Midnight Magic’s perennial disco anthem “Beam Me Up” announced itself as an instant classic from the moment of its release in 2010, and at long last the fellow Brooklynites joined us for a 10-year-anniversary package (minus one lost year) that once again establishes the timeless quality of the song with a fresh and versatile package of new remixes.

Norwegian space-disco don Prins Thomas delivers a sprawling and elegant mix, grounding melodic and psychedelic elements over a bumping percussive disco rhythm treatment, stretching out over 8 minutes of blissful breakdowns, delays and driving bass lines. Kim Ann Foxman takes the song to a darker and dubbier place with her “Beam Me To The Basement Mix,” layering samples of singer Tiffany Roth’s vocal and insistent acid synths over a heavy and pulsing low end. Each Other, a new project by Max Pask and NYC club royalty Justin Strauss, crafts an extended peak-time stormer of a mix, with churning analog drum and synth production that is somehow ravey, New-Wavey and lush all at once.

Our next voyage is into the vaults of Rahaan. The American has been building up his vast and varied collection of disco and electro and plenty of retro gold in between ever since the 80s. Starting out on his local and competitive scene in Chicago (play tapes, no less) Rahaan’s skills soon stood him out from the crowd and before long he began touring the world. Nowadays he is also a producer of some exceptional edits and originals for labels like Fourplay and remains one of the most unique DJs around. 

As you would expect from Rahaan, the podcast he serves up is full of joyous delights, disco bombs and classic vocal tracks all mixed together with a knowing hand. There are bumpy beats and serene strings, diva coos and atmospheric samples and never does your booty stop shaking throughout the 70 odd minute selection. So, stick it on and scare away those Monday blues in an instant, because this is a real heart warmer from Rahaan.

Fresh from the Outplay crew comes 24 Carrot; a series of edits, weirder bits and ruff house cuts that don’t necessarily  fit the brief for a regular Outplay EP. Fouk and Junktion are first out of the blocks with three no nonsense party jams; each track given it’s own dance floor theme. We spotlight ‘“That’s Pretty Vague”, with it’s swinging, organic drums and infectious rolling bassline it’s reminiscent of that 90’s golden period of New York tough garage, not unlike Mood II Swing in their prime. A little bit about the release:

Gourmandisque launches its first release « GMD 001 » composed by Doublure co-founder of the collective. Released date will be the 8th of May 2020.

With these 4 impetuous tracks, the EP revisits the universe of italo disco and dance music of the 80’s and 90’s, wavering between mythical synth sounds and powerful basslines.

1. Jerky Steps (Original Mix):
Oscillating between deep house and italo disco, Jerky Steps is made up of guitar riffs punctuated by bridges of aerial solos as well as synths arpeggios. Its composition mixes a dynamic acid bass with lustrous vocals, offering a techno and ascensional resonance.

2. Distorded Wheel (Original Mix):
At the border between italo disco and indie dance, Distorded Wheel is characterized by a recurring and dynamic rhythm. Its sharp synths and its circular melody recalls the motricity of a groove born from multiple frenetic percussions.

3. Vertical Way (Original Mix):
By mixing italo disco and new wave, Vertical Way is a breath of fresh air that lifts us towards the heavens by aerial and scintillating pads as well as a soft and progressive melody. Its synths overlays and graded basses produce a contemporary and harmonious dynamic.

4. Immersive Bush (Original Mix):
Between deep house and tech house, Immersive Bush is an immediate dive in a wild and breathless atmosphere. Its punchy and modular bass offers an intense immersion in the mysterious world of the living.
