The London-via-Bilbao DJ marks 15 years of Cartulis with two hours of punchy techno and electro, recorded live at FOLD.

When you think of London label and party Cartulis, dark, muscular electro and tough tech house spring to mind. But the name is more revealing than it first appears: in founder Unai Trotti's native Bilbao dialect, cartulis translates to "nerd." Like any labour of love, the project is driven by a deep, obsessive dedication, centred around sound, mood and community. 

Recorded at Cartulis' 15th anniversary party this autumn, RA.1017 captures why Trotti is such a compelling DJ. Playing only vinyl, he has a deft ability to balance functional club pressure with more leftfield selections, and as he outlines in his Q&A below, it comes from a belief in creative limitation, committing to a finite set of records and trusting instinct over abundance. 

Across the two hours, there are plenty of big, physical tracks built for the dance floor, but also some genuinely strange, confrontational stretches. Around the 15-minute mark, church bells ring out as a gothic female vocal looms overhead—David Lynch, if he needed an electro soundtrack. It's the kind of material you only hear at parties where dancers feel truly at ease, unafraid of the weird. That's Cartulis.

Malzof at Chillits 2025

Recorded live from within Black Oak(or khotishohol) Ranch in Mendocino County, California - in the historic land of the Northern Pomo, Coastal Pomo/Miwok, Cahto, and Yuki Peoples from 4:10 AM - 5:40 AM PST on Sept 13, 2025 - right after Neonlichter and before Kiernan Laveaux.

Coincidentally this slot time would coincide with 1-year since my dad’s funeral of September 13, 2024. After his passing, I would recover all of the records from his and my mom’s joint collection. Filled with folk music, pretty guitar and instrumentals, classical and comedic sketches, and more. 

To my joyful surprise, one of the records I would encounter in the collection, is one I recognized from my own collection of records: Environments Disc 1: The Psychologically Ultimate Seashore / Optimum Aviary, one of the pinnacle records of the Environments field recordings series. This one presents ocean sounds from Brighton Beach, Coney Island and birds from the Bronx Zoo. Before I left for Chillits, I tossed this record in my tote. I didn’t want to travel with too many records for this trip, but I knew this one had to make the cut.

Sam Barker's influence on contemporary electronic music culture spans many levels—not only as a producer and DJ pushing against traditional genre boundaries, but also as key figure behind the scenes as head of the label Leisure System. He came into RA HQ to talk about the central thesis in his current work: exploring organic, human timing in a genre that has become increasingly obsessed with mechanized grids. 

The Berlin-based artist tells us about how he puts this theory into practice in his standout album of the year, Stochastic Drift, and his recent collaborative project with saxophonist Bendik Giske. Beyond the technical, he also reflects on the evolution of the Berlin scene, the surprising arguments for liberation in the streaming economy and the role of art in imagining a utopian future. This mix is a selection of this year’s releases I put out on mappa. I wove into it a few field recordings I made myself, or together with my partner Michaela. I wanted to speak about a phenomenon that has fascinated me for a long time, and that is becoming more and more present in my life. It’s the way in which the releases I listen to over and over shape my emotional world, and shift the way I hear and perceive the world I move through. How, in certain tracks, I suddenly catch a glimpse of places I know, memories, scents, joys, or forgotten fears.

How the swamp behind my hometown feels different now—ever since I heard Adela Mede’s howling, which sits so close to the local frog choir. The boundaries blur completely, and sometimes I can’t tell what’s just an echo from some album, what’s a real memory of a creek in northern Romania, what’s the bubbling of volcanic mud on one of the Aeolian islands, and what’s the delicate crunchy electronics of Olli Aarni.

And the voices I hear when I wake from a dream at night—are they my neighbors, or have I heard them already in the worlds of Julek ploski, Plume Girl, Richard Hronský or Areliz Ramos? After ten years, I realized this is the driving force behind all this solitary work: this quiet sound-overflow that connects worlds so different from each other, forming unexpected little constellations of meaning.

1. This mix is aurally centered around Olivier Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur l'enfant Jesus.  Messiaen expresses Christian spirituality in a way that I find appealing; it's often foreboding, bottom heavy and light on top.  The excerpt from Vingt Regards that I included is one of the lighter parts, I kind of wish I had included one of the darker movements too. 
The part of of Vingt Regards that is actually titled "Noel" (that would be Christmas en francais) is pretty sinister sounding. I'd encourage you to listen to the whole thing if you haven't before, especially if you have to deal with any kind of traditional european Christmas.  


2. Of the composers on this mix, Pierre Boulez and Gerard Grisey both studied under Olivier Messiaen; Horatiu Radulescu chilled with him in Paris for a bit too AND your's truly is a 2nd generation student of Messiaen by way of 4 lessons under some guy in Paris whose name I don't remember; I was too busy faking how much French I could understand to learn much. Xenakis studied with Messiaen a tiny bit too maybe according to Wikipedia - there's a funny Xenakis piece for trombone and tenor where the guy is just kind of wailing along making trombone sounds. I almost put it on here, but in the end........I forgot to.  


3. Much of the music presented here is crudely excerpted from pieces that are quite long and their length is structurally extremely relevant.  OOOOPS! :}~~ hahahahaha 


4. I listen to this mix through a small boombox in the kitchen, so I left the tape hiss on for myself.  Feel free to remove it, free country.
