Our first premiere of the day comes from one of the most illustrious techno duo’s in the world right now, SHDW & Obscure Shape. ‘Set It Off’ comes from the third release on the duo’s imprint, Mutual Rytm, and acts the pairs debut EP on the label. Tribal rhythms meet dub chords and vigorous synth lines, to make for a 90’s inspired techno anthem.

SHDW & Obscure Shape have risen to become leading names within today’s techno landscape, and continue to grow and evolve while shaping their own unique sound intertwining classic influences with a modern
touch.

Their latest project saw the birth of Mutual Rytm – a new imprint launched in early 2022 set to showcase a deep dive into the duo’s musical roots via their own productions alongside material from the label’s close family of likeminded artists.

Following the label’s opening multi-artist VA and the first solo EP from Berlin’s Lars Huismann, June welcomes the first solo instalment from the label founders themselves as they ready a killer five-tracker set to
make an impact.

‘Set It Off’ see’s SHDW & Obscure Shape dive deep into classic techno influences, channelling classic dub sounds, with raw Dutch leads and that the infamous Birmingham groove, yet the duo sound distinctly fresh and idiosyncratic. The tracks journey sweeps through vast climaxes and intramural deepness. The duo have captured the sound of the past and present and have rolled it up into a five minute future classic.

Four Four Premiere: SHDW & Obscure Shape - Set It Off (Original Mix)[Mutual Rytm]

Marcal is back for round two on Dustin Zahn’s Enemy Records with “Cyber Dystopia.” Marcal’s trademark grooves and clever vocal processing make this one of his most exciting and hypnotic records yet. It’s pure class…there isn’t much else to say!

BUT we have to try anyway…
“Cyber Dystopia” starts off with Bionic Jungle, a trippy peak time roller sprinkled with uh, lifeforms or something? We haven’t been able to identify them, which is just proof that Marcal is living on another planet we haven’t been to yet. We’re standing by for the invite.

Moravex’s Paradox picks up where Bionic Jungle left off…chugging along in his signature style. It’s loopy. It’s tooly…but still heavy on the grooves, making it a perfect fit in deep and peak time sets alike.

Nothing About the United States hits a little harder and darker. Dissonant drones and catchy sound design take over, flipping the switch from “party” to “punish.” For fans of his recent track on Enemy, “Never Wrote This.”

Don’t Fear the Three is a classic Marcal percussive workout in heads-down mode. It’s as equally powerful as every other track on the record.

“Cyber Dystopia” is all about the world we are living in right now: artificial intelligence, smart houses, smartphones, self-driving cars, deepfakes, fake news, cybernetic warfare, metaverse, social networks, the internet of things, machine learning, virtual reality...
We are definitely entering a new stage of civilization, the post-modern era.
But,
Are we living an 'apocalypse of self-abdication' already? Or we are, as humans, simply evolving as technology evolves? There will ever be a limit to technology? Will it help as much it can also destruct?

A renowned global talent, Iceland's Exos was last on Mutual Rytm earlier this year with his successful 'Infrared' EP in April. The debut release on the label's new 10" vinyl X-Series, the EP picked up a wealth of high-profile plays while delivering an absorbing journey through techno soundscapes. The release was followed up by his 'Evil Nation'

LP, exploring a harder, more intense approach to techno on his own Planet X imprint, ext to tunes on the likes of Figure and X/OZ. However, he returns with more skilfully crafted ammunition across five stand-out productions and two digital bonus gems on SHDW's burgeoning imprint for a second outing packed with his trademark sound spanning mystic yet driving and impactful spheres.

The package opens up with 'Voices Of Volcano', a powerful track with a monstrous low end and quickened drum kicks that compel you to march in time as the twisted synths peel away up top. 'Enter The Danger' has a steamy feel, as if racing through a humid jungle with the sounds of bird calls and haunting voices next to the loopy percussion and driving rhythms.

The brilliant 'Icebreaker' keeps up the intensity with more precision drumming working dancers into a meditative state while the cosmic synths grow up out of the groove to become bright and unsettling. 'Mocoa Beats' is another warm techno cut that fizzes with synth energy and unfolds like an ancient ritual, while 'Chicat' brings some sensuality to the party with whispered, intimate vocals over more macho and unrelenting drums. Bonus tracks 'Codebreaker' and 'Spliffmatch' round out this high-grade EP of timeless techno in style, offering a unique closing treat for digital purchasers.
