Norway’s finest purveyors of off-kilter, crystalline pop, Soft as Snow aka Oda Egjar Starheim and Øystein Monsen, are back with a brand new release. The 4-track ‘Chrysalis’ EP is the duo’s second original release, following their 2014 debut - the ‘Glass Body’ EP, which was also issued as 'Glass Body Remixed', a striking collection of reworked versions by Lucy, Gabe Gurnsey of Factory Floor, Maria Minerva and Brian DeGraw of Gang Gang Dance.

Opening track ‘I Adore’ is characterized by abrasive synths and shimmering inflections, while ‘Fluid’ builds from glassy restraint to a synth freak-out. ‘Mouth’ is a menacing statement of intent, all tribal percussion and primal yelps, calling to mind the unsettling production of Mica Levi’s soundtrack for ‘Under The Skin’. The EP draws to a close with the energetic, skittering ‘Her Blood Is Gold’, with Oda’s strange, otherworldly vocal binding it all together.

The release was mixed in LA by Timothy Wiles, whose engineering credits as Q include Factory Floor and Liars, whilst his production career as Überzone stretches back to the USA’s mid-90s rave boom. The 12” is pressed to hot pink vinyl and housed in a high-gloss sleeve with artwork by Kytten Janae, in a limited run of 500 copies.

Bjarki just dropped the first part of a 41 track archive released over three LPs... whatever you do, don't call it an album. The three LP's will instead represent a snapshot of his genre-defying archive.  The three LPs aren’t albums in the traditional sense - the concept was simply to release the contents of his burgeoning hard drives. 

The first part of the three part archive is cyrillic for "B" and although all the tracks are solid, there is one that stood out to us in particular. "The Lover That You Are" kicks off with some ethereal pads and filtered down percussion that slowly begins to reveal itself in full as the resonance gets turned up to eleven to suddenly drop you into a break-heavy moody Techno banger. One of the best qualities of this track is how skilfully it plays with tension and release and honestly we can't get enough of it. Lee Foss has long been recognized as an artist of many talents. A steadfast visionary with his hands in all aspects of creative production, Lee's power has always stemmed from his connection not only to the energy of the human experience but also from the way that it is expressed through the conception and performance of electronic music. After many years of involvement in the musical community through his labels Emerald City and Hot Creations, his collaborative projects Hot Natured and Pleasure State, and his extensive DJ career, Lee is finally releasing his first full length solo album Alchemy, out now.

Alchemy comes at a time of inspiration and focus for Lee, after taking a hiatus from solo production for a couple of years. With work beginning in October 2015, Alchemy has been a long time coming for Lee, and is a cohesive body of work brimming with intent. Leaning heavily on analog synths and vintage drum machines with some occasional guitar and live bass, the album features guest appearances from frequent collaborators Anabel Englund and Infinity Ink, along with others.

About the album, Lee says, "I titled the album Alchemy because I've long been fascinated by the scientific and spiritual dichotomy it represented, sort of as the crossroads of modern science and ancient spirituality and its ethos of distilling perfection in the physical and spiritual realm. It's dismissed as pseudoscience now but most of modern chemistry and the scientific method stems from it, and I'm interested in a world that better combines the spiritual realm with the scientific and western medicine we worship today. I feel like making music is the modern alchemy as we search for that perfect series of tones to reach our magnum opus."

In recent history, Lee has gained recognition through the heralded Hot Natured album Different Sides of the Sun, their scintillating live performance at Coachella, and his eminent collaboration with MK and Anabel Englund "Electricity."

In search of the perfect piece of veal to create yet another variation of the schnitzel, we've sent out a team to New York and followed up on a lead regarding taking us all the way to the vibe alleys of Kingston, Jamaica. The results are just as confusing as they are satisfying, since it turns out that heat, tranquillity as well as endless traffic jams are all factors accountable for a nice and tender slice of deliciousness. The island’s variation of uptempo deep tissue massages, as opposed to the confusingly more laidback style of the New York method both make for a great preparation, and are now served on both sides of this schnitzel before you. As always vinyl only and limited to a number that will most likely serve most of you, but probably not all of you.
