Peregrine falcons are the fastest animals in the air, diving at  mind-blowing speeds of over 300 km/h to grab other birds out of the sky like streamlined feathered ninjas. Around the world falcon populations fell to dangerously-low levels in the 1960s and 70s, mainly due to use of toxic pesticides like DDT. Since then most governments have banned DDT and outlawed killing falcons, while huge efforts from NGOs and captive breeding programmes have slowly brought this species back from the edge. In a mad turnaround they’ve gone from being endangered in 1978 to no-longer-at-risk in 2017. But that doesn't mean our work is done. Conservation efforts are still essential in keeping these incredible hunters alive and we can support by donating to Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU).
