South African Jason van Wyk is quickly becoming a favourite and prominent artist on these pages. You may even think I’m biased, because I asked Jason to rework one of my tracks. But this relationship is indeed in reverse – I only requested his participation because I admire his sound, and am indeed inspired by his music when I choose to work on my own. There’s something ethereal, delicate, and dreamlike in how his cinematic pads swirl in a cocktail spatial ambience and pulsating rhythm that takes over my heart and bewitches my soul. Stunning harmonic progressions show off true musicianship, while the layered textures keep me occupied with intelligent sound design. This is the culmination of elements that I highly respect in my music. This is why I keep listening to Jason’s music and try to share it with the world. This is why, I’m sure, Mike Cadoo continues to invite him on his label. We last heard from Jason nearly three years ago [time is always speeding up], when in October of 2022, he released Descendants, which inevitably landed on my Best of the Year list in the most coveted category, Music For The Film Behind Closed Eyelids. This is a sacred space, often occupied by the likes of Max Richter, Ólafur Arnalds, and, of course, Jóhann Jóhannsson. I took these photos at a big second hand/junk market in Camberwell, Melbourne.

The photos were taken on the ubiquitous iphone, using the hipstamatic app. Bit wanky that, using a (now superseded) phone to replicate analogue photography...but all the cool kids are doing it and it somehow links into what I consider the themes are of this small photo collection and track.

The photos are, I suppose, reflective of a number of overlapping interests that I think are shared by many visitors to fluid...music creation and consumption, technological and cultural obsolescence, and the handmade aesthetic.

The track uses an old piano loop I made, feeds it through a couple of effects, then blurs the sound until it becomes a drone that underpins a different progression made out of chopped and changed sounds from the new scissors and sellotape release. It's sort of recycling I suppose...

I sort of want to babble on about themes of recursion, reminiscence, and aging technologies but the slightly less pretentious bit of me is winning the battle this morning....so I'll let you make your own links.

hello sweet friends out there. i got a little nostalgic and listened to the tapes from my portable tape recorder. i record my ideas on there and everything i like to remember when i am traveling. i found my first scratch tracks from the song "familiar" from my album "felt". i had to laugh so hard when i listened to it...enjoy!
