It's time to take a journey through West Africa via New York with one of the most exciting underground producers of the moment. French born musical explorer Débruit first caught our attention with his infectious 2009 tune, Nigeria What? His new album, Outside The Line, transcends West African music and Afrobeat rhythms through the synth work of 80s New York, and it really is something special. His evolutionary sound perfectly captures musical eras gone by, while making a unique and futuristic sound seem effortless. For all these reasons and more, we are delighted to welcome him to the i-D mix family with this incredible sonic journey. I took the opportunity to showcase my vision of a house mix that goes on a one hour journey through a myriad of styles. This mix draws from many musical influences and moods from around the world with an emphasis on movement! Dancing your journey is the intent here with bass heavy chuggers, latin inspired cuts, soulful vibes, deep jackers, Afro heat, cheeky disco nods, a touch of acid and a few of house music’s (many) important productions. The mix moves along, never usually playing one track too long by itself, weaving a dance floor odyssey that never feels rushed allowing the segments of each selection to naturally form a cohesive, timeless whole.

Ata Kak's first new song in over 30 years!

Ata Kak created a peculiar slice of Ghanaian music history with his debut album “Obaa Sima”. While it barely made a ripple at the time of its release in 1994, the cassette found a new life online in 2006. A not-so-underground cult obsession grew after it appeared on  the blog Awesome Tapes From Africa as its very first post, a sort of manifesto for the project. His addictive amalgam of left-field electronic music and Twi-language hiplife reached surprising levels of awareness among music fans of many stripes. The mystery behind the musician’s identity grew. Eventually Yaw Atta-Owusu came out of the shadows, from his quiet home in Kumasi, to tour the world playing high-energy, sweat-soaked performances at major festivals like Glastonbury, Sónar and Pop Montreal. 

Now, for the first time since 1994, Ata Kak releases new music. Honed in studios around Kumasi over the last several years, the songs feature the rapper-singer’s acrobatic rap, signature scatting, dramatic drums and even traditional Akan harp. The compositions are more ambitious than his earlier work, with more complex arrangements and layered harmonies. Ata Kak’s new songs are also the natural expression of a restless artist—he is a prolific poet and author of a half-dozen books, as well as an active gardener and busy painter. 

Born in Ghana in 1960, Ata Kak wasn’t always involved in music. But his travels and openness to the world lead him into the music industry. While living in Germany, he was invited to play drums in a reggae band and subsequently played in highlife bands in Ontario after moving to the Toronto area. He recorded “Obaa Sima” there at his home studio and released it in Ghana in 1994. He didn’t participate in music much in the intervening years until “Obaa Sima” was reissued in 2015. He started performing his song live with the help of a brilliant cast of London-based musicians and has toured three continents and played to thousands of fans in venues of all kinds.

This set was created with those moments in mind when you just want to unwind a bit during the day, or at the start of the evening after work — while cooking dinner or enjoying a drink to open your appetite.

Chilling doesn’t mean falling asleep — the grooves are uplifting, but they carry a certain lightness, like someone who woke up early to watch the sunrise. There’s a touch of disco, soul, funk, and of course, a bit of Brazilian music to spice things up.

As the night dissolved into the first light of day, the dancefloor became a sanctuary of release. This set was recorded live during the Sunday sunrise session at Groovewell Vacation - a moment suspended between the intensity of the night and the quiet arrival of morning.

Deactivation through music is my practice of softening. It’s the art of guiding energy down gently, so the body can rest, the heart can open, and the mind can return to stillness. it's creating a space where movement turns inward, where rhythm becomes breath, and where sound holds us as we land.

May this recording bring you the same tenderness it carried that morning - a reminder that every ending is also a beginning, and that through music, we can always return to ourselves.
