Oh, December! 🎄Time for fireside chillin' with friends and fam, with a glass of tasty natural wine in hand (easy listening music playing in the background). That’s what we call relaxing.

To warm up the cold December we’ve invited a wine enthusiast and a great selector – @ericfilipus – to mix it up for us. Eric enjoys his life mainly in Barcelona nowadays, so it’s more than special to have his warm touch to the What Are You Listening? -mix series. This December's heating up already. 💚

”I choose records that I would wanna sip wine to in a hazy bar setting, nothing too uplifting, simply just good listening music, the stuff you can listen to for hours, sophisticated, yet warm and playful.” That’s how Eric describes the mix clearly sipping a special wine at the same time.

With cherry and spice and everything nice, this Blaufänkisch pairs well with the season's foods or you can share it by itself with friends.

Grown on the unique lime and slate soil of Leithaberg, Nehrer's Leithaberg Blaufränkisch exudes the vineyard's minerality. Hand picked and sustainably produced, the wine ferments spontaneously in steel containers. Maturation happens in 500 and 2000 liter wooden barrels for 9 months on lees. 

Nehrer family’s vineyard is located in Burgenland on the hills of Leitha Mountain. The area’s terroir consists of a warm climate cooled by cold winds and a soil consisting of clay and lime. These factors create structurally elegant wines which exude the terroir in their flavor.

Throughout the years in the industry and contributions through nightclubs, community radios, record shops, and listening bars, Eric is known for his diverse taste both as a DJ and musical curator. After spending a decade within the music scene in Helsinki, Finland, Eric decided a couple years ago to change the scenery to Mediterranean coast in Barcelona. 

For this 3rd episode of lazed mix series, Eric Filipus takes us somewhere between mountains, seas and forests. An hour voyage deeply rooted on the tribal spectrum and a glimpse of the folklore of an imaginary civilization that we can draw in our mind while listening...

Eric: "The mix is a sum of a months long music journal, centered around spiritual listenings. For a change, I chose not to actively search for tracks. Instead, while listening to music over the past few months, I set aside every piece that resonated within the spiritual context, in sort of a journal way…

Bringing all these pieces of music almost blindly to the studio and intuitively selecting each record while recording felt natural and more importantly honest. It was like gathering moments from the recent past and arranging them in a completely new order. I find value in this approach, where extensive research and preparation lead to a spontaneous compilation at the last moment. 

Every track is played in its entirety, so it’s more of a curational thing, rather than a mixtape. I hope you have peaceful times and can feel at least some of these moments while listening to the recording.

"I was planning to go a bit more atmospheric and techno, but the summer heat took me in a housier direction. I included some personal classics that rarely leave the bag and a bunch of new releases from friends and other producers whose work I admire. After having a little break from DJing, I gained a lot of perspective and felt a need to reconnect with my roots in house music—the dubby, percussive, tribal kind. But let the selection speak for itself; at least it's very true to me."

Solid Steel (17th March) Fink returns to celebrate the release of his album 'Fink's Sunday Night Blues Club' (released on R'COUP'D), with an incredible remix of the whole album from start to finish, in order, using alternative sessions exclusively for Solid Steel. It's a great companion piece to the release, which like the album features Colin Stetson and New Orleans legend David Shirley, on an extended dubbed out journey. Fink had this to say;
"I did my first Solid Steel in 1999, before I'd put a record out ... this is actually my 15th Solid Steel ... and it is still, as it has always been, a great honour to be asked ... now I am as far away from a DJ as someone can be .... my pair of trusty, rusty, 1210's have been separated....but I still love the idea of having an hour to do something, anything, different for the Solid Steel faithful .... so I remixed the whole of my new record for you ... hope you dig it ..."

In the shimmering sunlight the city was a transparent lake, but as the sun crept down the city dissolved into a veiling grey horizon. I remember the faint remoteness as I stared out to my hometown of Los Angeles. I had recently moved back home and had expected for the rush of nostalgia to bloom into a previous self. However, there was instead a stillness that seemed to be waiting for something. The rolling hills before me arched up and down but only seemed to descend. The moments that followed dilated around me and I took solace in knowing that I was truly happy again.

This progression of music tries to embody the slowed and slurred first moments of my days rediscovering Los Angeles and the unintentional ebb and sway of finding myself again. A gradually looping state of lethargy breaks out into its own speed and dance.

Pandemic selecta! Welcome back to another episode of rona-radio, with your host (I don’t actually exist). This one comes courtesy of the Parisian, Rig Thrall, he delivers a hypnotic algorithm that will have you in a tense state of relaxation. 

Coming all the way from Melbournes cousin city, Montreal, Rig Thrall has been heavily invested in the sonic industry for quite a while now and through his many avenues has given back accordingly, through DJ’ing, productions, throwing parties (remember them?) and running record labels. His taste for the left-field really shines through in the mix, pulling you every which way possible with a soft but firm touch, somewhat of a romantic thriller or a soundtrack to one that hasn’t been made yet. 

So consider this an invitation to switch off from the rest of the world and have an hour to yourself to do whatever you please whilst this guides you through.

Welcome back, or is it welcome forth? Who knows anymore, but thank the gods for one of the constant’s in our lives and that’s music.  This perfectly timed episode celebrates the essence of ‘Saudade’ aka the act of missing aka the art of longing aka the aesthetic of nostalgia aka romanticised melancholy, bought to you by the newly appointed master in this domain, Sophie McAlister aka the Nutri Bullet. 

Coming from the ever-fresh stables of Naarm’s own ‘Crown Ruler’ *tip’s the hat*, Sophie is the absolute embodiment of a disc jockey, she’s mastered the art of the casual coasting between genre’s in the form of liquid precision. As most good deej’s, she happily works at a record store (whattup Northside), picking the cream before the public can get their dirty hands on it, (god I miss having a dig), then continues to rub it in the face of the public by playing them across multiple venues around Melbourne and even has the audacity to tease them on a few radio shows. The only thing that matches her talent is her character, a legend to boot. 

Now, the important part, the mix. This thing, this short segment of your life, is a thing of pure beauty. From the very first chord I instantly fell in love, and that love grows exponentially throughout those 94 minutes and 34 seconds. The deeply rooted romance is absolutely sublime throughout, perfect spring picnic soundtrack with the people you love. A transcendent trip around the world all within the comfort of your own mind. It’s such a welcomed breath of fresh air in this suffocating climate. Prepare to listen to it over and over.

Yet again we tune in for another tale of adventure and hope, a poem of escapism heard through someone else’s ears, those ear’s that I speak of belong to Skin Contact aka Matt Sikora via lockdown in Brooklyn NY. A modern-day lullaby, nothing short of perfection, it literally oozes relaxation. And it’s time to do just that. 

I don’t know much about the guy except that he’s real, and he’s been living in New York for a bit and he’s recently returned home to Melbourne, Hopefully, this softens anyone’s woe’s as it did mine and irons out any thoughts as it did his. 
I liken this mix to a sun-drenched afternoon sabbatical into the subspace of the dream world, a lucid trip with heavy eyes and a comfy pillow. Perfect for a power walk through some green space, perfect for the trip home from a music festival or camping (we miss you). Gently caressing audible cotton buds removing any form of tension held in every way possible. It's just fucking lovely. Put on plane mode, press play and coast through this strange thing called life for the next hour or so.

The proprietor of this soundscape is none other than Dro Carey aka Tuff Sherm aka Eugene to his mates. One of those aligned planets is the release of his new album ’Nothing is a solo project’, which by the way is amazing. If you know about this series then you know about Dro/Tuff, if you don’t then do a lil research and it won’t take long to discover the significant imprint he’s had on the world in all his different facets. I would start by listening to the new album (TIP!!/link below) and work your way back, especially The Trilogy Tapes and Templar Sound stuff. (Burglar loops still gets a run in my bag) 
 
Now the important part, as expected the mix is nothing short of pure greatness, re-defining the concept of ‘home’ itself, a welcomed theory given the current circumstances. The elegant shifts in the tide throughout the mix keep things fresh, demanding attention, and changing focus constantly throughout. I was literally baffled at the amount of music that Dro has crammed into just an hour's worth of sound, I for one am wishing it went for 4 hours more. Hints and nods are scattered throughout of his own influences as well some unreleased cuts from the time spent on the album and others from his musical cloth. Laden with multiple versions of euphoria it’s the perfect dose of escapism for the modern world. An absolute testament to the imagination and what it's capable of. I’ll leave the rest to you.

This mix has two main threads explored in parallel: home-listening and home-creating. Often there's a surprising contrast between the sort of things I listen to and the sort of things I make. I think this mix draws some interesting connections between the two. From the home-listening side: some of my favourite ambient music, generally 1980s-90s cassettes from the US and Europe, whisked up thanks to the taste of some invaluable blogs like 433rpm.blogspot.com (and various others over the years). Then to represent the home-creating side are some unreleased tracks that I worked on while making my new album 'Nothing Is A Solo Project.' Connecting the two there's some IDM and ethereal/airy rave-ish material. Ultimately the juxtaposing pacing and long passages of zoned out waves make this one definitely for home use – but there are moments (memories maybe) of the dancefloor that etch their way in too.
