Every hero has an origin story that shapes their destiny. February 3rd, 2009 is where Marcus Houston’s story begins. The Austin, TX emcee was inspired to pick up a microphone upon hearing that a good friend had passed away. Humans grieve through different outlets. For Marcus J., his method of coping with this tragedy was inspired by hearing beats on an XBox 360 and writing to one that grabbed his attention. Having no prior experience with creating music, Marcus recorded two pages of lyrics over the beat and played the record for his older brother who stormed out of the room. This wasn’t due to anger; Marcus’ brother was overcome with emotion from the lyrics of the song. February 3rd, 2009 is the day that Marcus J. was born. 

 

Drawing inspiration from Z-Ro, Andre 3000, Marvin Gaye, and Kendrick Lamar, Marcus J showcases thought provoking lyrics through a laid back style on the mic. His hunger for success continues to grow and is fueling the recording of his new project, slated to be released this summer. The music industry is pandering to the simplicity of song content now but every style cycles back around. When it’s time for lyricists to reign supreme again, Marcus J. plans on being at the forefront of that movement.
