Music is an anchor in life, useable in any if not every scenario to shift or change your current mood. It's something that you have complete control of (unless you’re in someone else’s car), this control, I find is somewhat taken for granted every now and then and I think in this strange time of our lives it's very important to take control of what you can. Speaking of control, it's something our next guest has mastered, A Naarm favourite Bex. 

Hard work, dedication, and a belief in one's self are the holy trinity to the path of evolution, All of these factors Bex has mastered. Through years and years of commitment to her craft, Bex has steeled herself amongst her peers and their dance floors, forever increasing her orbit and her listeners inside of it. Encompassing the pure aesthetics of Dj’ing (an understanding of rhythm and how people react to it), she has cemented herself as a staple DJ all across Naarm as well pushing the same ethos with her own party series “Spincycle” (HOT TIP!!). She’s here to stay and it fills me with confidence for the future. 

The mix itself beautifully encompasses the very thing I’ve set out to explore, the other side. For someone who is consistently filling dance floors, you can tell Bex has done herself justice in reaching into her musical peripherals and wholeheartedly enjoyed doing it. Ecstatic trips into euphoria electronica, A consistent theme explored in its whole, done masterfully. Computer-generated soul at its finest, using BPM as a narrative tool, she takes us on a trip through her own mind, leaving no stone unturned. After countless play-throughs, I still find little details that excite me, her technical skills on full display for the world to see. A perfect summary of Bex herself. Enjoy it every way you can.

Here we are, still breathing, doing what we can in whatever way we can, still breathing, life is good, hard, but good. Enjoy it by all means possible. 
I do have something that might help though, as it's helped me, and it is this beautiful mix from Naarm based Kāmna. 

Kāmna is most definitely someone to pay attention to. Her breadth of knowledge and understanding of all things noise is truly unique, and if this mix doesn’t convince you of that, then go back and listen to her ‘Bleus’ and ‘Hue & Saturation’ mixes. Her ability to piece together the unknown has rewarded her with more and more gigs around town and I feel that this is only the beginning. 

Strap yourselves in for 109 minutes of pure elation, completely captivating from the get go, completely gripped until you’re let go. A mix of fun and flirtatious movements and ideals with bits and bobs of pretty much everything under the sun. A contemporary and refreshing approach to the lost art of the mix tape, it’s so easy to tell how much each one of these songs means to her. Submerged in a rich cultural understanding of how the world works, the mix blends multiple narratives together to create a harmonious tapestry that is just so damn nice on the ears. A mix that will happily haunt you for the rest of your life.

About my productions: I try to make the intention around my productions natural, almost sub-conscious - intention when producing music can get you into some tricky spots, where you aren’t really feeling anything but rather just forcing it. I was chatting to a friend the other day and he was showing me some of his music, it was so pure, authentic, i could tell it was a labour of love and i thought that’s when you make the best stuff, when you pour it all out, it doesn’t have to be hard, but it does have to be real.

About the mix: Dance floor direct stuff has an immediacy to it, when you are crafting something to be played at home, the reasoning changes, as if you almost want to be immersed in its temporality. For me these records recall a lot of the initial moments of connecting with something which validates an experience. 

Headspace when i made the mix: I’m not a fantastic sleeper, i’ve always had issues with that. I wouldn’t say i’m terrible, i mean i’ve survived but it does agitate me. If i can’t sleep, i’ll usually head to my studio to make or mix music. It’s always weird & somnambulistic but i feel at peace there and i’m never trying to make too much noise. In this case, i felt recreating some dream-state, slipping between moods and riding the very soft ebbs and flows of energy i get from mild insomnia.

Sounds carry intelligence.

From Oakland with love comes the 50th submission in the mix series comes by the hand of prolific producer and deejay Space Ghost (@space-ghost-1). Interview (excerpt) down below.

MFM: Hey Sudi. How's life in California, what's been keeping you busy?

SG: Hey, not much! Just trying to enjoy the summer with friends and get in the studio when I can.

MFM: Looking at your discography it seems that you favor the LP over the EP format, having released well over a dozen albums. How come?

SG: I can’t say that I favor one over the other, just seems that as a musician you strive to write full length LPs. I enjoy LPs for home listening and it feels good to create a nice body of work that flows through a journey. Writing dance singles and eps are trickier for me. It feels harder to write 1-4 really good stand alone songs.

MFM: With such a prolific output, does writing music come easily to you? Can you tell us a bit about how you go about writing and recording, is there a certain flow or method?

SG: Hmm I wouldn’t necessarily say it comes comes easy but I’ve definitely gotten a lot better at getting ideas in my head out into my recordings. It’s still a process of getting into the studio and spending time on it. Sometimes I can spend a whole day or two just spinning my wheels and not being able to get my ideas out. But once I get that perfect dose of creativity and I’m in the right mood, then things can definitely start flowing out. When writing music I often need to start with a very specific idea based on a song I’m listening to at the time. It’s helpful for me to start out with that initial inspiration, whether some chords, style of drums, bassline or a tempo or something. Once I get a few elements working around that idea the song can start to morph and move in any direction, but I really need that specific direction to start. I find that I can often make a rudimentary idea fairly quickly this way and then if it’s inspiring me, I’ll start to try a little bit harder and flush out more of the idea.

MFM: How do you cope with not being inspired or motivated when in the studio?

SG: Honestly it can be a bummer to be in the studio and the ideas aren’t flowing. I’ll just have to step away and do something totally unrelated for a few days.

MFM: Your sound overall has a very soft and melodic touch. The mellow part may be from living close to the Pacific and nature, but where does the melodic part come from? Did you ever learn how to read and play notes?

SG: You know I’m really not sure if I can pinpoint my melodies and where they came from but ya I grew up taking music lessons of all sorts. Piano, drums, guitar, band class, all that stuff. I wasn’t the best at reading music, I learned basic stuff but eventually didn’t progress much farther. Now everything I do is by feel.

MFM: Is there some kind of masterplan for Space Ghost? Like, do you have certain goals to achieve or dreams to chase?

SG: I think my master plan would involve me getting to focus on writing music full time. Honestly I’m not really sure how to get there specifically, seems like everyone gets there on their own path so hopefully mine will end up there as well.

MFM: Tell us about the mix. How did you go about selecting and recording it? Does it have a certain theme or idea to it?

SG: I’ve been wanting to put out a nice lil ambient sort of electronic mix for awhile. Really soft deep introspective vibes. I’ve been holding on to a lot of these tunes for awhile and just listening to my playlist of ambient tunes while traveling or relaxing with friends. After coming back from my NZ/Australian tour, I was ready to play some non dance music for a sec and listen to some other stuff. This mix is just a nice break from DJing a party. I also really want to make an ambient album soon if I have the time, so there are a lot inspirations in this mix.

As the old saying goes, good thing's come to those who wait. To give that statement some purchase I would like to rewind a few years. Back to before I started this thing, but just after I came up if with the concept, the person responsible for this mix was literally the second name I wrote down to ask for a submission. That person’s name was, and still is, Millú aka the mad hatter aka the silky bar kid aka the human shot glass. Millú’s importance in Melbourne has become solidified over the past few years, going from strength to strength to strength, like a skipping stone across an infinity pool, and she’s dead set (party) legend! 
 
She peaked my attention a few years ago when she played at one of the Max Graef parties at the Gaso we did (which she also helps run ~ bless) and she has firmly kept my attention since. Watching her do her thing, which in turn makes the punters do their thing, is a satisfying sight to say the least. From the depths of hugs to the vast expanse of the supernatural amphitheater, her spell is easy to notice and impossible to resist. I think she’s my most shazamed DJ on the planet - I look to her for a continues source of inspiration. She’s just that fucking good and this mix proves it. 
 
Taking a holiday from the chuggy breaky bleep, she has landed in this pure heavenly mix of lounge and street soul. This instantly takes me back to the good old days of the early 2000’s trip hop phase, (K & D sessions eat your heart out) which is like a pure bliss time machine for me - taking me back to a simpler time, with an air of arrogance attached to a clueless teenager (me), Millú aurally takes me on a beautiful trip down memory lane (which I’m sure will touch anyone who pays this mix a single bit of attention). Perfectly blended like the best milkshake you’ve ever had, perfectly executed like the best dive in Olympic history.

Hopefully my grandchildren will listen to this mix as much as you’re about to.

Originally from Sydney, @lilydalton is now living in Melbourne where she has been spending the lockdown period exploring a widely expanding catalogue of music and walking her dog. Lily is a versatile DJ who is wholeheartedly addicted to the pursuit of special records from then and now. She has an affinity for deeper, stripped-back sounds and is inspired by the escapist possibilities offered by immersive soundscapes.

"The world feels pretty claustrophobic right now so I thought I’d approach this mix with the mindset of trying to counter that with soundscapes that feel quite vast. I’ve found that music is resonating with me differently amidst the current times and I think this mix is quite reflective of that. This is a slow-moving mix with moments of heightened emotion but also a fair amount of breathing room. Best suited for a solitary stroll or simply for staring out the window: I hope this mix provides you with the same calm escape as it does for me."
