This week we welcome Dublin-based DJ and producer Jay Cullen to the Four Four Local Selection. Dial in for the next hour as Jay seamlessly skips through a range of old-school classics and bumping house. Heaters galore fused with an array of exceptional sounding organ house.

Jay has tirelessly dedicated himself to carving out a niche as an emerging force in the world of house music over the last few years. This has led him to share the stage with some of the genre’s most illustrious acts such as Eats Everything, Sam Divine, Route 94, Danny Howard, Sosa and so on.

Playing at international venues such as Mansion Mallorca and Plastik Ibiza, to a host of venues in Liverpool and every corner of Ireland which includes Belfast, Galway and Kerry, Jay has made a significant stamp in the music industry in his chosen scene. Despite being relatively new to the realm of production, 2025 looks promising for him to continue building on his current wave of momentum, we are excited to see and hear what the future holds for this young artist.

While house tends to be Jay’s musical cornerstone, his sonic palette extends far beyond the genre. Having developed an eclectic ear attuned to the diverse tastes of his audience, he effortlessly navigates through a span of genres such as hard house, old-school, tech-house and more throughout his Local Selection.

Local Selection 256: Jay Cullen

This week’s Local Selection comes from Brazilian-born Ortega, who delivers an hours live set of stripped-back, powerful house. The mix weaves in and out of syncopated synth lines, swirling acid, and Drexcyian electro euphoria.

Ortega, also known as Boomtz Boom, is a DJ and electronic music producer from Taboão da Serra, Brazil. His journey into dance music began at the age of nine in 1993, eventually leading him to pursue DJing in 2006.

By 2012, Ortega had made his mark on São Paulo’s club scene and became a key member of the Smile Collective, where he immersed himself in the city’s vibrant club culture. In 2016, he shifted focus to production, blending elements of electro, house, techno, and acid with latin, jazz, funk, and disco influences.

Ortega has played at several notable festivals and venues, including Electric Picnic, Tengu, Wigwam, Fidelity, and Skol Beats Factory, sharing the stage with many of his musical idols.

His production highlights include the 2017 album Diggin’ For Beats Batuque with Beat Maker Rasec, and three EPs released between 2021 and 2023, including Tropic Lines, a collaboration with Bunny Kawaii. In 2024, Ortega was invited by Kawaii to run the label Canario Records. Under his Boomtz Boom alias, he has also released a series of singles on his Bandcamp.

Ortega’s live set is steeped in deep, rolling basslines and intricate percussive grooves, as he expertly navigates the journey through hypnotic, atmospheric breakdowns and nuanced, minimalistic power. The hour mix showcases a producer and performer who has earned his stripes, shifting through various moods and crafting a seamless journey where it was hard to tell where one track began and the next ended. The result was a persistent, organic flow that kept the crowd locked in, with each drift feeling natural and free-flowing.

Our latest contribution to the Four Four Local Selection is Irish-born, Berlin-based DJ and promoter Taurean. The DOLLHAUS founder has provided us with a highly energetic recording which captivates her distinct approach to techno.

Taurean’s work with Dollhaus has shown that she is a fierce advocate for supporting FLINTA DJs and producers. She has done so by providing them with a platform to express themselves and provide a space for a vast amount of artists to flourish since the inception of Dollhaus. This

This mix is a fantastic display of Taurean’s vast discography, as she toggles between a range of driving and emotive cuts throughout. Over the hour-long recording, you can expect to hear elements of meddling percussion, fused with brimming basslines that weave everything together. Not forgetting certain nods to some old school influences which Taurean derives significant inspiration from.

We revive our Global Selection series with a standout contribution from one of France's most authoritative selectors of his generation, Ivan Smagghe.

Ahead of his return to Dublin for Big Dish Go this weekend at Centre Point, Smagghe delivers a masterful hour of storytelling through sound. From shimmering downtempo rarities to deep, driving house cuts and smoky, electro-kissed grooves, his mix unfolds like the hazy soundtrack to a foggy morning in the hills of an undisclosed rave, transporting you there, or wherever your wandering mind takes you.

Few DJs can transform obscurity into dancefloor gold like Ivan Smagghe. With a musical ethos reminiscent of the late, great Andrew Weatherall, Smagghe acts as a raw conduit, channelling his notoriously esoteric record collection into the pulsing bodies beneath the strobe. His latest mix is yet another example of his singular talent—a deep dive into the avant-garde fringes of electronic music, held together by an intuitive understanding of groove and space.

Smagghe has long been at the intersection of Parisian hype and unwavering musical integrity. From his pioneering work with Black Strobe to his boundary-pushing productions as one half of It’s A Fine Line, he has received praise from some of the most respected names in electronic music, including James Murphy, Trevor Jackson, Ata, Optimo, and, of course, Weatherall himself. What is their shared mission? To demonstrate that electronic music is more than just a hedonistic soundtrack; it is a constantly evolving art form.
