an indirect sequel of sorts to ''a sunday afternoon in cheetham hill'', full pelt to the roll through crew at 7am in the hackney arches. calling this  ''muscle house'' as sits a bit further in abrasiveness from tech house but also far slower than hard house. there was a stupidly good rig here that informed my playing and I felt i could go as far as wanted but tried to keep the bouncier vibes for the sake of fun. this (morning) really set my bank holiday down south in motion and definitely gave me the minerals needed to brave that 8+ hour unfold queue...  

lots of love to josh for bringing me down and making it all happen being part of this was a real breath of fresh air, and extra special love to darnell and edith for making me feel really comfortable and welcome as it was my first time visiting let alone playing in london.

a sunday morning at hackney arches

toploader (@toploading) is rooted in the now-defunct family of Fluid Festival (R.I.P.), having made early appearances alongside his bestie dj fako at Hamburg’s club institution [PAL] in 2022, followed by gigs at Jupiter, Callshop & Sicnal Radio, Akashic Records, and Paloma. These days, he’s shifting into more introspective territory, curating ambient and listening sessions with events with Transmute in a questionable attempt to rebrand himself as “thoughtful.”

Musically, he has (allegedly) matured — drifting away from uninspired 4/4 techno and house toward deeper, more hypnotic, and non-linear soundscapes. Think dubby textures, tribal rhythms, and percussive, reverberated deep techno — because nothing screams originality like dramatic, cinematic pads and echoes.

He most definitely does not break boundaries or bend genres. Instead, he plays what he likes (and what he almost certainly shazamed off someone else’s digging efforts). Toploader values about flow, cohesion, and subtlety. Neither especially known for his stellar mixing nor his careful selections, he’s presenting to you today: all things dub.

Five days, five mixes. RA.999 launches with two of the 2020's most exciting techno producers tearing a portal to the future.

When it comes to purveyors of contemporary hardgroove, it's hard to top 1morning and Regal86. The duo have emerged from a buzzy, and decidedly funk-oriented techno scene on the American West Coast, repping Los Angeles and Monterrey respectively. Bound by a shared love of old-school flair and intuition behind the decks, you'll often find Regal86 ditching headphones altogether in favour of studying waveforms in real time, while 1morning's vinyl-only sets are steered by the movements of the dance floor and the fire in his heart.

So it comes as no surprise that we had to invite them back in session. In the last week before we celebrate the 1000th RA Podcast, we'll drop five back-to-backs over the course of the week. From the NYC Downlow to Berlin's Bar25, what unifies this cohort is a sense that they capture where dance music has been—and crucially, where it's going.

Kicking off the week, we have this exclusive recording from the duo's co-headline show at New York's Bossa Nova Civic Club—the "extra special" final stop of their recent US tour. As the first instalment of RA.999, this one-hour set makes a strong case for what it means to achieve ultimate freedom in the booth.

Regal86 and 1morning might be known for their raw, swung techno explorations, but here, their more sensual leanings carry the most impact. You'll find hardgroove's very own daddy Ben Sims, Paul Mac's 2002 melodic beauty Struggling Event and the lavish stomp of Percy X's As Is. And, of course, it wouldn't be a Regal86 and 1morning linkup without a healthy dose of Mexico City rising star—and the former's frequent sparring partner—1OO1O.

But really, this mix proves just how perceptive the two are. It opens a portal into the beating heart of groove-first techno, masterfully flowing between impulse and restraint, tradition and modernity. And who are we to resist?

Four years deep into his residency at Chicago's SubT club, KEEFE has been perfecting his approach to club music from the ground up. On The Joint EP, KEEFE’s Fortune Signal debut, the aim is simple and honest: fast, high-impact house tracks that earn their space on USBs and move rooms without fuss. It’s a perfect match for where the label’s compass is pointing us these days: music that prioritizes function over flash, made by producers who understand that the best club music serves the floor first, everything else second.

The title track sets the standard with an unrelenting 4×4 kick and cheeky donk-ish bassline, anchored to percussive foundations and augmented by ripping synth squelches. The EP’s engine is percussion and pumping low end, and he folds in robotic chirps, chord stabs, and wide, soaring pads to dial up tension. The result is stripped-down, efficient club tools sharpened for maximum impact in the club. Having cut his teeth with releases on such labels as UTTU, Hot Haus Recordings, and Chapeau Music, KEEFE channels and focuses his bouncy, raw energy into The Joint EP's four no-nonsense bangers.

KEEFE's approach reflects the best of club culture. It’s music made by someone who understands dance floors because he's spent years moving them. The Joint EP distills that experience into four pieces that do real work and still manage to grin.
