What's good GRA gang? Welcome back to our synodically recurring mix series, 'Styles'! For our eighth episode, we have an absolutely jam packed 32 minute Deep Dub mix from our very own Mr. Scissors featuring an astounding 29 tracks. "Deep dub, often simply referred to as dubstep initially, traces its roots to the vibrant music scene of Kingston, Jamaica in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It emerged from reggae as a distinctive style of remixing and manipulating existing recordings. It is typically characterized by its slower tempo, emphasis on sub bass and atmospheric soundscapes, and often darker, more brooding atmosphere. With it's emergence from the early dubstep scene, it is known for its minimalist approach, hypnotic beats, and spacious feel. At its inception, Burial emerged as a key figure, crafting atmospheric soundscapes that define deep dubstep. His ability to evoke emotions through ethereal melodies and haunting vocal samples set a high standard for the genre. Labels like Hyperdub became synonymous with this subgenre, curating a catalog of music that explores the depths of sonic possibility. In the modern landscape of deep dubstep, artists like Kaiju and labels like Deep Dark & Dangerous continue to expand the genre's horizons. Their productions delve into uncharted territories, exploring the darkest corners of bass music while maintaining a sense of elegance and restraint. Alongside them, artists like Sleeper and labels like Chestplate contribute to the ongoing evolution of deep dubstep, ensuring its enduring appeal among dedicated listeners."

And, talking about endless hours, he provided us with an extract from his closing set at the Toi.Toi. party at Guesthouse this April, a night which he ended up closing on a b2b with Topper. “As a DJ I listen a lot of new and old music. Usually I sort my collection by stories in folders. some folders I use for dance floors and others for podcasts. This mix is one of those folders. Rhis is my favourite one and of course i choose it to introduce myself. This music has a depth, interesting rhythms and psychedelic sounds - that’s what I love in techno music! There are shamanic drums, velvet basslines and magic. This inspires me, makes me loose the ego and become the music. This is the mystic story from beginning till end.”

YAMA MUSIC Mix Tape Vol.4 - Dan Formless

Dan Formless launches Saboteurs Sanctuary as an auditory expression of his Forward Movement studio in London, UK.

An avid collector of music gear with a penchant for vintage units, Dan has scoured the globe collecting rare studio machinery in a quest to create unique sounds. His travels have added further layers to an already rich canvas, painted by DJ exploits across major cities in Europe and Asia, alongside residencies in London nightclubs.

Focusing on solo music production, Dan has dedicated the last few years to his creative process liberation whilst experimenting with drum machines, synthesizers and effects. He is now sharing the results of these sonic explorations, delving into the deeper sides of house, techno and electro whilst staying true to his dubby minimal roots.

The inaugural ‘Actions Speak Louder’ EP hits the ground running with two original tracks from Dan Formless and a stellar remix from Alex Celler. ‘Nitty Gritty’ is a peak time brain melter with sizzling synth lines and intricate drum patterns occupying the A-side. ‘4Q’ weaves together syncopated rhythms and deep rolling bass lines on the flip side. These are punctuated by playful call-and-response synth motifs to create an enigmatic after-hours slow burner. Alex Celler offers a glitchy ‘4Q’ remix with his undeniable flair for fusing infectious grooves with futuristic aural landscapes in a late night exploration of modular electronics.
