It’s been already 10 years since the first DJ’s Choice parties in basements and squatted social centers in Rome. Many things have changed, but the approach remains the same: using music as a form of expression and a means to affirm one’s identity. RM stands for “Rebel Music” (i.e., music by DJ’s Choice founder The Rebel), but is also short for “Rome”, a city represented in track one by the ‘Jedi Master’ of Roman hip hop: Danno, from the pioneering underground crew Colle Der Fomento. Also performing on The Rebel’s instrumental are New York hip hop duo The Good People in track two, ''Body Rockin''', remixed by another Italian hip hop legend, Ice One. Rome and New York are two worlds, two styles, but two sides of the same coin. Our Rebel Music brings them together as if they were two stops on the same subway line.

Italian songstress, Scerida, is releasing her album "Voglia De Perdere" on October 27th. 

I previously reviewed her fantastic "Infinito" and I have been lucky enough that Edizioni Della Notte let me listen to the whole "Voglia De Perdere". 

The heart of 'Voglia Di Perdere' lay in its music, a collection of eight tracks that held within them the essence of post-wave vibes.

 As I journeyed through the album, you could feel the nocturnal rhythms, pulsating like the heartbeat of a city coming alive after dark. Lo-fi atmospheres wrapped around you like a cozy, well-worn sweater, comforting and intimate.

"Je Ne Sais Pas" is actually an old skool undertaking in a very classical sense of songwriting. 

The sense and vibe is fluffy as clouds with a strangely irresistible lo-fi vibe interweaving through every nucleus. 

Scerida's Italian vocals engulfs the melody, with a story of insecurity and yet manifests in such a confirming manner. 

"Je Ne Sais Pas" for me stands as a delectable oddity that keeps growing for me.

Alessandro Alessandroni’s ‘Afro Discoteca’ is released on a blasting 12’’ containing 4 cosmic/disco tracks drawing influences from African music - never published before these incredibly powerful and evocative recordings were rescued from an old dusty tape found in the Maestro’s vaults.

The EP became an instant classic for diggers and worldwide tastemakers, bringing the name of Alessandroni to new audiences, far beyond the circle of film scores and library music aficionados .

March 2019: Four Flies asks to a rock band (CALIBRO 35) and three amongst the most brilliant and visionary Italian DJs and producers (Jolly Mare, L.U.C.A., pAd) to rework the original tracks, giving them new life for refined modern dancefloors.

The result is a stunning collection of electronic/cosmic/balearic reworks, which respects the spirit of Alessandroni’s compositions, projecting them into our present.

About Alessandro Alessandroni

Alessandro Alessandroni (Rome, Italy 03/18/1925 – Swakopmund, Namibia 03/26/2017) was one of the most important Italian musicians of the 20th century. A composer, arranger, singer and multi-instrumentalist whose impact on pop culture is immeasurable, from his unique guitar work and — perhaps most famously — his whistle for Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western soundtracks to the unforgettable vocal hook of Piero Umiliani's "Mah Nà Mah Nà”.

In a career that spans seven decades, Alessandroni scored almost a hundred movies and recorded countless production music albums, currently acclaimed by the most important musical experts around the world.

Excited to share this brilliant missive from the dancefloor leftfield. Producer, turntablist, mechanical engineer and full time rhythmatist, Jolly Mare, puts a cosmic spin on "Afro Sortilegio", originally written and recorded by composer, keyboardist, percussionist and Italian library music legend, Giuliano Sorgini. Forthcoming from musical time travellers, Four Flies Records.

Back in 2018, Four Flies Records unearthed the previously unheard ‘Africa Oscura’, considered by many as the “dark side” of ‘Zoo Folle’ – Giuliano Sorgini’s masterpiece (reissued by Four Flies Records in 2016 and since then a favourite for this writer) – and partly recorded during the same session in 1974.

The original work portrays a fictional and mysterious continent, providing a soundtrack tinged with dark moods and cosmic shades. ‘Africa Oscura’ was entirely recorded by the composer, who played all instruments in his studio in Rome. This resulted in a formal spareness, a minimalism that gives it a modern quality, something which makes it stand the test of time, or at least resonate with contemporary taste.

Since its release, ‘Africa Oscura’ has become a classic – a pivotal release not only within Sorgini’s discography, but also one that made his name more known and accessible to a new generation of music professionals, DJs and fans of electronic music.

Now Four Flies present a double 12” featuring 7 reworks by six of Italy’s most visionary DJs/producers: Jolly Mare, L.U.C.A. (aka Francisco), pAd, Painé, and Quiroga & Dario Bass. The original tracks have been reworked with different approaches, sometimes into full reinterpretations, and with demanding dance floors in mind. The result is a stunning collection of electronic, cosmic, downtempo and Balearic reworks that preserve the spirit of the original versions while projecting them into the future.

Of his rework, Jolly Mare tells us: "The original track is dense with rhythm and pathos, but I found that to be a little too unrelenting. So, in agreement with Giuliano Sorgini, I decided to re-record it at a slower tempo. The piece immediately acquired an even more obscure and ancestral aura, combining organic and electronic vibes in a perfect Afro-cosmic style. We then layered additional conga rhythms and guitar and synthesizer phrases on top of it. Everything took shape surprisingly quickly."

Released February 19 on all digital formats plus vinyl over two volumes.
