In this episode, Professor Graham Currie speaks to Margareta Friman and Maria Borjesson, two of the authors of Chapter 20 of the Handbook: Large increases in bus use in Sweden: lessons learned. Margareta Friman works at Karlstad University where she is Pro-vice Chancellor, as well as Professor of Psychology and member of the Service and Market Oriented Transport (SAMOT) Research Group. Maria Borjesson is Professor of Economics and a researcher at VTI – The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute and Likoping University. 

Professor Friman talks about the three areas of focus for public transport research at SAMOT: travel behaviour, travel experiences, and perceived accessibility. One of SAMOT’s strengths is pairing psychology and business perspectives to provide insights about the motivations for public transport mode shift. Their research has also elevated the role of the user, not just gaining insights about their travel experiences, but also giving a user focus to contracting and service design. Their perceived accessibility research aims to understand the extent to which users feel they can undertake the travel they want. SAMOT’s ongoing passenger experience research unveiled a shift in the relative importance of ‘stress’ during COVID-19, with its relative importance increasing. 

Professor Friman is joined by Professor Maria Borjesson to discuss the lessons learned from Sweden’s major bus network expansion, the focus of Chapter 20 of the Handbook. In recent years, Sweden enjoyed a 50% increase in bus use. How did they achieve this? The country increased the supply of bus services dramatically. Yet despite this expansion, operating costs increased per unit of travel. They attribute this to the bespoke, and not necessarily supply-driven, nature of the revamped network. Increased operating costs have driven up the ticket price of transport dramatically, which has in turn created an equity issue for pre-existing users of public transport. Finally, Sweden has not seen a reduction in car use. This demonstrates the need to understand if bus use can really reduce car travel; a major motivation for Sweden’s investment in the bus network.

119 - The Secrets of Riparian Zones: Water, Seeds, and Biodiversity

Programming has been presented as a way for students to learn mathematics. In his licentiate thesis, David Taub challenges this idea by investigating if and how it works. In his study, groups of Swedish secondary school students, most of them novice programmers, were observed and interviewed as they conducted programming tasks in the classroom.
The findings indicate that although it seems possible for the act of programming itself to help students construct new mathematical concepts, it is unlikely to be an effective classroom strategy. In our conversation, David explains that the cognitive difficulties novice programmers encountered when writing programs became an obstacle to learning new mathematics as well as dramatically increasing the time needed to complete apparently simple tasks.

AVSNITT 1 : PILGRIMSVANDRING

Vi möter Helena Lundberg som disputerat i arbetsvetenskap med avhandlingen "Strävan efter värdighet: En studie av servicearbete". I sin avhandling har Helena Lundberg studerat hur de anställda hanterar påfrestande arbetsförhållanden, bristen på inflytande och den ofta nedvärderande syn som kunderna bemöter dem med.

AVSNITT 3 : STRÄVAN EFTER VÄRDIGHET

Idag är en hel del av den trafik som skickas över datanäten så kallad realtidstrafik, exempelvis trafik då man samtidigt som evenemanget pågår, distribuerar en konsert eller ett idrottsevenemang över datanätet. För att möta de tidskrav som realtidsöverföring innebär, behöver fördröjningen/latensen för överföringen över datanäten minimeras. Ett sätt för att uppnå detta kan vara att utnyttja flera olika nätverk för att skicka data mellan sändare och mottagare. I vårt samtal berättar datavetaren Johan Eklund om hur detta skulle kunna ske utifrån de resultat han visat i sin doktorsavhandling Latency Reduction for Soft Real-Time Traffic using SCTP Multihoming.

Ever got delayed on your way to surf the web? Then this podcast might be something for you. Toke Høiland-Jørgensen talks about his thesis “On the Bleeding Edge: Debloating Internet Access Networks” in which he studied why and how internet access delays occur. This is increasingly important in times when more and more devices are connected to the internet and applications become more interactive. We need our network to respond reliably and without unnecessary delay. Tokes work focuses on one of those delays. They are called bufferbloats and are a result of excess queuing delay in network routers that occur along the path. Learn more about what it is, why it is a problem and what can be done to make it better.

16 Debloating Internet Access Networks

Hur styrs egentligen den Europeiska unionen och vilken roll har regioner och kommuner i EU:s beslutsprocesser?  Magnus Lindh har i sin avhandling ”Regionen och EU?” tittat närmare på vilka uppfattningar och attityder regionala aktörer Västsverige har till regionalt handlande i EU-relaterade frågor. Han berättar i podden om diskussionerna kring nedläggningen av West Sweden som var ett regionalt representationskontor i Bryssel som uppfattats som framgångsrikt. Det överraskande beslutet att lägga ned kontoret utgör avhandlingens studieobjekt. Magnus berättar i podden hur bland annat kunskap och erfarenhet om EU-arbete påverkar regionernas aktivitet i EU frågor.

Johan Netz har tittat på frågan ur ett företagsperspektiv och publicerat sina resultat i avhandlingen ” First things first - think before you decide: The how, what and who of idea screening”.
