Continuing on a landmark year for the label, we’re back on Modern Ruin with yet another vibe-soaked debut from Malou Morkeberg.

“Ladyboy” is the first offering from the Danish, Barcelona based debutant. A catchy hook emphasizes the title, peppering itself throughout as moody keys support a bouncy footwork groove. 

Using a more traditional ghetto house vocal, second track “Make It” showcases a wonderful juxtaposition of footwork’s more recent influences while paying homage to the originators.

Coming in third, “Hyggeling” truly embodies the Danish art of happiness in its execution. An infectious lowend progression provides foundation to this sun soaked homage to “chillaxing”.

We end the original offerings with “Go Back” - a percussive exploration from the producer. Finally - accompanied by a tremendous remix of “Ladyboy” from BSN Posse - we wrap up yet another statement release from Modern Ruin."

With the sweat dripping from the ceiling and the dancing reaching a frenetic pace, Malou Mørkeberg drops his Debut EP on Modern Ruin Records. 
Equipped with all the right tools to make this a serious offering Malou, presents the experience and professionalism expected from releases on the Modern Ruin label. Hailing from Denmark, while living in Barcelona this well-traveled artist brings his culture and flair to the electronic arena. Already backed by multiple EP’s, from labels including Ten Toes Turbo and Good Street Records, Ladyboy continues to show the evolution of the new wave of 160bpm music. 

With the introductory track being the title track of the EP, Ladyboy opens with a steady pulse rhythm to set the mood. Lights go down, and the heartbeat steadily increases with the systematic bass beat, before the chorus of “What are you to do, Ladyboy”, repeats to variations of the main beat. “I don’t care”, repeated over again throughout the apex of this track shows a resolve of the demeanor of the main themed character. An elegant offering sets the tempo of what is going to be a multi-dimensional musical experience. 

“Make It”, takes the dancers into a frenzy as Malou Mørkeberg professes to the club, “Make it clap, make it roll, dance on the floor. Make it clap, make it roll, drop it down low.” With a steady bass, and an expertly syncopated drum roll carrying this track forward, the hips start swaying and the anxiety builds as the expectation that this is about to erupt. The sharp snap of the bass drum, cut off before the decay gives the overall feel more staccato, and emulates a heart-beat dancing and “Dropping it down low”. 

Nicely placed in the middle of the Ladyboy EP is “Hyggeling” which we are led to believe translates to “nice and cozy“. Apart from the basslines that fit nice and cozy into this melodious piece, the offbeat syncopations create a double step with the rhythm which is both challenging and satisfying. Playing with tempo changes in this track keep this piece an intellectual experience as well as being entertaining. 

The tasty number “Go Back” centers around revolving beats that target the echoing synth waves creating a large hall with the listening space. By not rushing the beat on this track Malou demonstrates his artistic maturity, keeping well-paced with the tempos this track demands. We especially like the snare sound captured on this track, as it really punches thought the dynamics of the track. 

To finish off this EP off we go back to the beginning and revisit “Ladyboy”. This remix by BSN Posse draws a new element to the title track with a slowed down savvy interpretation of Malou’s original theme. With its quickened drumming but softer melodies, this remix adds a romantic element. The repeated lyrics have been pitch bent to a higher octave to compliment the higher melodies.
