Circumference, better known as Finlay Freshney-Lee and Kit Jones, are two 19-year old trailblazing producers from East Ham and Exeter respectively. Having met at college in 2017, the two have been largely inseparable since, dropping their first official release earlier this year with their remix of Paper Dragon’s ‘New Religion’. Now following up their beastly debut outing ‘Midsommar’ on ‘Soul Music 2020’ - the pair continue to show off their effortless versatility in this varied 2-track single. 

Opener ‘Inconsistent’ displays an almost inhuman, incomprehensible array of sounds and styles in under 4 minutes. The textured and uncertain intro builds tension, resulting in a bass laden, clicky groove. This is quickly followed by beefy, Noisia-esque drums and more impressive percussion and bass texturing. 

‘Shlock’ on the other hand, backs up the swelling intro with snappy drums and powerful synth stabs that have all the hallmarks of a dancefloor damager. The glitchy second drop brings even more creative synth work to the forefront that results in a tune that is definitely a “tale of two halves''.

Forthcoming on the 4th of December, the Bristol boys offer up a seriously sophisticated slice of dancefloor Christmas fun, guaranteed to warm your cockles (or cause your tree to spontaneously combust!).

Through his EP Deep Water/ Dusk Flight, Somatic explores a lot of granular processing. This process of breaking down a sample into lots of small granules and then messing with them is how he tries to make sense of the sonic world and the journey that unfolded during that process culminated with this EP!
 
In the first track, Deep Water, Somatic wanted to explore a darker side of drum and bass to what he’d previously been making. “A sonic tale about what I imagine it might be like to explore the depths of the oceans or lakes; the creatures you might find and the myths and legends that you might find out to actually be true.”__ Somatic
 
In the second track, Dusk Flight, he’s encapsulated the shift from a lazy early evening through dusk and into the night where things get more energetic. This simultaneously makes him think of what it would be like to be a bird just chillin in the lazy evening air flying about.
 
Both tracks were created as part of a project exploring how creating music for a surround sound (Ambisonic format) environment can heighten the listening experience. As there's no records of anyone doing anything like this with dance music before, he drew on compositional techniques such as gesture, force and space from acousmatic music.

  Coming from a dual heritage Indian-English background, Somatic (Somin Griffin-Dave) specialises in the sonic world as a sound artist, producer, DJ, sound engineer and tour manager.
Inspired by the Devon landscapes he grew up in, his versatile practice includes creating electronic music that treads the line between club and home listening, audio for dance & film and audio-visual creation.

Although his sound is routed in electronica and more traditional dance music genres like Jungle, Drum and Bass, IDM, Techno and Breakbeat, he draws on music from a wide pool such as Bossa, Afrobeat, Cumbia, modern western Classical, Jazz and his Indian heritage to create a big melting pot of sounds that informs in sonic identity.
