This week’s interpretation of Far Blue comes from Berlin-based DJ and Refuge Worldwide and Kynant Records co-founder Richard Akingbehin.

Known for his dub-influenced sound, he takes a faster, techno-oriented approach here, showing a more driving side of Far Blue. Recorded live this summer at Field Maneuvers Festival, the mix balances between energy and depth. Faster motion, still floating.

Q. What sounds or feelings did you draw upon when gathering inspiration for this mix, and what listening environments could you imagine it being best enjoyed in?

A. Sam: would be amiss not to say deepness – hard to really say what that means, though. Music played deep into the party, everyone on molly, the sound system is the one from Labyrinth, and it’s in Yarra Bend. 

A. Jack: Yeah much the same as Sam, we share a mutual love for deepness albeit in a slightly different way. I hope it will be a bit of an all hours mix for cooking, eating, driving or for the hours after etc.

Q. Are there any records in the mix that you were especially excited to share, and what is it about these songs that resonate with you so much?

A. Sam: Many resonate, but the Baby Ford track toward the beginning sums up the whole deepness-being-difficult-to-describe thing, for me at least. David Alvarado does that to me as well – he features a fair bit here. 

A. Jack: there have been many tunes I would've loved to include - but without much defined planning we got to this mix one afternoon. Bit of a mish mash of different deepish tunes from over the years, moving around home base which is good old house music. Nothing too serious.

Q. You’ve both been involved in facilitating a myriad of great underground parties in Melbourne over the last decade from outdoor raves to basement club nights, Jack, tell us about your latest endeavour Reasons and how that fits into the music community focussed party ethos?

A. Jack: Reasons came about as a bit of an evolution from just running parties, toward something that connects and platforms the people around me and incorporates music, food and art.. After spending time overseas, I felt a strong pull to bridge those worlds, and to bring some of those ideas we encountered abroad back home.  

Q. I know you’ve both been working hard on various studio projects both solo and collaboratively, tell us about the latest endeavours, and what sounds are you enjoying exploring whilst working together?

A. Sam: Making music together has always come naturally, finishing tracks less so. Plans mostly go out the window once we start, but I feel like we’ve always converged on a distinct feeling without having to explicitly voice. I like exploring all sounds with Neil, but I guess we’ve always tended to steer toward some kind of 90s nostalgia. The final track in the mix is a useful example.

A. Jack: We’re both always making music in some form, sometimes with more focus than others, at least for me. We’ve always got a few bits in the works I guess (including the last track in the mix), but as Sam said, finishing things together doesn't always happen... Lately, I’ve been trying to be a bit more deliberate with what I am making. Definitely a few releases to come in the next 6 months, as well as a new non-dance music project.

for our inaugural transmission, it is a great honour to bring you an hour long tape only mix by Rings Around Saturn, aka Dan White (rip) aka 2200 aka Pickleman aka 1/2 of Turner Street Sound and known to his mum as Rory Mcpike, it doesn’t really matter what you call him, his talent speaks beyond this planet. Going from strength to strength, Rory has released on some of the best local and international record labels such as Butter Sessions, Analogue Attic, Forbidden Planet and his latest on Unthank. Personally, Rory has had a big influence on me and my musical direction ever since that first live set at Inner Varnika 15 and has been a pivotal player in taking Australian music to an international audience. So please, without further ado, dim the lights, put on your headphones (anything but laptop speakers), pour the chamomile and sit back and R E L A X, you're at home.

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.  

For our second episode, we’ve none other the man ‘wush’ himself. Josh to his mates, Joshua to his mum and Jah to his followers, an amoeba who has the power to go in any direction. A long time player who’s only in it for one reason, the ‘love’. 

Sought after by many because there are slots that only Wush can fill, an Inner Varnika staple, always strategically placed to pep the crowd up or wind the crowd down, all with the precision of a surgeon. 

Wush, paired with Herb Powers and Winters run the Melbourne based record label Parallel People (tip!) that also moonlights as a gathering at Section 8 on the reg, which is a celebration of the diverse noise that drives them and doubles as a short course in the arts for the gen pop.

Personally, his perfectly executed “DANCE TIL DAWN” mix sits right up there with the best, as well as all his other sonic adventures over the years and it's with great excitement that I can present this mix to you. 

"Mix was done last Sunday, pulled the window up, put the heater on, let some of the god's incense flow and drank some green tea and made the mix, just wanted to try and put some new stuff I've been feeling on the electronic tip, some more club, some less. Some new ambient stuff in there and just try and switch up the vibe a bit, not get too stuck in anyone bit"

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

Joining us for our third installment is the queen of Queensland, Miss Emma Stevenson aka DJ XXXX (fourex) aka the lady of the deep aka the iceberg that sunk the titanic. Hailing from the sunshine state where there's no such thing as rain or daylight savings, she’s used the lack of infringement on time to her advantage, honing her skills to become an absolute solid force in the idiosyncratic world of the ‘disk jock’. 

In the last few years, Brisbane has popped its head up in the scene with a number great producer’s, record labels, DJ’s and parties, firmly stamping their own imprint on the Australian landscape. Emma has been a huge part of this movement, sticking it out, avoiding the temptation to move to Melbourne or Sydney and just holding down the fort in Brisbo. Her digging habits compare to that of nervous badger, constructing complex, long-lasting networks of tunnels and chambers that make up her deeply rooted DJ sets.  

The mix itself is almost perfect for a post-club debrief, almost like a bed time story with a twist at the end. Layers upon layers of lush soundscapes laden with memory triggers and spatial echoes. I recommend being selfish on this one and putting in your headphones. 

Personally, I’m a massive fan of Emma on both sides of the decks so it's an absolute pleasure to present this mix and I can’t wait to see how far she will go.

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

Now that we know each other it's time to stretch a few minds and travel to some new worlds and who better to guide you than Thick Owens aka the clean shank kid aka the living mona lisa. 

On our fourth excursion, you're invited to explore every nook in the known universe, a take on a silent indie romantic horror soundtrack, a tapestry from the future. Carelessly blending sounds like a blind bartender's seeing eye dog. From Amazonian forest punk to post-post-neu-old wave kraut folk rock to slow-mo AI techno, take a step into the darkness, it's nice to have some contrast. 

Thick Owens hails from Sydney, running his brand of fun by the name of 'OKRA', a beacon for the people in the shape of a rave, he's also one on the brains behind the soon to be legendary 'Soft Centre', a festival for the whole body held just outside Sydney in an old power plant. At such a young age with all the right idea's, it's safe to say the future is in good hands. 

So with out further ado, wait till the sun sets, turn the lights down, decide on a ‘safe’ word and tell everyone to shut up, then press play. 

~ A letter from Thick ~

To whom it may concern,

After much delay and deliberation Thick Owens has emerged from the avant-garden to present his illprog-opus featuring dad-rock (Pink Floyd), pub rock (Grinderman), artrock (Jonny Greenwood), a Tool interlude, a theme song from a good TV show, William S. Burroughs talking for a while and a diary excerpt from Thick himself, titled: 'the weekend I finally got into Berghain'. 

This is not dance music! This is FOR HOME USE ONLY!

This is also an apology to my dad for selling my guitar. I just want him to know, I never forgot how to play. 

To be honest, I kind of imagined myself playing this to my dad if we went out for an unlikely bend and had an unlikely kick-ons and we mixed in weed and shit got loopy but we weren't allowed to leave until we smoothed out the kinks. 

Pink Floyd had to be the starting point. It alway was. But this is me saying "Dad, look where I started, and look at how I've grown, I'm no longer that little twerp practising Megadeth arpeggios, there's a whole world of music out there, I hope you can grow with me."

I don't want to turn this into a domestic, but it's definitely suited to the humble abode.

Sup! We back! 

So, we’re up to number 5 and who better to celebrate with than Dj Fett Burger! The Norwegian land dolphin aka Captain Sarcasm aka DJ anti-establishment aka possibly one of the nicest guy’s you’ll ever meet. 

Founder of the legendary ‘Sex Tags’ record label and the always faithful ‘Trushmix’ series, An extremely talented being across all forms of ‘art’ (loose term), from remixing tracks to doodling on a used napkin the man oozes a frustrating amount of genius without ever sacrificing his own ethics. 

Fett Burger and his equally talented brother, Dj Sotofett have worked their asses off over the last 15 years to get where they are now, building Sex Tags literally from the ground up, it took years of hard work to shape the label, nowadays we’re at the mercy of asshole discog’s resellers to even get a sniff of an old release. 

Mr. Burger himself as a DJ is pretty close to god level, the way he plays is like none other, A journeyman that can only be matched by a sherpas donkey running rings around the summits of Mt. Everest. If you’ve been lucky enough to see him play then you know exactly what I’m talking about. 

The mix itself, a toxic blend of disco, funk, soul and reggae, a perfect soundtrack to dancing in the kitchen. A guaranteed mood heightener, A contagious trip amongst the stars, even your mum will enjoy. Scientifically impossible to not nod your head for an hour and a half, this won’t leave your portable media player for years to come. 

I’ve been lucky to get to know the burg’s over the last couple of years as we’ve had him at Inner Varnika for the last 3 and he’s helped us evolve the festival into something we only dreamed of, he truly ‘gets it’ more than most and he’s always happy to help in any way possible with a side of the driest humour known to man. It’s an absolute honor to put this mix out, it brings to light exactly what we’re about, which is completely open to interpretation.

Hello? 

Yeah hi. So um it's been a minute or ten. Anyway. We're back with number eight, arguably the luckiest number in galaxy. I've invited long time cohort and part time friend, the Peppermint Darling aka the Jeremy Barr experience aka the perilous prince of pleasure aka the Lo-fi Ainsley Harriet of left field chillcore. 

The man himself is one hell of a confounding creature, scientists have studied him since birth but to no avail, literally raising more questions than answering them, originally coming from his mother via some strange European country, he is now a part of the furniture in ye olde melbourne town. One of the founding fathers of the infamous Caviar Lounge, professional party throwers/goers. A self professed master in the art of awkward body humour, there's never a dull moment when he's around, in fact I don't think I've ever had a serious interaction with him, he's a kind of spit milk out ya nose type operator, great for weddings, not so much for funerals. 

Now, the mix, a perfect exploitation of others artwork, all pieced together in a poetic manner. The musical choice on the journey is flawless, it's a mix you would listen to on your first trip to mars, the soundtrack to driving your soon to be ex wife home on your first date, you could play it in any uber and the driver would have to pull over every three and half minutes to Shazam the track so then he could play the tracks back to unsuspecting high rollers in the off chance they would bump his rating up from a 4.2 to a 4.3. I've personally listened to it at least once a few months back and from what I can remember, you're going to love it.  All jokes aside, it's one of my favourite submissions, it completely embodies the aesthetic of why I started such a thing. Hopefully you stopped reading ages ago and you're already half way through your second listen.
