich in jedes seiner Sets eine Portion Sonnenschein hinein. So auch in unserer neusten Ausgabe von Afterhour Sounds. 
Dennoch überraschte uns die Aufnahme komplett, denn das Set ist gespickt mit alten Klassikern aus so ziemlich jedem Genre, was Musik zu bieten hat. Musik die nicht nur ein Schmunzeln aufs Gesicht zaubert, sondern auch zum Mitsummen und je nach Textkenntnis, auch zum Mitsingen einlädt. Hier und da schleicht sich aber auch ein elektronischer Track hinein. So ganz konnte er es dann doch nicht lassen. 

Im Gesamten ist der Mix absolut einzigartig und zeitlos geworden. Er funktioniert definitiv jederzeit und über alle Generationen hinweg. 

Wie es zu diesem außergewöhnlichen Mix gekommen ist und was für ihn eine gute Afterhour ausmacht, verrät er uns unter anderem in unserem Kurzinterview.

- Wie bist du zur elektronischen Musik gekommen?

Ich bin dank meines großen Bruders früh mit House Music in Kontakt gekommen. Bei uns auf dem Land in Sachsen Anhalt gab es damals eine sehr aktive Szene und viele Jugendliche aus unserem Dorf haben sehr früh angefangen aufzulegen. So habe ich auch mit 14 meine ersten Plattenspieler bekommen und vor allem Disco House, Vocal House und French House aufgelegt. Meine großen Vorbilder waren damals Armand Van Helden, Bad Boy Bill, Fat Boy Slim und natürlich einige regionale Djs wie z.B. Manuel Beat.

 
- Was macht für dich eine gute Afterhour aus?

Zu einer guten Afterhour gehören für mich die richtigen Leute. Eine bunte offene Truppe mit der man Schabernack treiben kann!

-	Welche Überlegungen hattest du beim Erstellen des Podcasts?

 Ich habe mich sehr gefreut mit diesem Set zu meinen Wurzeln zurückkehren zu können. Viele von den Tracks lagen schon länger auf meiner Festplatte und ich wollte sie unbedingt mal in einem Set spielen, bisher hatte es aber nie gepasst. Zudem bin ich auch sehr froh, dass ich einen bisher unveröffentlichten Song von meinen guten Freund Shahin einbauen zu können (Shahin – Sunny Beam ab 26Min.).

Dort steigst du aus deiner Energiekugel aus und lässt dich in unendlicher bedingungsloser Liebe tragen, verbunden mit allem was ist, und deinem höheren selbst.
