Disquiet Junto Project 0172: Digital-Analog Conflater

Analog stuff: an acoustic guitar tuned to DADAAD, an Altoids box full of coins, and a Hindi textbook
Digital stuff: FM synthesizer with 4 detuned saw wave oscillators, some chorus and delay, and standard Ableton drum kit samples
made the riff up on the spot, recorded on my laptop, figured out what notes I was using, recorded while listening to the drum loops with headphones, yadda yadda yadda, and voila

Sic Narf [disquiet0172 - Daconflater]

So with every Disquiet assignment there is always a question as to how literal once should take rules.

For this one I had to do the same thing twice. Once analog and once digital. I began by making a patch and a sequence on my DSI Mopho (monophonic synthesizer) on which I have learned a trick to make it paraphonic (two notes at once).
When I was satisfied I loaded up SuperCollider and more or less recreated the patch. Synced them both up to the same MIDI source and recorded. Pan'ed slightly to the left is the Mopho and to the right SuperCollider.
The analog synth sounds drastically different due to a feedback loop that isn't really possible to recreate digitally.

Couldn't help it - sorry. Recorded myself writing a note by hand, as well as the same thing written on my laptop... Must be aftereffect of the sound art exhibit I went to see today.

Disquiet Junto Project 0172: Digital-Analog Conflater
Do something analog, then do the same thing digitally, and then combine them.

These are the steps for this week’s project:

Step 1: Do something analog.

Step 2: Do the same thing digitally.

Step 3: Combine them. The end result of Step 3 is your finished track.

Step 4: Upload your track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This assignment was made in the evening, California time, on Thursday, April 16, 2015, with a deadline of 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, April 20, 2015.

Length: The length of your finished work should be between half a minute and two minutes.

Upload: Please when posting your track on SoundCloud, only upload one track for this assignment, and include a description of your process in planning, composing, and recording it. This description is an essential element of the communicative process inherent in the Disquiet Junto. Photos, video, and lists of equipment are always appreciated.

Title/Tag: When adding your track to the Disquiet Junto group on Soundcloud.com, please include the term “disquiet0172-daconflater” in the title of your track, and as a tag for your track.

“disquiet0172-daconflater” messaging

Do something analog, then do the same thing digitally, and then combine them.

Analog sounds are created by placing my forearm across the white keys of a piano, lifting the dampers and strumming the strings down and up with my finger. Natural piano reverberation.  

Digital glissandi are generated by Yamaha TG-77 with midi data created by Ensemble running on a NeXT computer. The software is producing a narrow cluster of pan-diatonic notes that moves down and up in response to a modulating sine wave.

Endless Falls [disquiet0172-daconflater]

I played and recorded a simple raw sounding riff on my Microbrute for a couple of minutes allowing it to evolve slightly. Then converting the audio to midi I created a percussive part and a delayed piano for the digital elements. The whole piece was then cut into a repeating loop of the section that grabbed my imagination.
