Tango, originating from the streets of 18th century Buenos Aires in Argentina and Montevideo in Uruguay, is known as being one of the more difficult dances to learn. The timing can be hard to master. What makes tango unique as a dance form is its embrace and use of improvisation.

14 Oct 2018 Musical Meditation: Verkkan Kuin Illan Sammuvi Rusko is one of the most beautiful songs in the popular choir repertoire, often favored by male choirs. Written by a lawyer R. F. v Willebrandt from my home town Jyväskylä in Finland, the song has longing, melancholic flavor reflecting the words (trans. by Barbara Helsingius) "Slowly like evening loses its purple, far above water of glimmering gold. Softly like winds will die in the distance somewhere beyond all that eyes can behold."

Not having access to a choir, I sang the harmony parts and then mixed to simulate a choir, (meh, good enough for the girls we go out with ; ), added 3 layers of flutes, 3 layers of guitars, 2 layers of bass, etc. all together 15 tracks. The popular Irish singer Enya apparently uses 80-100 tracks in her songs to get that solid but so soft sound. Managing 15 tracks was plenty for a Sunday afternoon, fer shure.

Tuoll' On Mun Kultani is a melacholic love song from Finland 

The Story ... Traditional Finnish folk song, Tuoll On Mun Kultani (There Goes My Sweetheart) talks of the longing heart for the true love that may never come. She walks the ground of the king (hence may be inaccessible to the, we assume, to a man of lesser stature. There is trust, and fantasized? reciprocal love nevertheless (love is not unrequited). Whilst there (in the King's Court) are many lasses and handsome men, my sweetheart's eyes will never gaze upon them.

Masterful lyrics by Mirjami Lähteenkorva who narrates a poem of a 4-year old boy coming to church with his dad and sitting in a pew in front of the narrator. At first, the little boy is amazed by all to see, the paintings, the chandeliers ... but soon enough he gets bored by the sermon and wants to go home. The narrator, in an allegorical reflective moment, feels the same tiredness about life ... and, like the little boy, wants to go home to heaven.

Melody by Pastor-musician-composer Tapani Nuutinen (b. 1953), a well-known Finnish composer of gospel music (Golden Gospel winner 2007) with a doctorate in theology. He has composed over 300 songs and this song is probably the best-known and, perhaps, the most-cherished. 

Melody: Pastori-muusikko Tapani Nuutinen, Tapani Nuutinen (s. 29. marraskuuta 1953 Eno) on suomalainen teologian tohtori, pappi ja muusikko. Nuutinen on tunnettu erityisesti gospel-musiikin tekijänä. Hän on säveltänyt yli kolmesataa laulua, joista tunnetuin on ripariveisu Tuli kirkkoon mies ja lapsi. Nuutinen voitti vuonna 2007 Golden Gospel -palkinnon tunnustuksena ansiokkaasta muusikon urasta.

517 Herra, kädelläsi

Tämä Anna-Mari Kaskisen virsi lähtee samasta "Herran kämmenellä" -teemasta kuin Pirkko Halosen virsi 499 ”Jumalan kämmenellä”. Kyseessä on varhaisin Anna-Mari Kaskisen teksti, josta tuli yhteislaulu. Siinä oli aluksi kolme säkeistöä, neljäs säkeistö syntyi halusta sisällyttää tekstiin ihmisen koko elämänkaari. Se säkeistö laulettiin ensimmäisen kerran Anna-Mari Kaskisen silloisen vuokraemännän Lempi Hellaakosken – runoilija Aaro Hellaakosken lesken – hautajaisissa kesällä 1984.

Laulun syntyaikoina Pekka Simojoen ja Anna-Mari Kaskisen yhteistyö oli alkamassa. Kun Simojoki kerran esitteli säveltämäänsä uutta melodiaa Anna-Mari Kaskiselle, tämä otti esille juuri sepittämänsä runon. He yllättyivät huomatessaan, että ne sopivat yhteen. Pekka Simojoen ehdotuksesta laulun kertosäkeeksi tuli psalminjae ”Minun onneni on olla Jumalaa lähellä” (Ps. 73:28). Kun kumppanukset sitten suunnittelivat Afrikkalaista gospelmessua Kotkassa 1981 vietetyn Suomen Lähetysseuran vuosijuhlan nuorisojumalanpalvelukseksi, laulusta Herra, kädelläsi tuli messun saarnalaulu.

Anna-Mari Kaskisen (1958-) ja Pekka Simojoen (1958-) yhteistyö on jatkunut hedelmällisenä. Sen tuloksiin kuuluu muun muassa musikaaleja sekä lasten- ja nuortenmessuja. Virsikirjassa Anna-Mari Kaskisen virsiä on seitsemän; niistä viisi on säveltänyt Pekka Simojoki.

Music is the astounding, confounding, awe-inspiring, sometimes perplexing world of emotional soundscaping where every composer gets the same chromatic scale of 12 notes and arranges them in pleasant sequences and clusters along a timeline to convey emotions. And it’s stunning what musical storytellers like Vivaldi vs Stravinsky vs Lennon vs Los Incas vs Marley convey with exactly the same palette of 12 notes. Nourishing gifts to our brains ... as fMRI shows, the brain of a musician lights up and makes new connections like nobody's business. And Friedrich was bang on when he said ...

I had the good fortune to grow up in a very musical family, and cousins who are film composers ... car rides were filled with singing in three-part harmony ... and music ... with all kinds of instruments, duets, and especially choir singing, has been a huge part of growing up. 

At present, I am a composer, multi-instrumentalist, choir singer, and 'producer-in-learning' based in Toronto Canada with an interest in symphonic and cinematic composing for my own Micromovies (see my YouTube channel: bit.ly/2yyCwgw). Many simpler arrangements for flute, guitar, bass, and strings are on this site. I also have leaky-brain chromesthesia, a form of involuntary sound-to-color synesthesia ... I "see" music as colors, patterns and shapes.
