Indiepop institution Fortuna POP! quit the scene last year amid much gnashing of teeth from discerning music fans, going out in a blaze of glory with five days of sold out London shows by artists spanning their twenty year tenure, before label owner Sean Price fled Brexit Britain for a new life in Tokyo, Japan. 

That would have been it for Fortuna POP!, were it not for the label’s Jukebox 45s Singles Club. With one final single still owed to subscribers, Price saw the opportunity to do something special for what would be the very last release on the label. Taking one of the label’s best-loved releases, Comet Gain’s classic 2001 single “You Can Hide Your Love Forever”, as his starting point, contributions were solicited from Fortuna POP! bands past and present for a Band Aid-style cover version.

Over twenty bands contributed, with the music recorded by a crack band featuring Amos Memon of Fanfarlo (drums), Emma Kupa of Mammoth Penguins (bass), Laura Kovic of Tigercats (keys) and Paul Rains of Allo Darlin’, Ben Phillipson of Comet Gain and Sam Ayres of Flowers (all guitar) at Soup Studios in London. Mikey Collins of Allo Darlin’ then recorded percussion at Big Jelly studios in Ramsgate, and The Victorian Horns aka Gary Olson (trumpet) and Kyle Forrester (sax) of The Ladybug Transistor put down their brass parts at Gary’s Marlborough Farms Studio in New York.

Vocals were recorded in various studios and kitchens around the world, with Amelia Fletcher of Tender Trap, Daniel Ellis of Martha, Lan McArdle and Owen Williams of Joanna Gruesome, Adam Todd of The Spook School, Bill Botting and Elizabeth Morris of Allo Darlin’, Jeff Greene and Dan Greene of The Butterflies Of Love, Lisa Horton and Iain Ross of Bearsuit, Katherine Whitaker of Evans The Death, Silvi Wersing from Chorusgirl, Helen King of Shrag, Rachel Kenedy of Flowers, Pete Dale of Milky Wimpshake, Darren Hayman, Pete Astor and Simon Love all contributing. Giles Barrett at Soup Studios then made sense of it all and mixed the track.

The result is a fantastic, uplifting indiepop anthem that’s sure to be lifting the lids off indie clubs around the world this summer and for many years to come. Oh, and there’s a B-side too, in which DC Feck of Thee Comet Gain International Psychedelic Pop Conspiracy may have had more than a hand. Enjoy.

The second single from critically acclaimed album ‘Rest And Be Thankful’ is an old school double A - ‘Broken Glass’ and brand new track ‘Bones’ featuring the lo-fi traditional skronk of young upstarts JR Green.

"Bones" was written one wintery morning from the window of Inver Cottage, an old fisherman’s croft on the shores of Loch Fyne, and two weeks ago Linden - Joe, Marco, Eric and Stuart - went to The Barne Studio with the wonderful JR Green, rehearsed, recorded and mixed the track on the same day… old skool! The day was beautifully captured by film-maker and Young Bafta winner Iain Henderson.

Linden play Celtic Connections 27th January at Oran Mor Glasgow and The Trades Club Hebden Bridge 31st January.

There will also be a live BBC Janice Forsyth Culture Show Session with Linden and Jr Green on 20th January.

Manchester based collective Hello Cosmos have shared a remix of their first single ‘Raise The Dawn’. Put together and led by songwriter and bass player Ben Robinson, founder and creative director of Kendal Calling & Bluedot Festival, Hello Cosmos is a long running recording project with a huge cast of collaborators and an accompanying collection of remixes from electronic artists that Ben has worked with over his career.

Beamed direct from an alternative universe in which The Fall were produced by DFA Records’ Tim Goldsworthy, Hello Cosmos hurtle towards Earth with a Radio Clash collision of post-punk, indie-disco and alternative rock that has already them earned them support across BBC 6 Music, Radio X and Louder Than War Magazine.

This colourful blast of influences can be heard on debut single ‘Raise The Dawn’, a brazen rat-a-tat style James Murphy rallying cry against mediocrity “Well I’m just a little bit tired of being spoon fed by the uninspired.” complete with the fractious accompaniment of frantic piano and infectious dance-rock groove. Hello Cosmos may be riled up on this disenchanted anthem but as the new burbling synthesized and radiant electronic remix of the single from Joe Thompson proves, they can also ride the indie-dance wave with a passion, recalling The Juan Maclean, Hercules And Love Affair and of course, LCD Soundsystem.  

This first remix is the first taste of a full collection of Hello Cosmos remixes, representing the constant battle in Robinson’s head between his indie-rock and dance oriented influences and the desire to bring the two together as often as he can, as seen in his two festivals (Kendal Calling & Bluedot respectively). This first remix has been handed to Joe Thompson,  a veteran producer with a 20 year history writing, releasing and remixing records in wide variety of genres. From ghost producing in the late 90s and early 00's for international DJs, and having records regularly playlisted by such EDM trailblazers as Carl Cox, Paul Oakenfold, Paul van Dyk and Ferry Corsten.

Though the recording process for Hello Cosmos has seen a huge cast of characters involved, the live band will consist of Ben himself fronting the band on bass, his brother and lifelong collaborator Simon on drums with the line up completed by Manchester & Leeds based musicians Angela Chan (Lanterns On The Lake, Placebo) on violin & keys and Adrian Ingham on guitar.

With Hello Cosmos. Ben is finally stepping out of the shadows after years as a hugely important figure in UK music. For over 10 years Ben has been at the forefront of festivals in the UK founding two award winning festivals, Bluedot Festival at the Jodrell Bank Space Observatory and Kendal Calling in the Lake District.

 “Sometimes the most subversive thing I can do musically is adhere to standard song structure, sometimes the creepiest chords are the ones we’ve heard before, twisted into different shapes, and sometimes a story is lived a thousand times before we can ride it like a roller coaster. Nothing wholly unfamiliar is gonna make you look twice. When you can describe a record as being “deceptively” anything, you’re hinting at the sociopathic nature of music. Something I love. Imagine truly buying your own sunshine and charm, but also your darkness and violence; the two sides of your psychology showing each other off in relief. Songs can do that...we can’t, really. Darkness we’ve seen. Dark sunshine? Still cool.

I usually play all the instruments on my solo records - essentially the sound of having no friends - but sociopaths can’t realize their potential without people to work out their grievances on and this record is a freakin’ sociopath. So I invited my friends to the party I wanted to hear. Not a live record but an alive record. 

Because a lot of live records don’t sound live, just poorly recorded. And self-conscious musicians can’t let fly. I wanted to recreate the impact of a show. Unpretentious, with a muscular song body running through the room. This entailed seriously messing with both extremes of the sonic spectrum: the fundamentals (basics, rhythm section, roots) but also with the detail (percussion, high end, effects). These two strata asked to sound eccentric: atonal and arhythmic. So when the song body runs through the room, it’s not wholly unfamiliar, just dressed oddly enough to make you look twice. Dark sunshine, still cool. Hopefully, anyway.

My friends helped me make a nice party noise, a goofy sociopath. Everyone who stopped by the studio was asked to make some noise and they pretty much did. A party that lasted for a few years, it’s only now dying down. A friend called this morning asking when the bus was leaving. A rickety, squealy, squeaky bus...none of us want to miss it.”

Throwing Muses’ lynchpin, Kristin Hersh’s prolific career has seen her heralded queen of the alternative release.
