Did you ever wonder what that little burst of bright sound was at the beginning of an audio cassette?

It's called the XDR Toneburst - and it was used by cassette duplication machinery to self-test the magnetic tape for any defects. It's a quick run from the low frequency of 50 hz - right up to 18300 hz (which most of us can't hear anyway!)

Each tone runs for 0.127 seconds with a gap of 0.023 seconds between, creating intervals of 0.15 seconds. The whole thing lasts only for 2.2 seconds.
