Reading Frances Shelley's biographical story, you can't help but feel inspired. Now, in her early 70s, this neo-classical pianist's and composer's roots go back to being a rebel and a romantic from a very young age. "I can tell many tales from my days as a wild child in 60s London; from working with David and Angie Bowie in the early 70s, the 10 years I spent travelling the world as a fashion model followed by a life-changing stint in rehab in 1981 (before it became fashionable!)” she jokes. “To being a single mother and starting a successful event business in my home.” A decade ago, Shelley decided to pursue her passion for music, and now, multiple years and self-released albums later, she's been signed to Manners McDade, the composer agency and publishing house for Nils Frahm, Caitlyn Aurelia Smith, Poppy Ackroyd. Shelley captures the stories of her eventful life through beautifully layered keys, gently orchestrated arrangements, and carefully measured dose of electronic post-processing, to create atmospheres that swoop in with warm winds of her sonic valley and raise your spirits to fantastic heights. The eleven pieces on her upcoming album, Songs Of Possibility, are also influenced by the events of the last year, "travelling through realms of regret, grief and loss, towards optimism and a sense of excitement for living." In these unprecedented times, we've all found a moment to ask ourselves of 'what it is,' and more importantly of 'what can be'. In this reflection, we'll find a new way to begin. In Shelley's case, it is a dream of music.

From the new Icelandic label that brought us Atli Örvarsson, Sin Fang, Christopher Royal King & Nico Rosenberg, comes a new composer, hailing from Naarm (Melbourne). As a professional concert pianist, Rose Riebl has captived the audience from around the world with her performances which include her own compositions. Her musical work "extends her intimate relationship with the piano into a realm of more fragile, soulful and transcendent works that guide the listener into vulnerable emotional spaces," and when you play through the previously released two singles, you'll know that these words ring true. Now that she's been signed to INNI, Riebl is preparing for her debut album of compositions, titled Do Not Move Stones, due out on June 18th. Meanwhile, I am here today to tease you with a beautiful piece borrowed from her album, titled "Even As The Light Fades". Here, the sparkling piano keys, weaving in the plush bed of organic reverb, carry and lift the soaring strings into a poignant dance, that is at once a little melancholic and triumphant in its song. Echoes of romantic classical composers, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, return in ghostly melodies that pluck at the emotions in your heart, recalling false memories of the past lives, when sitting in a concert hall was enough to be transformed with only music.

“I think sometimes people forget to feel, or it’s easier not to,” she told classical and new music magazine CutCommon. “So, I like my music to elicit some kind of emotional response. Sometimes, that’s just rest or calm; other times, it’s more intense – there’s fury, rage, longing. We all walk around carrying these things, and if music can act as a bridge back to feeling, allowing us to access those dormant parts of our own little universes, then it’s doing what it’s meant to. I think art wants to wake people up.”

'Settlers' is the new album from Western Skies Motel in a limited edition of 170 gatefold 180gram vinyl, CD and digital formats.  'Settlers' was mastered for vinyl and digital by Taylor Deupree, with master lacquers cut by Roger Siebel at SAE.  The first 50 Vinyl & CD's ordered come with a bonus EP, 'Generations' mastered by Kirk Marrison of Kiln.

In the dry desert of Arizona that Lost Tribe Sound calls home, a letter is received from guitarist René Gonzàlez Schelbeck who’s eager to share a collection of intimately composed songs, titled 'Settlers'. Upon listening, we are immediately enthralled. There’s a timeworn, arid, and almost badlands quality to Schelbeck’s hypnotic, cyclical guitar style. It seems to perfectly capture the lonely, barren landscape of the American West. 

Yet, there are curious dynamics at play here as Schelbeck, who makes music under the alias Western Skies Motel, is from Denmark and far removed from any upbringing in the rough-hewn Americana style of folk guitar. Conceivably, his music has more in common with the lonesome, calculated tone of Berlin's modern classical scene or the rainy day folk of the UK. Those are intriguing parallels, since the collective mood of Western Skies Motel's music would adapt so well to either environment. 

Words hardly do justice to the rich, immersive experience of 'Settlers'; yet a few may help to set the stage. Schelbeck is a remarkably well rounded instrumentalist, who spent his early days losing his hearing in local punk rock bands. This youthful love for walls of sound and discordant guitar squalls survives in his modern sound palette. However, a more mature approach to these techniques brings moments of palpable tension, adding in uneasy waves of guitar feedback and droning harmonium. 

But ultimately, the truth of what Schelbeck hopes to convey through his music may rest rmly in his subconscious. In hindsight, 'Settlers' is about moving between worlds: not in the dimensional sense, but more as a constant change in form. Each influence and sound Schelbeck incorporates into his music feels native to the delicate ecosystem of these songs and each turn feels as organic and nuanced as that of the natural world. Just as a tree’s leaves wither and fall; a fire sparks and expands only to expend its last bit of fuel, extinguished and left for ash. So true are the parallels we find in our own existence, the complex ritual of growing old and returning to dirt. Decay is inevitable for all life, yet through this it becomes the rich soil for all things proceeding. Western Skies Motel's weighty instrumental mantras may root in this and other meanings yet to be culled. One thing is clear, this music contains signicant power, and, regardless of our conceived themes or geographic locations, it tells a story that is lasting and instantly familiar. 

'Settlers' sees a 180-gram heavy weight gatefold release very similar to the recent Mute Forest debut, 'Deforestation'. The acetate and test pressings were scrutinized for anomalies on world-class vinyl setups at Arizona’s esteemed audio dealer, Arizona Hi-Fi.

Western Skies Motel is building upon a busy year in 2015, having released two very different full-length albums 'Prism' (Preserved Sound) and 'Buried and Resurrected' (Twice Removed).

Christopher Colaço and Philipp Schaeper have known each other since moving from their Southern German hometowns to Berlin. Together they studied Jazz piano/drums at the Berlin University of Arts and immediately dived into the vibrant Jazz scene.

Playing and working together shaped their musical common sense. In 2013 Christopher and Philipp had the opportunity to score their first movie (Oh Boy! – A Coffee in Berlin) and formed an old school sounding Jazz band with friends. After winning the German Academy Award for best original score, they continued to develop their collaborative project as a duo writing and scoring music.

At the same time they are working on their own music and started collaborating with classical musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in 2018, which lead to their first debut album. The record 'View From Above' consists of 7 tracks, creating atmospheric soundscapes that mingle between film-music, classical minimalism, ambient and electronic music.

'View From Above' provides a portrait of Christopher and Philipp's journey over the past few years and was recorded in Berlin at Bonello Studios. The renown mixing artist Francesco Donadello gave the record its final touch and it will be released on May 10th worldwide.
