Peder Mannerfelt splits the difference between playful immediacy and daring experimentation. You’re as likely to find him premiering a live show at Berlin’s Atonal festival as pulling apart fabled techno meccas from Berghain to Fabric with synapse-frying precision. One minute he’s being asked to remix Björk, and the next he’s dropping EPs of non-conformist techno for Karenn’s Voam label.

As a prolific collaborator throughout his career, Mannerfelt has veered from the orchestral tension of Roll The Dice (with Malcolm Pardon) to the anything-goes maximalism of Aasthma (with Pär Grindvik). As a producer, he’s worked on every one of Fever Ray’s acclaimed albums and live shows, as well as projects from alt music heavyweights such as Smerz, Blonde Redhead and Glasser. His Peder Mannerfelt Produktions label has become another outlet for his singular approach, presenting his work alongside similarly experimental operators like Sissel Wincent, Machine Woman, Klara Lewis and Hodge.

More recently, his PM+ series celebrates the immediacy of club-focused tracks, and Mannerfelt thrives on the energy and community of contemporary club music. What makes him different is his response to that energy, as he pushes the music’s possibilities in wild, unpredictable directions.

JakoJako (@jakojako_live) always wanted to make music and her self-confessed hyperactivity ultimately led to her getting the most joy out of playing about with machines and patching up synths. These days the Berghain resident is a celebrated live act and DJ who draws on the considerable knowledge she picked up working at Berlin's legendary synth shop SchneidersLaden, but she has also worked on several high-profile motion sensor dance projects at places like The Royal Albert Hall. Her smart sound designs and unique rhythms have landed on Leisure System, Tresor and Figure and she has a new EP coming on Mute this June.

Her mix for us this week features a sneak preview of one of the tracks from that EP as well as mixing up music from Alaric, Siege, Altinbas and many more. It's full of high-speed sounds couched loosely in techno but with moods and textures borrowed from industrial, minimal and even trance as things reach an emotional peak late on. Though she broke through as a live act, this set shows JakoJako can now speak just as freely through the decks.

Born in Algeria, and raised between France and the Netherlands, with a later stint in London, Mary Lake has lived a life through the lens of different cultures, each adding a little more to her experience in the realm of electronic music. It wasn’t always her medium, but in DJing she’s found her most authentic voice, with her start at more intimate house parties, then on to the best and brightest of Dutch clubs and festivals. For her, creative discovery and expanding the limits of craft is key, covering both the range of utilitarian techno and more atypical sounds, the likes of which she was apt to share via her experimental pandemic-era radio show Worshipping Discordia. Alongside that, and a slew of catchy releases, she’s now a Spielraum resident and frequently billed on stages from Dekmantel to De School to Tresor, Bassiani and beyond. Her percussive techno spreads the kind of wildly infectious crowd energy that drew a younger her towards it many moons ago, now she's on the inside looking out. Taking us on a voyage for this week’s Crack mix is none other than Georgian-born artist, DJ and producer Salome. Hailing from Tsibli but now finding home in Berlin, over the past few years she has cemented herself as a major player in the world of electro music. 

As a resident of esteemed queer collective Herrensauna, Salome likes to play fast and hard. Her sets are known to take you on a trance with her own distinctive blend of electro, acid and techno.

Juana is a DJ and producer hailing from the city of Chicago and has been DJing house, techno, and disco parties since roughly 2001. Juana started obsessively collecting disco and early house records in the late 90s and eventually developed an undying penchant for proper techno and darker shades of Chicago underground acid and deep house of the 80s and 90s. Juana moved to DC in 2003 and began hosting weekly live internet radio shows and playing parties in the deep house scene. Over the past several years, Juana has made her mark as primarily a techno DJ, making regular appearances at BASEMENT in New York as well as Berghain. She is a founding member of the DC QT BIPOC collective NOXEEMA JACKSON. As a producer, she has released music independently, and on the Bound label, TRAX ONLY, World Building, and Perimeter Junk.
