This is 1 of a 2 part episode expoloring new angles of the 9/11 attacks using a visual interactive map of Florida. Robbie first starts by answering listener questions he didn't get a chance to answer on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Later he explores the bizarre CIA and intel connections to 3 of the flight schools attended by the hijackers and the strange coincidece and multiple mis-reports(?) about some of the 9/11 hijackers recording a violent extremist rap record in Sarosota, Florida not long before the attacks themselves. In part 2 Robbie takes a deep dive into the eerie Florida connections between the 9/11 hijackers, the so-called 'Israeli art students' and the Amerithrax attacks, guiding the viewers through a tour of the geopgraphy using the interactive map.

Israel's Shocking History of Murdering Activists & Journalists

Titled after a Bridget Riley painting of the same name, Gala exists in a meta tuning system: a G harmonic series, 5-tet, 21-tet and 34-tet are all stacked on top of each other.  As before I carefully select by ear only a small number of pitches and create a new meta scale from these notes.  The result is 34 notes to work with.  

Performed by Elise Mac on Norwegian Hardingfele, Violin and André van Rensburg on Shakuhachi (2016).

The 34 note meta scale presents me with somewhat subtle dissonances, which I actually prefer to call vibrations with varying intensities. I have no intention to resolve them into anything but themselves.  

The approach to form is strongly inspired by James Tenney. Through simple macro gestures, the microtonal world can open up, breath and reveal itself in vertical directions.  When you think of a sunset for example, you think of a very simple and continuous motion:  colors shift and change, intensity changes, but everything else is still.  The sky doesn’t move.  This music is similar. 

I have also become more aware of the effectiveness in leaving certain parameters open to performers.  Again, another Tenney score, Clang is a great example.  It comes with the following instructions:

 'The notation indicates available pitches to be played by sustained-tone instruments (including rolls on the percussion instruments) in the following way: each player chooses, at random, one after another of these available pitches (when within the range of his or her instrument), and plays it beginning very softly (almost inaudibly), gradually increasing the intensity to the dynamic level indicated for that section, then gradually decreasing the intensity again to inaudibility ... After a pause at least as long as the previous tone, each player then repeats this process ...  ' (Wannamaker, North American Spectralism: The Music of James Tenney).

Sifting Through Anti-China Disinformation w/ Ian Goodrum

"May All Your Children Be Acrobats," by David A. Jaffe is scored for eight guitars, mezzo-soprano and computer-generated tape. Composed in 1981 for David Starobin and the SUNY Purchase Guitar Ensemble, the piece is a celebration of folk wisdom, as well as folly.  It is based on a text excerpted from "The People, Yes" by Carl Sandburg and consists entirely of proverbs, sayings and anecdotes from the rich and varied backgrounds of immigrants, natives, fools and other Americans. Complementing this text is a heterogeneous music that draws on such styles as bluegrass, Irish, Jewish and African-American music, as well as American popular and European classical styles. 

The computer part was created at the Stanford University Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics. It is entirely synthesized, yet often resembles voices and plucked strings, using techniques pioneered by the composer and others at Stanford University. These techniques, known as "waveguide physical modeling" have recently been adopted by the synthesizer industry and are considered an advance over more familiar techniques due to the enhanced degree of expression. This work is the first musical composition to use this form of synthesis. It was followed a year later by the composer's more well-known "Silicon Valley Breakdown."
