“Chango (the deity of justice, thunder and lightning) and his brother Ogún (the deity of metal and war) were fighting. Obatala (deity of peace, purity and honesty) was sad about this news, so he invited Chango over to talk about it. “No matter how right you are to be annoyed with your twin,” Obatala told Chango, “your uncontrolled anger can be destructive.” Obatala took off his white beaded necklace and removed one of the beads to give to Chango as a gift. “Wear this white bead as a symbol of peace and wisdom alongside your red beads.” He told Chango that from this moment on his virtue would be justice not revenge. Since then, Chango wore a necklace of red and white and has been just.” - Afro-Cuban Patakí

Created over the period of 4 years, beginning from studio sessions in Amsterdam where the duo co-worked together building ideas and creating their artistic language, to an international transfer of material and ideas between Los Angeles and the Dutch cultural epicentre. Marquez and Wampa connected on the idea of bringing to life folkloric material from the Orisha traditions fused with the music of sound-system culture.

Reminiscent of the sprawling bass and crystal percussion sounds of Loefah and Om Unit, the record takes an other-worldy character, powerful and resonant. Each track an ode, a prayer to the Orisha, seeped in driving percussive rhythms and “marauding bass lines” held together by Marquez’s rich captivating vocals. Influences of Afro-Cuban pioneers, Okonkolo, and UK production wizard Jamie XX twist the music together in a contortion of pulsing drums. “The goal was to find a sense of spirituality in the music and keep the core identity of the texts and Bata drums at the forefront. Once the core tracks were finished, it became clear that the record itself should be a ritualistic experience, so we decided to frame the record with an Opening and Closing Prayer, setting the environment for the ceremony.” - Guy Wood 2025
