in 2003 Steve Raskin, Rob Myers, Jon Horvath, and Sid Barcelona formed Fort Knox Five in Washington, D.C. as a project to explore all things funky, regardless of genre or tempo. From the beginning, the vibe was retro, the sound was funk, and the beats were fresh. 20 years into it and FK5 are still going strong!

Another Decade of Funk continues the musical journey started on 10 years of Fort Knox Five released in 2013. That compilation showcased the origins and evolution of the Fort Knox sound and created the foundation for the decade that followed.

The story of the second decade kicks off with Fort Knox Five’s sophomore studio album,
Pressurize The Cabin. This collection features some choice gems from that release including the boom bap party anthem "Reach”, featuring Flex Mathews.  Mustafa Akbar drops the funk on “Whatcha Gonna Do” and “Keep it Poppin” while legendary British trombonist and soul crooner Ashley Slater brings the heat on “Fire in my Belly.” (Available here as a radio edit for the first time)

After a chance meeting with Sir Joe Quarterman, one of D.C.’s legendary singers from the 70’s, the group cooked up the floor burner “Don’t Go”, which captures the vibe of D.C.’s classic funk era. “Give it a Minute” pushes the hometown influence into the future with its Go-Go meets 808 jeep beats topped by the bouncing crisp flow of Bcap. 

In 2017 Steve relocated to British Columbia and some incredible collaborations followed starting with the modern funk-meets-glitch hop banger “Jinglin’ Janglin’” with K+Lab, featuring vocals by hip hop royalty Baby Bam (Jungle Brothers). The “DC to BC” series grew, teaming up with Slynk on “Keep the Funk Real”, and with Lazy Syrup Orchestra on “Start the Ride”, both exploring some west coast mid tempo vibes. 

Alongside these future forward collaborations, the classic FK5 sound can be heard loud and clear on “Playing with Fire” featuring Emily Molloy as well as the funky instrumental groover “McGuires Audio Shop.” 

The 11 tracks on Another Decade of Funk celebrate the funky flavors that Fort Knox Five have been creating over the last decade, and see the continued evolution of the group taking the FK sound straight into the future. 

Fort Knox Recordings thrives as a melting pot of genres, where Funk, Breaks, House, Downtempo, Trip-Hop, and more find their rightful home. From the very first 12” release, Fort Knox Recordings was all about remix culture and over the past 20 years some of the worlds top producers and DJs have taken their turn remixing the already funky Fort Knox Five. Another Decade of Funk Remixed compiles 16 of the biggest remixes from the last 10 years and continues the collection started on 10 Years of Fort Knox Five Remixed (2013).

The second decade kicks off with a selection of remixes from FK5’s sophomore studio album, Pressurize The Cabin, including The Funk Hunters hands-in-the-air remix of “Whatcha Gonna Do”, SkiiTour’s house anthem flip of “Fire in my Belly”, Farid’s Latin Disco remix of “Cinco to the Brinco” and the deep desert vibes of Sabo’s “Mission to the Sitars”.

Following on the heels of Pressurize were a series of singles that saw the group exploring new sounds and the killer remixes kept coming. K+lab amps up the 70’s funk of “Don’t Go” into a retro bass fueled floor burner. Stickybuds rides the line between electro, glitch-hop and classic funk on his remix of “Give it a Minute”. Megan Hamilton pushes the mid-tempo wobble of “Keep the Funk Real” into a funky, chunky, house bouncer and TWOGOOD flips the mid-tempo laid back hip hop of “Start the Ride” into a high energy, 303-laced funky banger.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the group enlisted some of their top tier producer friends create modern remixes of FK5 classics. The Allergies transform the hip-hop anthem “Insight” into a hard funk track with retro-heavy guitars and crunchy beats. Krafty Kuts injects the Bossa Nova swagger of “The Brazilian Hipster” with some seriously fat beats and bass creating a certified bomb. The Sponges weave in some modern beats, dirty synths and party chants into their House remix of “The Party Pushers” and Pineo & Loeb hit a home run with their vocal heavy funky house remix of “Keep it Poppin’.”

This compilation also features three previously unreleased new remixes. “Dodge City Rockers” gets a funky breaks update from Basement Freaks, full of horns and old school flavors. The Gaff turns “Funk 4 Peace” into an 808 bass fueled hip hop track and Lou E. Bagels gives us a modern beefed up House remix of the original dancehall meets breaks track “Killa Sound Boy.”

This past summer, Fort Knox Five released “Playin' with Fire”, a fresh slice of retro-soul-tinged modern funk featuring the sweet soul meets rock n roll vocals of Emily Molloy.  The original  is a strutting, head bobbing groover and caught the attention of both WBBL and X-Ray Ted who were eager to remix the track.  FK5 have been longtime fans of both producers, but these remixes are the first outings for these artists on Fort Knox Recordings.

Having been an admirer of his hi-fi glitch hop production for years, it was a dream to get WBBL to work his magic on a Fort Knox Five track.  As you would expect, WBBL added some overstuffed bass, zippy electro-synths and crisp drums with Emily Molloy's soul strutting vocals to create some space-age funk! In true WBBL fashion he has upped the ante and transformed the sultriness of the original into a funky 105bpm  glitchy-bass monster, both beautiful to listen to and bombastic enough to get your booty shaking!.

X-Ray Ted has been pumping out the funky beats on our good friends' Bombstrikes label, and his tracks have been an integral part of the FK5 DJ sets over the past few years. On his remix, X-Ray Ted ups the tempo and gives the track a healthy dose of what It  needs for the dance floor: breakbeats!  We are talking about the  classic party breaks style, as in breakdancers, b-boys and b-girls.  Crisp funky drummer beats along with  flutes,  percussion and a funky vintage bass line come together for a classic b-boy anthem vibe.  

We are so pleased to have finally gotten our U.K. brothers WBBL and X-Ray Ted to remix Fort Knox Five! Playin with Fire has become one of our favorite original tracks of the past couple years, and these two remixes take the funky soul of the original track and flips them into some dance floor gems. Instrumental versions are also included on this new release.

Shambhala in 2022 was extra special because it was the first time the fam was able to reassemble on the Farm for our annual ritual.  After so much time apart, the vibes were extra thick this year as we got to hug, boogie & dance with each other once again.  Steve & Jason brought their Four Deck Set to the Fractal Forest with all new remixes, live edits, mash-ups and bangers.  Here is that set, so we can all keep the funk alive through the winter months until we can reunite once again in the Fractal next year, let's go!!!

Hot on the heels of The Allergies remix of 'Insight' is UK breaks 'n' Bass maestro Krafty Kuts, taking on the ultimate Fort Knox Five anthem 'The Brazilian Hipster.' Krafty does the impossible and injects the retro swagger of the original with some seriously fat beats and bass turning it into a dance floor monster!

For the 150th release on Fort Knox Recordings, and the third in the new series of anniversary remixes, Fort Knox Five have tapped The Sponges to bring their magic touch to remix the electro-disco breaks anthem “The Party Pushers.”

The duo are on the forefront of a new generation of funky house producers and have built their sound by sampling classic tracks and seamlessly blending in funk, tech house and heavy bass elements. They bring all their tricks to the remix of “The Party Pushers”, incorporating the P-Funk influenced vocals of Mustafa Akbar, weaving in booming bass, dirty synths, bleeps and stabs, all propelled by those chunked out bouncy beats.

Starting with Rob Myers' relentlessly distorted funk guitar loop and slowly building using the original's party vocal track, they layer more and more of the vocals and tease the build until Mustafa’s vocoded voice tell you to “turn it up.” And that is just what the Sponges do, amping up an already funky song into a hands-in-the air jam!

Just in time for the end of the year comes a bonus stocking stuffer from Fort Knox Five. We heard you guys loud and clear so we put together a DJ friendly package of the More Disco Remix of “My Nikes” that has been rocking dance floors & airwaves since the summer festivals.

On the original mix, Kenny Beeper and FK5 crafted a radio-friendly, sing-along anthem which had the sneaker heads jumpin! Looking to up the energy of the original hip hop mix Fort Knox Five reworked “My Nikes” with a four to the floor house beat, delivering a mid-tempo Disco remix that pushes the beats and bass into a legit stomping ‘hands in the air’ tune designed to move the dance floor. This one was tested out all festival season and it’s a surefire hit, with crowds who have never heard the track singing along with it by the end.

The More Disco Remix has been featured on numerous DJ charts, club mixes and radio shows and seems to be picking up some steam. There is no doubt that infectious disco groove has some serious swagger! Available for the first time will be a full instrumental version, and a brand new radio edit to drop in your sets!

Fort Knox Five’s longtime friends and brothers in funk, Vancouver-based The Funk Hunters have delivered one of the baddest floor-rocking remixes ever!  This track debuted in the Fractal Forest at the 2015 Shambhala Music Festival where it electrified the masses and brought the crowd to a fever pitch. The Funk Hunters have injected their signature sound into “Whatcha Gonna Do” with big drops, huge hooks, and enough glitch and disco to make you put your hands up!  This is a guaranteed banger full of West Coast synths and chunked out beats. Easy to see why this one is already a staple of The Funk Hunters amazing live sets.

The next “Whatcha Gonna Do” Remix is by Father Funk, the Leeds, UK based producer known for his clever remixes and smashing edits.  Father Funk’s remix begins with Rob Myers’ retro wah-wah guitar and Mustafa Akbar’s soulful party chants then quickly escalates into a wobbly, bass heavy, butt-shaking glitch-hop monster! Building on the momentum of last year's hit single “Don't Go” Fort Knox Five return to the studio to collaborate with bcap, a fresh rhymeslayer from Boston, on the new tune “Give It A Minute.” The sound of this new single reflects FK5's musical sensibilities and exposure to new sounds from touring worldwide.  The result is a catchy, Future Funk, bass-heavy, Go-Go meets Glitch-Hop track that is sure to shake booties around the globe.

After Fort Knox Five remixed “Smoke Machine” by Ursula 1000 featuring bcap on vocals, they were eager to get him in the studio for an original production.  Brian Capobianchi, aka bcap, first vibed with the Fort Knox family while WXGR was lauching ESL Radio a few years ago, in support of Thievery Corporation and their label.  Recorded around the New Year, bcap's party-rocking and thought-provoking lyrics were dropped on top of some raw beats and his bluesy, NOLA-style vocals – in the vein of Dr. John – inspired Fort Knox Five's production.

The Washington, DC infuence can be heard throughout the track, with giant Roto-toms, a steady pulsing beat and a relentless Go-Go percussion workout. As usual, guitars rule the day for Fort Knox Five.  Where other producers might use synthesizers, the group puts the guitar in the spotlight, treating it as a synth throughout.  Rob Myers' funky, rubber band licks provide the melody and the hooks, while the chunky beats and sub-bass propel the song.  With nods to old-school retro-funk and the native Go-Go scene, “Give It A Minute” sets a new standard for the future sound of DC.

The DC Funk Parade picked Future Funk as the 2017 theme and “Give It A Minute” could be the anthem for the event. As bcap says in the track “Still the people keep playin’ my song.” Get ready to hear this infectious, funky-groover at festivals and boomin' out of Jeeps all summer long! The story of Fort Knox Five and Stickybuds goes back over a decade, funk is the glue that binds these brothers together, and they have rocked the same great festivals and shows across the US and Canada.  All of that funky party rockin' has culminated with Stickybuds' first official remix of Fort Knox Five, his reinterpretation of Give It A Minute featuring bcap. No doubt you have heard Stickybuds teasing the crowd with some exclusive Fort Knox Five acapellas and drops over the years in his legendary sets, but this opens a whole new chapter with his bombastic remix.

Stickybuds cuts right to the chase, as his mix opens up immediately to bcap's narrative verse and the relentless percussive synths that propel it over the hard hitting beats.  Synth pop sensibilities of groups like Oliver and Chromeo can be heard dripping over Stickybuds unique glitch-hop style production.  With epic big builds and organic drum fills, the remix rides the line between electro and classic funk.  

From the start the remix gets you hooked on the dancefloor, delivering bcap's catchy chorus over booty shaking beats. And then the big break down devastates with its cut-up and asymmetrical glitched-out vocals layered on top of the electro-synths. Does your life need more cowbell and funky bass?  

Over the past decade there has been a strong connection between Washington DC and British Columbia, Canada. Both places have produced and nurtured some incredibly talented funkateers, many of whom have remixed Fort Knox Five over the years. It has been a dream of ours to collaborate with these artists on original tracks, pushing forward the future sound of funk to start a new era that we have dubbed "DC to BC." This release is the first of these collaborations, and the end result is nothing short of a boogie monster!  

Jinglin’ Janglin’ was written with the funk and glitch hop maestro K+lab, a New Zealander who now calls Vancouver, BC home. His funky keys, electro-basses and catchy clavinets ooze all over this track. With the addition of Rob Myers' Chic-inspired guitars and a super-stabby horn line, this track positively bounces along – a perfect hybrid of the K+Lab and FK5 styles! On top of all that, the tune features vocals from Hip-Hop royalty: Baby Bam of the Jungle Brothers, who has worked alongside De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest going back to the 1980s. His vocals bubble all over the track, telling you to just "funk wit it" and jinglin and janglin the vibes straight to your feet! This tune is a modern funk-meets-glitch hop banger that has been torching dance floors and festivals all summer.  

We are super stoked to launch the DC to BC series with this wicked Captain K+lab collaboration. Already proven to do heavy duty on the dance floor, this release includes an instrumental mix for the DJs. Keep the funk janglin’ with this booty-shaker and stay tuned for the next installment of the DC to BC collabs.

It is a great pleasure to present the Fort Knox Five DJ set from the Cantina Stage at Bass Coast 2019. This was one of my favorite sets from last summer and is such a quintessential FK5 mix, incorporating elements of Funk, Glitch Hop, Disco, Breaks, House and Hip-Hop. Fort Knox Five have been a part of the Bass Coast family from the very beginning, and this is the first time we have ever released a set. This is a long time in the making and I could not be more stoked. This set really represents the music that I like to make, listen to and especially dance to. For all of you that were tearing up the dance floor at the Cantina I hope this mix gives you some good flashbacks, and to those who weren't there, this mix is sure to get your booty shaking. Thank you especially Andrea, Liz and Anna for ending up at my set at the same time and giving me all the love!

It has been 10 years since Fort Knox Five released their first singles, and this past decade has proven very fruitful for the funky foursome. 2003 saw the launch of both Fort Knox Five and their seminal Fort Knox Recordings imprint. To celebrate this milestone, Fort Knox Five have selected 15 of their favorite original tracks from the entire decade.

Fort Knox Five has had the pleasure of collaborating with some incredible vocalists who are well represented on this collection. Mustafa Akbar of Thunderball and Nappy Riddem is featured on several tracks, as are Rootz and Zeebo of See-I and Thievery Corporation. The Godfather of Electro Funk himself, Afrika Bambaataa is featured on two tracks. Asheru, best known for his Boondocks theme song is on the opening track. Thievery Corporation’s dancehall voice, Sleepy Wonder as well as DC’s own DIY legend Ian Svenonius are both featured. The list continues with former US3 front-man and prolific artist Akil Dasan and the Zulu Nation’s King Kamonzi. Rounding out the list of featured vocalists is Beta-G, on loan from the US Department of Bhangra.

This body of music not only spans 10 years of Fort Knox Five in the studio, but also live performances and dj appearances worldwide. This music has been performed and played for countless thousands of fans around the globe. These tunes have also been heard in such great movies as The Cove (2010 Academy Award Winner), Stand Up Guys and You Again as well as TV shows like The Fringe. No stranger to the wide world of video games, Fort Knox Five songs have appeared on Need For Speed: Shift, Skate It, NBA Live 10, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Dirt 3, Sims and others.

10 Years of Fort Knox Five shows the music diversity of the group with one foot firmly planted in funk. Reggae and dub can be heard clearly alongside hip-hop. The group is not afraid to break boundaries and delve into rock, swing and even bhangra in their musical explorations. This collection of music represents the last decade of Fort Knox Five’s musical growth and development.
